There’s nothing like claiming a spot on the bare earth by planting down a cooler brimming with ice-cold drinks. Maybe you toss a few frozen grapes in there, sandwiches for nourishment, and some Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups for after lunch. Wherever you are, it’s better with enough cold drinks to go around.

The wrong cooler is just a hassle, though. Nobody wants to lug the thing all the way to the destination and find a swamp of half-melted ice inside. You need to get at least a full afternoon of preserved ice out of it, and not in some laboratory conditions, either. It needs to perform when the sun is beating down on it on a hot day. We’ve rounded up the best coolers for every need, from backpacks to wheeled behemoths to affordable ones you can squish into a closet or throw out when you’re done with them.

Prices are accurate as of May 8, 2026. Subject to change.

For Vintage Vibes: Igloo Legacy 54 Quart Stainless Steel Cooler

Once I’d gained an apartment with a courtyard, I knew that I’d want to begin throwing parties during the summer. And there’s no way I was going to make people run inside every time they wanted a drink. Vintage steel coolers always held a fascination for me, so I was an easy mark for this stainless steel, 54-quart cooler from Igloo.

The built-in bottle opener mounted to the front of the chest was a big draw for me, because bottle openers always go missing during a party. Its attractive pebbled powder coating (available in four colors) was tough enough to withstand the abuse of 50 friends slamming down the lid, banging it with beer glasses, and sitting on it. The last time I put it to use, I forgot to empty it out for over 24 hours, and there were still whole ice cubes floating in the cool water inside.

The Top Performer: RTIC 52-Quart Cooler

Yeti makes a great cooler, but it comes with a great price, too. The RTIC offers a very similarly built cooler with extreme ice-coddling performance. Three inches of closed-cell foam insulates the contents well enough to keep them chilled for up to seven days. This is the cooler you want if you’re going on a long camping trip and want to make sure there’s plenty of fresh eggs for breakfast and hot dogs for dinner every day of the week.

A Soft-Sided Cooler: Polar Bear 24-Pack Nylon Soft Cooler

Hard-sided coolers may have the edge in cold retention, but a soft-sided cooler is lighter and easier for one person to carry; Polar Bear’s has an adjustable shoulder strap. When you’re not using it, you can squash it down and tuck it away, rather than having a hard cooler taking up a bunch of storage space.

Polar Bear says it’ll keep ice solid for up to 24 hours in 100-degree temperatures. While you may be better served on days-long trips by a hard-sided cooler, this soft-sided model is more than up to the task of keeping your drinks and sandwiches ice cold for a trip to the beach or an impromptu picnic at the park.

Best One-Time Use Cooler: Igloo Recool

Don’t need a cooler for more than a one-off event and don’t want to have it hogging space in your closet? Igloo’s Recool is made in the US out of compostable, 100 percent biodegradable materials that can be thrown out after you’re done with it. The Earth won’t cry much over it, and neither will your wallet, with it costing under $10. While it won’t match the performance of a more solidly built cooler, Igloo says it’ll keep ice frozen for up to 12 hours and hold water for up to five days without leaking. The four cup holders molded into the lid are a nice touch, too.

The Coolest Wheeled Cooler: Igloo Trailmate Journey

At 70 quarts, the Trailmate Journey can pack up to 112 cans of your favorite drink without the need to carry that monstrous weight. Wheeled coolers take the strain off the unlucky person tasked with transporting drinks to the beach or over the roots and rocks to the picnic spot in the park, but too many of them have tiny wheels that struggle over terrain that isn’t perfectly flat. The Trailmate Journey’s 10-inch wheels eat up off-road obstacles so that you spend less time struggling with its telescoping handle.

Like an SUV kitted out for self-sufficiency, the Trailmate Journey also has a few ingenious features I’ve never seen on a cooler before. There’s an exterior pocket for carrying sunscreen, paper towels, snacks, or whatever else you don’t want sharing space with the food and drinks inside the insulated space. And a plastic picnic tray, ordinarily stored against the inside of the lid, can be removed and attached to the outstretched handles as a serving tray or eating tray.

Load Up a Backpack Cooler: Coleman Backroads

Not big on the idea of carrying a cooler around at all? I don’t blame you. You may endeavor to find a cooler that doesn’t weigh much. You know, one of those coolers that brags about being made of ultralight this or that, a real lightweight model. And then you load it up with the drinks, and it ends up weighing almost the same.

Carrying weight on your back can be a more comfortable way to transport the goodies. Out of all the backpack coolers I looked at, Coleman’s Backroads does the best job of appearing to be a regular backpack while still having enough space inside its insulated compartment for 30 cans. It even has side pockets for carrying sunscreen and bug spray, because who’d want to pack them in there with the ice and the drinks?

How to Clean Outdoor Furniture

Your outdoor furniture is more prone to degrading because of the elements, regardless of the climate you live in. Cushions left in the sun will fade, and snow or hail can damage wicker chairs. In addition to bringing it inside when necessary, you should also regularly clean outdoor furniture so it stays in tip-top shape. But don’t accidentally wear away at your furniture with the wrong cleaning products. Like the furniture in your house and your interior surfaces, it’s important to pay special attention to the materials and the best cleaning products to use on them.

Many of your regular at-home cleaners will do the job, but a few specialized products will make your life easier and preserve your furniture over time. Outdoor furniture is pricey, so protect that investment by regularly cleaning and you won’t have to replace damaged items.

Metal outdoor furniture
Credit: pixbox77/ iStock

Metal

For general cleaning of your stainless steel or wrought iron metal pieces, start with dish soap and water. After rinsing the furniture, pat it dry.

Rust is not typically a problem with most metal furniture produced these days — they’re usually made to be rust-resistant. However, if you do come across rust, address it quickly. Steel wool is a common household item that can help you remove it. If you’d rather not hold onto steel wool, you can use a wire brush instead. The brush will also help you get to hard-to-reach places. Another trick is to sprinkle baking soda over the rusted area and rub it with white vinegar.

To fix any spots where you’ve worn the paint away, use a touch-up pen or rust-resistant paint. To make your aluminum furniture look like new, try metal polish.

Outdoor pillows and cushions

Outdoor Fabrics

To deal with dirt buildup, use a vacuum directly on cushions and fabric furniture. You can also beat the cushions against a wall to throw dirt off. Use soap and a damp cloth for regular wipe downs.

Fabric furniture is susceptible to mold growth from rain and dew, and with that comes odor. If any of your fabric covers can be machine washed, regularly throw them in for a cleaning cycle. If they need to be hand-washed, you can use a spot cleaner or a carpet cleaning vacuum for small stains. For a deep clean, use the gentle spray setting on your hose to dampen them. Then, scrub with a soft bristle brush, and let them air dry hanging in an airy space (maybe on your porch) or lying flat on a dry surface. Try not to let them air dry in direct sunlight, as that can cause the colors to fade.

Plastic outdoor furniture
Credit: sever180/ iStock

Plastic

Plastic is a little easier to deal with, but can still attract a fair amount of dirt and grime. Grab your soap, some water, and a soft bristle brush to give your chairs and tables a quick clean.

If there’s a particularly stubborn stain on a plastic piece of furniture, mix water with chlorine bleach (in a ratio of 10 parts water to one part bleach) and rub it with a microfiber cloth.

Wicker outdoor furniture

Wicker

Wicker furniture is classic and looks great in your yard, but it can’t stand up to harsher cleaning chemicals. To avoid dirt buildup, you should clean regularly with soap, water, and a soft brush. You can also vacuum with the brush attachment to pull up dust and pollen. A dust brush on its own is also useful for quickly dealing with leaves, pollen, and dirt.

Sun damage is one of the biggest problems for wicker furniture. If it’s going to sit in direct sunlight during most of the day, make sure you have covers for your chairs, couches, and tables. These are useful for all your outdoor furniture, no matter the material.

Wood

Comfortable, long-lasting, and functional, wood furniture is a great addition to your backyard. It doesn’t rust like metal or fall apart like plastic, but it still requires attention to make sure it stays in peak condition.

For basic cleaning, use your vacuum with the brush attachment, a handheld brush, and soap and water for a quick wipe-down. To remove mildew or mold stains, mix a gallon of hot water with a small scoop of powdered bleach and scrub the mildewed area with your bristle brush. Then rinse the area again with clean water and dry it.

How to Create the Perfect Backyard Movie Theater

Home | Updated: April 15, 2025

I’ve always been a movie buff, but these days, I prefer the comfort and convenience of having the theater experience at home. With a simple projector and screen, I’ve completely transformed how I enjoy movies. You can do the same in your own backyard with only a few pieces of equipment — no major DIY skills needed. At home, moviegoer annoyances like people playing with their phones in the dark theater or increasingly expensive snacks are no issue. It will become the ultimate cinematic experience for you and your family. Here are a few ways you can create the perfect movie theater at home.

Prices are accurate as of April 15, 2025. Subject to change.

Choose a Projector

You don’t need to spend a lot for a good-quality projector. This portable and easy-to-set-up option by Panseba has been sufficient for my needs, and though its list price is $100, it’s usually discounted. Just about everything you’ll need to get started is in the box, including an HDMI cable to plug into your laptop (which I do), a power cord to keep it running, a remote, and a screen with sticky-back hangers to hang in a convenient spot for everyone to view. However, higher-end options are available, such as the Aurzen Smart Projector. Unlike the Panseba option, you can connect several streaming accounts to the projector, so you don’t have to worry about connecting it to your computer.

Set Up Your Screen

The Panseba projector comes with a screen, but you may want a higher-quality one. I recommend this portable 120-inch option. It’s suitable for both indoors and out, and it comes with ropes, hooks, and double-sided tape for hanging. If you don’t want to hang a screen on a wall, especially if you plan to take your movie theater experience on the go, you may want a screen with a stand. That one’s a bit more expensive, but the setup is smooth for outdoor use, and it even has a travel bag for easy carrying.

Enhance Your Audio

Once you have your method of viewing set up, you’ll want to consider your audio. Projectors typically have decent sound, but adding a Bluetooth speaker gives you that authentic movie theater experience. JBL is one of the best Bluetooth speaker brands, with many options across sizes and price points. I recommend the waterproof Charge 4 for its excellent sound and 20-hour battery life. I also like that it has an aux port, which I find to be the easiest method of connecting a speaker to a portable projector. It. However, if you want something low-cost, consider the Uakinat Mini Bluetooth Speaker. It may not have the frills of the JBL, but it’s under $10 and, from my experience, has decent sound.

Choose Comfortable Seating

You have your movie projector and screen set up, you have good sound, and now you need a comfortable place to sit outside. There’s a wide variety of options to consider. I like the Best Choice Products Oversized Padded Zero Gravity Chair. It’s portable and can support up to 300 pounds. Plus, it has a removable tray for holding your favorite beverages and a phone or tablet. If you want something cozier and more comfortable, you may like the Big Joe Milano Outdoor Bean Bag Chair. It’s lightweight, weatherproof, and easy to maneuver around if you want to make sure you get the best view.

Get Your Movie Snacks & Beverages

If you are truly investing in your backyard cinema, the Nostalgia Popcorn Maker Cart is a must-have. It’s designed like an old-school, professional popcorn cart and makes up to 32 cups, with base storage for holding toppings and treats. It goes well with these movie theater popcorn bags, perfect if you have neighbors or friends over to indulge in your new backyard theater. Add a rolling ice chest to stay stocked up on drinks too. You can roll it over for your guests to grab their beverages before the movie starts, and it also has a bottom shelf for storing plates, bowls, or cups.

8 Household Items That Will Keep Mosquitoes Away

Ali Eldridge
Health | Updated: June 25, 2024
Woman with a backpack spraying bug spray to keep bugs away
Better Report

It’s time to take a stand against unwanted guests at summer picnics. That’s right, we’re talking about mosquitoes. Nothing ruins a backyard barbecue like the smell of mosquito repellant wafting through the air, not to mention itchy, swollen bug bites. Fortunately, some household items can work double-duty as a mosquito repellant and are surprisingly effective. Here are some fast, simple, realistic ways to create homemade mosquito repellents using items you might already have.

Credit: Wachiwit/ iStock

Coffee Grounds

Don’t toss your leftover coffee grounds in the trash just yet. Although coffee is part of many morning routines, insects don’t share in this ritual — they downright hate coffee. According to the pest control experts at Mr. Mister Mosquito Control, “Mosquitoes are repulsed by all types of coffee, whether it is fresh, used, or burnt.” Sprinkle coffee grounds around your patio, pool, garden beds, and potted plants. (Coffee grounds also have vital nutrients that can boost plant health.) For even better results, burn coffee grounds to amplify the smell. To do this, find a heat-safe container, such as a recycled candle jar, and pack in the grounds. Then, light the grounds at the center and watch the coffee-scented smoke effectively repel unwanted garden guests.

Garlic

Do-it-yourself sprays are a low-cost and effective way to dissuade mosquitoes. One of the best sprays is garlic oil — it’s even used in professional pest control products. Mosquitoes dislike the sulfides in garlic, which give it its pungent smell, so they’ll steer clear of your home. To make garlic spray yourself, blend a few cloves of garlic and water, then strain the mixture into a spray bottle using a mesh colander. Fill the rest of the bottle with warm water, shake, and spray away.

Essential Oils

Mosquitoes hate lemongrass, thyme, chamomile, cedarwood, rosemary, citronella, eucalyptus, tea tree, and lavender essential oils. These can be added (a few drops at a time) in water to make a spray for inside and outside the home and on yourself. “These essential oils are found to be a mask for the odors that female mosquitoes are attuned to when searching for a blood meal,” explains pest control specialist Shannon Harlow-Ellis. If you’re wondering how long these DIY repellents last, follow this rule: “Once the fragrance is gone, the repellency is gone,” says Rita Stadler of Earth Kind. You should be ready to reapply repellent frequently to reap the benefits.

Cardboard

Mosquitoes can’t stand smoke, but sometimes, lighting a roaring campfire in the middle of the day isn’t practical. Instead, head to your recycling bin. You can burn any type of cardboard box, including egg cartons (not the styrofoam kind), pizza boxes, and drink holders. Place the cardboard somewhere safe to burn, such as in a firepit on your grill, and let it rip. You’ll be pest-free in no time.

Coconut Oil

This Martha Stewart-approved DIY mosquito repellent lotion will surely be a summertime hit — you can even make it with your kids. All you need is two ingredients: coconut oil and peppermint essential oil. Mix around one-third cup of coconut oil with 15 drops of peppermint essential oil and store in an air-tight jar. This mixture will be very soft or liquid at room temperature, but storing it in the fridge transforms it into a solid lotion. Apply it with your hands anywhere on your skin to deter mosquitoes. Tip: If you aren’t a fan of peppermint, use a different essential oil.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon can repel all sorts of insects. Brunch With Babs, who has reached millions on social media, shared her go-to recipe for cinnamon spray. Whisk two teaspoons of cinnamon powder into four cups of warm water. Let it steep for a few minutes (as you would tea), and drain it into an empty spray bottle using a mesh colander. Next, add half a teaspoon of rubbing alcohol and half a teaspoon of dish detergent. Shake to mix and spray it anywhere outside — it can even be used on yourself! Tip: Cinnamon sticks can have the same effect, so try using them as table decorations or garnishes during your picnics.

Outdoor Fans

Move any portable fans outside when prepping for a summertime picnic or outdoor dinner. Mosquitoes are naturally weak fliers, so you might’ve noticed you get more bites on still, humid days than on breezy ones. Fans disrupt airflow enough to block the bugs’ paths. Studies also suggest that fans help disperse odors and confuse mosquitoes, who follow chemical cues when searching for their next meal. Any fan will do, but an oscillating pedestal fan is the best option to cover a large outdoor area such as a patio. This option from Lasko is a great choice and is backed by over 1,500 strong reviews.

Birds

Lure mosquito-eating predators into your yard with items you already have in your home. Birds are an incredible natural mosquito repellent — they eat hundreds of insects daily. Attract more birds to your home by keeping your bird feeders well-stocked. To find which bird seed is best for your yard, research what your local bird population eats. Some DIY birdseed items you might already have around the house include peanuts, cracked corn, almonds, oats, pecans, walnuts, dried fruit, and sunflower seeds. You can also make DIY bird feeders using empty bottles or milk cartons.
