Nothing warms the heart like waking up, rolling over, and seeing that happy face gazing back at you with love. No, we’re not talking about your spouse; we’re talking about your beloved pooch. Dogs are our best friends because they offer unbridled loyalty, close companionship, and unlimited kisses. In return, the least we can do is show them tons of affection, starting with petting your furry friend first thing in the morning. Not only does this daily habit show your dog that you love them, but it offers a wide range of additional benefits. Here are some reasons you should pet your dog right after waking up.

It Establishes a Routine

It’s important for pet owners to establish a firm daily routine with their companions so that they’re not constantly begging for treats and walks. This begins in the morning with five minutes of head pets and belly rubs. By making this a regular activity, you’re essentially teaching the dog that the day doesn’t begin until you’ve pet them. Where you go from there is up to you, whether it’s feeding time or walking. Either way, this helps add some order and stability to the beginning of each day.

It Lowers Stress

Scientific studies have shown that petting a dog can lower stress levels in as little as five minutes, allowing you to approach the day in a more positive mood. This has to do with a reduction in the stress hormone cortisol. Maintaining low cortisol levels is also essential for regulating blood pressure, so petting your dog each morning can be especially beneficial for those at risk of cardiovascular ailments.

It Improves Your Mood

Not only does petting your dog lower cortisol, but it also increases oxytocin levels, a hormone associated with improved mood. Oxytocin is occasionally referred to as the “love hormone,” as it’s often intertwined with feelings of trust and relationship building. The more you bond with your dog each morning, the higher your oxytocin levels will be, thus allowing you to tackle the day ahead feeling happy and relaxed.

It Strengthens Your Bond

Physical touch is a fantastic way for owners to strengthen their bond with their pets. This includes rubbing the dog’s head, scratching their belly, or just lying next to it on the couch for 10 minutes. All of these actions go a long way toward building companionship and deepening the love that you and your dog feel for one another.

It Makes Your Dog Feel Safe

Petting your dog also does wonders for the animal, providing the creature with a regular sense of security and comfort. If you don’t bond with your dog before leaving the house for work, the pooch may feel lonely and listless the entire day. On the other hand, dedicating a few minutes to petting your dog every morning will likely leave it feeling calmer when you eventually head out of the house.

It’s Flat Out Fun

All of the scientific lingo aside, petting your dog in the morning is just a fun way to start your day. There’s nothing quite like rolling around on the floor and snuggling with your fur baby, and maybe throwing a ball around the living room for them to chase. Chances are you may already be subconsciously petting your dog first thing in the morning, and if that’s the case, great! But if you aren’t, you may notice a huge improvement in your overall mood once you start.
