After a long summer, chilly fall air feels refreshing. With the crunchy leaves, pumpkin patches, and Halloween decor comes a warm, nostalgic feeling — which is likely why I gravitate towards vintage-style decorations. But if you haven’t noticed, Halloween decorations have gotten… large as of late. Inflatables have been a hit for a while, but recently, it seems every retailer is in a competition for the tallest, most viral Halloween sensation, from 12-foot skeletons and lovable pumpkins to horror movie animatronics. These are some of the most fun (and kookiest) super-sized Halloween decorations available now.

Home Depot 12-Foot Skeleton

Home Depot started the trend with the release of its 12-foot skeleton with LED eyes now referred to as Skelly. These massive, goofy lawn ornaments started to pop up in neighborhood yards or business parking lots, usually left up all year and often with changing decor to match the current season. This new, 2.0 version has updated eyes with eight presets so they too can change with the holidays (like switching to hearts in February or fireworks in July, for example). Owners of the original can upgrade their Skelly with a new eye package too. And obviously, Skelly needs a 7-foot dog companion.

After the success of its skeleton, Home Depot went hard with the oversized decor launches. If Skelly isn’t cutting it, maybe a 7-foot Frankenstein’s Monster or a 13-foot Jack Skellington is more your style.

Last year, Lewis took the internet by storm and I haven’t stopped thinking about him since. Nothing against Skelly, but I think this is the best decoration you can get if you have the space for an 8-foot pumpkin ghoul. He’s back this year along with some friends, including a baby Lewis that sadly doesn’t speak. To save money and my husband’s sanity, I opted for the new $30 hanging version. It’s not giant, but it is much bigger than I expected and still includes sound so he can recite his now-famous phrases like, “I am not a Jack-o’-lantern, my name is Lewis.”

Beetlejuice decor is always in style, but with the recent release of the sequel (aptly named Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), we expect to see lots of on-theme displays this Halloween. You can get an animatronic of the man himself, but I personally love the idea of a sandworm coming through your front yard as trick-or-treaters approach. This is for oversized-display lovers who are tight on oversized space and storage.

I don’t love animatronics, as I’m not totally convinced one might not come to life one day. But as a die-hard fan of Scream, I appreciate that this features the voice of the original Ghostface, Roger L. Jackson. It’s meant for indoors or covered areas, however. If you buy directly from Spirit rather than Amazon, the base price is cheaper, but you may end up paying the same or more with shipping. It’s worth it to compare and see if pickup is available for less.

In early September, Apple announced its next generation of iPhones — the base iPhone 16, as well as a Plus, Pro, and Pro Max. If you’re upgrading, many of these accessories will still work, but be sure to read the fine print first. The 16’s new camera control button requires specific cases.

Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Gen)

There are tons of great headphones available across budgets, but Apple’s own earbuds offer solid sound quality and easy connectivity. The standard AirPods are fine, but the hard plastic can start to hurt after a while. The Pros have soft ear tips that eliminate that issue — they come with four sizes for a customized fit. They are equipped with active noise cancellation and are dust-, sweat-, and water-resistant. Apple recently announced that the AirPods Pro will get a software update to include hearing tests and they can then function as a hearing aid. We’re excited to try those features when they’re available.

The AirPods Max over-ear headphones are beautiful with great audio quality and long battery life. But they’re quite pricey and some people find they’re too tight after a long day of wearing them. At the September Apple event, a new AirPods Max model was announced. They come in some great new colors, but not much else has been updated other than finally adding USB-C charging.

Sony’s WH-1000XM5 headphones are also pricey, but they’re among the best headphones around. You’ll notice a sound upgrade, comfortable fit, and 30 hours of battery life. If you can splurge, you won’t be disappointed — they’re often slightly discounted too.

Smart Watches

Apple Watch Series 9

If you have an iPhone, an Apple Watch is the best smartwatch for monitoring notifications and health updates. Most modern phones will do great with the Series 9, which is brighter than previous models and includes cycle tracking. The Watch Series 10 was just announced. We haven’t used it yet, but it has a bigger, brighter screen that’s easier to read at an angle.

Apple Watch Ultra 2

If you’re an adventurer who needs something rugged and powerful, you might prefer the Ultra 2. It costs more than most people need to spend on a watch, but it offers multiple days of battery life, 1000-meters of water resistance, and advanced exercise metrics. A new Ultra 2 was also announced at the September Apple Event. It has some upgraded aesthetics as well as new water sport tracking, but it’s not a big difference if you already own this version.

Thankfully, the brand has its own and this one uses suction to attach to a dashboard or windshield in the car, but can also work for desks or any other surface you might want to use it on. If you’re charging your phone while using it, there’s a slot for your cord to stay tidy too. PopSocket also has a vent clip mount.

Hopefully you’re already using strong, unique passwords, and wherever possible, two-factor authentication. Are Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes Worth the Investment?

I take cat ownership very seriously. That means most of my time and resources are dedicated to making sure my three cats are happy and healthy with full bellies and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ll even deal with the litter boxes.

I’ve grown accustomed to the routine, but constantly scooping is not exactly anyone’s favorite part of having a pet. Self-cleaning litter boxes could be worth the hefty investment if this is your most hated chore, but there are health and safety factors to keep in mind. These two are the best options from trustworthy brands. We’ve also included advice and things to consider when deciding to purchase one, plus a helpful health accessory for standard boxes.

How Do Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes Work?

When a self-cleaning litter box detects a cat has been inside — and importantly, has left — it starts a clean cycle. As the drum turns, litter passes through a sifter, separating the clumps and forcing them to fall into the waste drawer underneath. Then it cycles back, emptying the clean litter into the drum. The newest boxes complete a clean in about two minutes.

Health and safety concerns are the top two things that make some cat experts hesitant to recommend a self-cleaning litter box. Reputable companies have taken these factors into account, but you still have to be proactive.

While you might not enjoy the act of scooping, it gives you insight into your cats’ health. Cats, especially males, are prone to urinary blockages and other infections. If a cat stops urinating, it could become fatal in a matter of days. Self-cleaning boxes eliminate the ability to see how many clumps are accumulating every day, so if you aren’t actively paying attention, you can miss important cues. On the other hand, the boxes recommended here have connected apps that track visits. As long as you’re monitoring it, this might actually put frequent visits on your radar faster than normal. Some apps are better than others at exactly what information they provide, but in general they specify what time a cat visited and how much they weighed — if you have multiple cats of different sizes, you can be sure you know who is going when. Empty the drawer frequently and make sure that clumps look normal too.

Safety is also important. Our favorites here are loaded with safety sensors so cats won’t get harmed in the cleaning process. They detect when a cat is inside, when they’ve left, and even if they’re close to the opening so that everything can stop as a precaution. But you’re still relying on technology that can fail. If you notice anything amiss with the mechanics, turn it off and contact the company to see if it can be repaired. The best safety measures don’t matter if the sensors go.

If the prices here scare you and you’re looking at cheap self-cleaning litter boxes from unknown brands, I’d reconsider. There’s no way to be sure they’re safe, tested, and reliable long-term and there are reports of some boxes harming, often fatally, people’s pets. Just get a great standard box instead.

Will Your Cat Like Them?

Every cat tends to prefer a different type of litter box. Of my three cats, one will use anything and the other two are picky, preferring basic, open-top boxes (there’s a recommendation for one of those below too). Some cats are scared of the movement and won’t get in them at all, which could cause the health problems listed above. If you’re unsure, consider trying a few different types of standard boxes first — like an open-top and a covered one — before spending several hundred dollars on one of these, and always keep a regular box elsewhere as they’re getting used to the new one. We’ve noted below each brand’s return policy.

The Best Option: Whisker Litter-Robot 4

Many people call the entire category of self-cleaning boxes “Litter Robots,” but that’s actually the name of the boxes sold by the brand Whisker. The Litter-Robot 4 is modern looking, with a large drum that bigger cats should appreciate, and it’s nearly silent when it cleans. Sensors detect cats that weigh at least 3 pounds, and lasers are continuously scanning safety zones so cleaning cycles will stop the moment a cat jumps into the drum or even stands on the step — it paused a cleaning cycle when I held my hand inside without touching anything. The app is reliable and has added more health and safety features since I last tested it. Whisker’s newest accessory, the Litter Hopper, automatically refills the drum with fresh cat litter.

The Litter-Robot 4 is the priciest of our favorites, but Whisker offers a 90-day trial. You will need to pay for return shipping, however, and it must be in the original box.

A Close Second: Casa Leo Leo’s Loo Too

The Leo’s Loo Too is very similar to the Litter-Robot 4 in size, design, and function, but you can usually save somewhere between $50 and $100 if you go with this one. I found the design quite cute, but the drum is a little more compact than the Litter-Robot. Some cats may not like the cramped quarters. The sensors on the Leo’s Loo are even more advanced than the Litter-Robot, immediately stopping a cycle if you get even close to it. It also detects cats as small as a single pound. The app was straight-forward and accurate, never missing a bathroom visit.

Casa Leo (named after the founder’s cat) also offers a 90-day return window as long as you have the original package and pay the $75 return fee. If you purchase on Amazon, contact customer service there first for a return.

A Good Standard Box: Smart Paws Large Litter Box

Even if you get a fancy self-cleaning box, it’s good practice to have a basic box too. (I know, I know, you wanted to avoid this.) You don’t know if your cat will like a moving box or how long it will take them to get used to it, and there should always be an option available just in case one breaks.

I’ve tried what feels like hundreds of basic options, and I simply love the Smart Paws box. It’s large with high sides and a low step so nearly every cat should be happy using it. There are no small crevices for clumps to stick in, and it’s made from lightweight, soft plastic that is surprisingly resilient against cat claws — and it dampens some of the sound of the scratching. I’ve bought several and can never see myself going back to another type of pan.

For Health Monitoring Without a Fancy Box: Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor System

If you like the idea of all the health monitoring that comes with the apps, but don’t want to get a whole new litter box, I highly recommend this Petivity monitor. It sits under any standard litter box and detects with great accuracy which cat went to the bathroom and what they did when they got there. It also monitors weight and typical bathroom habits, alerting you if there’s a sudden change. The Petivity monitor works with up to five cats, though the brand recommends waiting until they’re past kittenhood since their weight and habits are changing dramatically then. When I moved across the country and had to decide what absolutely had to come with us, we got rid of our self-cleaning litter boxes but kept this. I think it’s worth every penny.

Your Floors Are Dirtier Than You Think — Here’s How to Really Clean Them

Keeping your house or apartment clean is a chore. No matter whether yours is big, small, or somewhere in between, you know it, too, and no part of it is harder to keep permanently spotless than your floors. It’s a universal problem and vacuuming only gets you so far. Simply put, vacuums suck — and that’s about it. They collect the loose dirt and debris lying on the surface, maybe even the finer particulate you can’t even see, but they do tackle stuck-on stickiness, stains, smudges, or the invisible layer of “ick” lurking throughout your home.

To truly clean your home, you have to use a floor steamer — but not just any floor steamer. It Works Everywhere — and Well

The beauty of Dupray’s multipurpose steam cleaner is its versatility. While it’s built like a vacuum cleaner, it isn’t locked into one’s limited functionality. You can remove the flat, floor-cleaning nozzle and swap in the triangle tool (with or without the bonnet), the standalone steam lance, or a nylon or brass brush. Each one has its own specific strengths, giving you a strong bullpen of cleaning tools to choose from. If you need to remove stuck-on grease from your stovetop, one of the firmer brushes will surely do the trick. If you need to clean your tub, try the bonnet atop the triangle nozzle. I, for one, will go through all three pads on my first-level hardwood floors — where my house gets the most foot traffic — in a single session if I haven’t used it in a while. They’re machine-washable, though, so once I’ve thoroughly soiled them, I can toss them in the wash, tackle my window, and return to cleaning my second and third floors once they’ve dried out.

Now, each time I clean, I wonder whether my cleaning could be made easier by this machine — “Will the steamer get this stain up?” I constantly ask myself. If it needs cleaning, this machine can probably do the job, I’ve learned.

It’s Simple to Use and Easy to Understand

The machine has one button that’s both an on and off switch and an LED ring to indicate when it’s heating and when it’s fully at temperature. Orange means it’s warming and green signals it’s ready to go. When you’re done cleaning, just press it again to turn it off. (Or simply unplug it.)

When you’re using the wand, you can lock the trigger in place, too, which means you don’t actively need to press it down to release steam. That’s helpful when making repetitive motions across hard surfaces or batch-cleaning lines of grout or multiple window sills.

It Doesn’t Take Up Much Space

Because of its versatility, I move this machine around quite a bit — and I have no problem doing so despite it being corded. It’s on wheels, and a collapsible handle makes it easy to lift over ledges, up the stairs, or into a different room if you don’t feel like dragging it by its wand.

When I’m done with it, it fits neatly in my linen closet, which, to be transparent, isn’t very big: Its true measurements are 10.5 by 10.5 by 9.5 inches, which makes it a near-perfect square (on wheels, with a long, but collapsible, wand to boot). Plus, if it’s in your way, you can just wheel it in either direction to reach whatever you’re grabbing for behind or beside it.

It Doesn’t Require a Ton of Water

A full tank for the Dupray is just under 7 cups of water. That’s an easy amount to draw straight from your faucet in one or two trips if you have the right vessel. It’s not necessarily the easiest to lift straight onto your counter or beneath an outdoor spigot, and, as many reviewers, myself included, have noted, there’s no indicator for the internal water level, which means you’re guessing how much it needs (and how much you’re actually putting in, too).

That means it’s smarter to slowly fill it with a smaller cup instead of overflowing it with a faucet on full blast. In the grand scheme of things, though, 7 cups is not much at all, and you get a lot of steam from this small amount of water — enough for 50 minutes of cleaning time to be exact. That’s more than enough time to tackle most projects, but if not, there are a few rules to note before refilling: You have to let the machine cool down completely before refilling, which does limit its ability to clean exceedingly large spaces. Opening it while hot could cause a kind of steam explosion, and you’re likely to get burned.
