Quip has always been the Instagrammable friend of the toothbrush world. When it released its first electric toothbrush, it was sleeker and thinner than the brushes that came before it. It was, no doubt, a more fun take on a necessary but generally boring tool. Now, a decade later, it has released an even prettier brush, the Ultra Next Generation Smart Sonic Electric Toothbrush.

Quip Ultra Next Generation Smart Sonic Toothbrush
Instead of plastic, the Ultra is covered in a soft silicone that feels satisfying to the touch. That design aesthetic is also practical. Toothpaste tends to build up and harden on edges and crevices, making brushes grimy and flakey. But here, the body is seamless, save for a strip of metal down each side, so there are no nooks and crannies where toothpaste can collect. Just give it a rinse and place it in its stand.
Quip brushes have long, thin necks. That’s true here as well, but it’s more substantial than the first brush I tried, which felt slightly precarious as I vigorously scrubbed. That thin neck and small brush head easily reach back to clean your molars and tongue.
The Ultra has over 10 intensity levels controlled by swiping up on the LED strip on the front of the brush with satisfying haptics. It goes from gentle to quite intense, so there’s no doubt everyone will find the perfect level for them. Whatever the intensity, the brand says the Ultra removes 15 times more plaque from teeth than a manual brush, with two times more whitening power.
With a 30-day battery life, you can think less about charging. It also makes travel extra easy too. Unless you’ll be away longer than a month, you can leave at least one plug at home.

One great aspect of using an electric toothbrush is that you create less waste over time by only replacing brush heads and not an entire toothbrush. The Ultra takes that a step further, with a unique brush head that uses even less plastic than other brands. Instead of replacing the entire top, just twist and click out the bristles and a small base behind them. According to Quip, the new design creates 70% less waste than its original sonic brush.
The Quip Ultra is a smart brush, which adds to the cost. People tend to love or hate an app-connected brush, but it’s neat if you want to see how thoroughly you’re cleaning — or where you’re missing. I can see it being handy for kids who are learning to brush properly for a full two minutes. By using the app, you earn points that can be redeemed for refills or gift cards, which is a nice insensitive.
I’ve been testing toothbrushes for the last five years, and that includes many of Quip’s lineup, from its basic sonic brush to the oscillating version. The price is steep, but if you can spring for a $100 toothbrush, you’ll get a satisfying clean in a sleek body. Not only is it prettier than the brushes that came before, but it performs better too.
