Why You Should Care About Your Skin Barrier

Health | Updated: December 18, 2025

Based in Los Angeles, Megan blends over five years of publisher experience with a data-first approach to commerce content. She’s collaborated with leading commerce teams at Real Simple, Better Homes & Gardens, Reader’s Digest, and Taste of Home to name a few. When she’s not diving into product trends, you’ll find her exploring new adventures as a newlywed or spoiling her rescue dog, Ram Ram.

Most of us think of aging skin simply as the emergence of deep-rooted wrinkles. In reality, the process begins much closer to the surface. Long before those lines appear, the outermost layers of your skin start to lose the ability to stay hydrated, resilient, and even-toned. As we age, skin naturally becomes thinner, produces less oil, and loses elasticity. These changes weaken the skin barrier, making it more vulnerable to everyday stressors like sun exposure, pollution, dry air, and harsh skincare ingredients. When the barrier struggles, skin doesn’t just look older, it often feels more reactive, dry, and uneven, too.

What Is the Skin Barrier?

Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin, also known as the stratum corneum.  Dermatologist Melissa Piliang, MD, explains that your skin barrier is, in fact, dead, not alive, and is made up of dead cells, lipids, proteins, and fats that help protect your skin from the environment. That means you should think of the skin barrier as a brick wall. Skin cells are the bricks, while lipids such as ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids serve as the mortar that holds everything together. When that structure is intact, moisture stays in, and irritants stay out. Over time, your skin produces fewer of the lipids that keep the barrier intact, especially ceramides and fatty acids. Without enough of these, tiny gaps form in the barrier, making it harder for skin to stay hydrated and calm.

Signs Your Skin Barrier May Be Compromised

Most people start noticing barrier-related changes in their mid-30s or early 40s. Your skin may suddenly feel drier, more sensitive, or slower to recover after irritation, even if you haven’t changed your routine. Environmental exposure and daily habits can accelerate this process, especially when combined with natural aging. You might notice persistent tightness, flaking, or rough texture that doesn’t seem to improve with moisturizer. Products that once felt fine may suddenly sting, and redness or irritation can become more common. Studies show that skin barrier disruption and sensitivity often go hand in hand, which helps explain why redness, stinging, and irritation are usually early warning signs. Healing tends to slow down as well, leaving the skin looking dull or uneven for longer periods.

How to Protect and Strengthen Your Skin Barrier

Barrier damage usually happens gradually. Daily exposure to sun, pollution, wind, and dry air all takes a toll, especially over time. That said, your skincare habits can play a role, too: Harsh cleansers, frequent exfoliation, or overly active routines can strip away the lipids skin relies on. Strengthening the skin barrier is less about simply doing more and more about supporting what your skin naturally needs as it changes. Hydration is essential, but so is replenishing the lipids and nutrients that decline with age.

Ingredients like ceramides help reinforce the barrier’s structure and prevent moisture loss, while niacinamide supports ceramide production and calms inflammation. Hyaluronic acid also plays an important role and has a unique capacity to retain water for a happy, healthy-looking barrier, making it especially valuable as natural levels decline with age. Antioxidants round things out by helping protect skin from free radical damage caused by sun exposure and pollution.

Barrier-Friendly Products for Those Over 35

As skin moves through its mid-30s and beyond, it often becomes less forgiving. Making the switch to gentler, barrier-supportive products can be one of the most impactful changes you make, and it doesn’t have to mean overhauling everything at once. Skin barrier repair takes time. As the Cleveland Clinic notes, skin barrier damage doesn’t happen overnight; nor does its repair, and it may take up to four months to see noticeable improvement.

A good place to start is with your cleanser. Something gentle and non-stripping can help remove makeup, oil, and daily buildup without leaving skin dry. The Eight Saints Down To Earth Mud Gel Face Wash does precisely that, using natural clays to purify and antioxidants to make it gentle on sensitive skin.

A daily moisturizer is where barrier repair really happens. A lightweight yet hydrating formula like Eight Saints Daydreamer Soothing Moisturizer replenishes moisture with hyaluronic acid, while the jojoba oil locks in hydration with the same properties as the oils produced by your skin’s sebaceous glands.

At night, skin does its best repair work. A richer option, my personal favorite, is the Eight Saints Up the Anti Night Cream. It supports overnight recovery with ingredients like niacinamide, peptides, and hyaluronic acid, ideal if dryness or sensitivity tends to show up by morning. It makes my dry skin feel moisturized and soft when I wake up and cleanse.

Finally, sunscreen remains essential year-round. Daily UV exposure slowly weakens the skin barrier, even on cloudy days. Eight Saints Chase the Sun Broad Spectrum SPF 30 offers mineral protection and moisturizes, making it easier to wear every day.

The goal isn’t to sell you more skin products; it’s to give it what it needs to stay balanced, calm, and resilient as it changes over time.

Why Your Dishwasher Is Leaving Dishes Dirty

Better Report

Doing the dishes by hand isn’t for the faint of heart, which is why homes have a dishwasher in the center of their kitchen. Most of them look (and operate) the same: you fill it, insert your pod (or liquid detergent), and select your cycle. It runs, chimes incessantly, and then your dishes are sparkly clean, ready to be used again. Right? Right? Too often, dishes that go into your dishwasher dirty come out the same way — cleaner but not completely clean.

So, what are you supposed to do? Well, you shouldn’t scrub dishes by hand before putting them in: Though it seems counterintuitive, modern detergents and dishwashers are designed to work more effectively with some food residue. It’s true; the enzymes in your detergent need food particles to activate, and the dishwasher’s sensors may adjust the wash cycle based on the level of dirtiness. (Smart, huh?) But if that isn’t your problem, it could be a dirty filter or the detergent you’re buying.

Dropps Ultrawash Plus (64 Pods)

BUY FOR $34 AT DROPPS
BUY FOR $35 AT AMAZON

You see, dishwasher detergent has become an oddly crowded category. You can buy pods that promise streak-free glassware, powders that insist they’re safer for the planet, liquids engineered for “tough jobs,” or tablets wrapped in materials no one can pronounce. Somewhere in that mix sits Dropps, a brand that built its name on sustainability long before it was a trendy marketing move. Their latest product, the UltraWash Plus pods, is the company’s most confident attempt to move from “eco-friendly alternative” to “everyday essential.”

The UltraWash Plus is a pod-style detergent with a biobased certification from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That certification means most of the ingredients come from biological sources rather than petroleum, making it ideal for shoppers who care about environmental impact but don’t have the patience to decode ingredient lists. The pods themselves use a chambered design — separate compartments that hold detergent, enzymes, and a degreasing liquid. This isn’t just for show, though it looks cool. Dishwasher detergents rely heavily on enzymes to break down food, and when those enzymes mingle with the wrong ingredients too early, they lose their effectiveness. By isolating them until the wash cycle begins, UltraWash Plus aims to deliver better cleaning power without relying on harsher chemicals.

Are the Tiny Red Dots on Your Skin Dangerous?

Of course, your detergent ultimately has to work, and while the UltraWash Plus pods don’t surmount the strongest, most aggressive pods on the market, they sit comfortably near the top. They clean standard daily messes without drama, handle proteins and sauces effectively, and don’t require pre-rinsing dishes. And that last point matters more than people realize: pre-rinsing wastes water and time, and needing to do it undercuts whatever a detergent claims about convenience or cleaning strength. So, if you want a pod that aligns with your sustainability goals without feeling like a step backward, Dropps makes that decision easy.

The Best Cyber Monday Deals, According to Our Editors

Ali Eldridge
Wealth | Updated: December 23, 2025
Better Report

It takes time to find a good deal and even more to find a great one, which is why our editors have been hard at work compiling the scroll-stopping steals on Amazon and beyond. Whether you want to prep for a springtime hobby, are in the market for new boots, or are stocking up on everyday household items while they’re on sale, these are the items you’re actually saving money on, according to our editors.

Shopping Tip: If you have a long list of people to buy gifts for, it’s best to approach Cyber Monday with a few ideas already in mind. Don’t let the deals trick you into purchasing something your recipient doesn’t need or want. Could one person really use a Kindle? Maybe your spouse hasn’t stopped mentioning a new mattress. A little prep work makes sorting through thousands of discounts more manageable.

Stop Letting Your Home Videos Collect Dust

Chances are, your home videos are probably hidden away in your attic or basement, collecting dust. Who even owns a VHS player anymore? And that cord you need to connect your old camcorder to your computer? That disappeared a decade (or two) ago. We’re blessed — or cursed, depending on how you look at it — with the ability to record anything, in an instant, directly on our phones. Saved to the cloud, never to be lost or taped over. That’s great and all, but only for future events. Those tapes contain memories many are eager to relive. And, thankfully, there’s a way — without needing access to a working VHS player.

So long as you can find them, you can send your tapes to Legacybox for digitization. They make it easy, too: they send you a pre-labeled box with everything you need. You fill it with your stickered analog media — VHS tapes, reels, cassettes, old photo strips, printed pictures — seal it shut, and send it back. Once it arrives at their Tennessee digitization center, trained technicians attend to every asset individually, providing personalized updates along the way.

Once complete, your analog media will be mailed back to you, along with links to your digital copies. They live in the Legacybox Cloud, a separate service dedicated to storing digitized assets. Here, you can scroll through your photos, watch your videos, and generate links for others to do the same. From here, you can also download the files onto any device. As with most add-ons nowadays, it’s free for 30 days. After that, access is extra, but so long as you downloaded your files, you shouldn’t need it — unless you send in more tapes and photos. Plus, you can opt to receive your files on a disc set or a thumb drive.

Picking the Right Legacybox

Your options range from Starter (two items) to Vault (80 items). So, if you have just a few videos you want digitized, Starter could work. That said, most families need Family or higher. (Even a 20-item box fills up fast.) Right now, Legacybox is running its best sale of the year: 50% off every level. That means you can get 40 items digitized for the price it typically costs to convert 10.

2 ITEMS FOR $35 (ORIG. $70)
10 ITEMS FOR $160 (ORIG. $320)
20 ITEMS FOR $320 (ORIG. $640)
40 ITEMS FOR $625 (ORIG. $1,250)
80 ITEMS FOR $1,250 (ORIG. $2,500)

The process typically takes 4-6 weeks, but this can vary depending on the number of inbound submissions. Expedited processing is an option, and that shortens the timeline to 3-4 weeks. Guaranteed rush will get you your digitized files in 10 business days. The time it takes to process your files also depends on the number of items you sent, their condition, and their format — Legacybox doesn’t restore photos or videos; it uploads them as they’re scanned, but it will dedicate additional time and resources to unique film or photo types.

As explained earlier, the Starter kit lets you send in two items. The Vault option allows up to 80. These boxes look the same, but they arrive with different numbers of pre-paid barcodes to stick to each item. This range enables families to choose the option that accounts for assets from all members — meaning that if you have 80 items and want to build your own accessible family archive, you can do so and split the cost, which might seem steep, evenly among all contributors.

These Gift Sets Are Almost Too Good to Give Away

Ali Eldridge
Health | Updated: December 19, 2025
Better Report

Founded by former pro snowboarder Nima Jalali, Salt & Stone is rooted in a fundamental understanding of the elements and how they affect our skin. Every formula blends naturally derived actives from the sea and the mountains with clean, gender-neutral scents designed to ground you, energize you, or simply make an everyday ritual feel more intentional.

If you have been thinking about making the switch to aluminum-free deodorant, or are shopping for someone who always seeks out cleaner and smarter swaps, Salt & Stone is a smart place to start. Their deodorants have a cult following thanks to their clean bill of health, if you will: they use ingredients like prebiotics, spirulina, and niacinamide that support the skin rather than just mask odor or suppress your body’s natural process. The short version? It lets your skin breathe without sacrificing performance.

And the assortment makes a Salt & Stone set an effortless gift. The brand turns everyday moments like washing your hands, stepping into the shower, or grabbing a mist before heading out the door into aromatic, almost ceremonial rituals that ground you — they make the mundane feel elevated and indulgent. Gifting someone the deodorant to replace their perfume, when they forget to put it on, or a body wash that makes their somewhat unclean shower feel like a spa.

Our Favorites Under $50

Deodorant & Mini Body Mist Duo

This duo is my go-to when I want something simple but still upmarket. You get Salt & Stone’s aluminum-free deodorant and a travel-sized body mist. My favorite is Black Rose and Oud. It smells warm and a little floral, with notes of black rose, lily of the valley, oud, and amber. Use the deodorant for long-lasting freshness, then layer the mist to boost the scent throughout the day.

Each formula comprises prebiotics, spirulina, antioxidants, and niacinamide to keep skin unbothered, balanced, and smooth.

Body Wash Discovery Set

These TSA-friendly washes are gym-bag-to-jet-plane staples. Powered by ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and prebiotics, they keep your skin soft and hydrated while you cleanse. The set includes four of the brand’s most popular scents, from the warm, grounded Santal and Vetiver to the bright and uplifting Bergamot and Hinoki. It’s the perfect way to turn your regular shower routine into a spa-like ritual.

0.1% of People Retire With This Much Money. Will You?

Better Report

For retirees, a million dollars has always seemed like a solid goal. $1 million puts your mind at ease. Without doing the math to back into an annual salary, the sum should be enough to keep you afloat (and then some) through retirement, allowing you to do largely what you want and live where you please, enjoying your golden years to the fullest.

When you’re saving toward retirement, $1 million seems like an attainable plateau, too — somewhere you should reach, if all goes to plan. Though other surveys put that number closer to $4 million to be safe, a million is a commendable financial milestone that most will never reach. According to data from the Employee Benefit Research Institute’s analysis of the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances, just over 3% of retirees reach the $1 million milestone. 0.1% of them get to the $5 million mark. That means, in reality, most Americans are retiring with much less. Some have no savings at all, and, in turn, no investment income either.

That means reaching either of the aforementioned financial milestones is an incredible achievement. At that point, it’s more than a nest egg; it’s an estate — something that puts you, and your family, at a financial advantage for generations, potentially. But it comes with new challenges, which require you to work smartly to protect what you’ve built. When your assets grow, so do your tax considerations — and even minor missteps can cost you more than you think.

As such, it’s wise to seek out the most tax-efficient ways to manage your wealth. From optimizing your investment strategy to planning when and how to draw from your account, a tax-smart approach can make the difference between maintaining your wealth and watching it erode.

Fisher Investments’ free guide, Tax-Efficient Wealth Management for Affluent Investors (for those who have $5 million or more), breaks it all down. It offers forward-looking advice to strengthen and optimize your portfolio, along with clear, actionable tax management techniques for retirement. Inside, you’ll find strategies that affluent investors use to stay a step ahead — whether that’s timing capital gains, structuring income for lower tax exposure, or making smarter charitable and estate planning decisions.

Your Beauty Products Could Secretly Be Causing Dry Skin

Behind Scarlett Johansson’s red-carpet-ready glow is a lifetime of struggling with sensitive, reactive skin. After years of dealing with dryness, breakouts, and irritation, Johansson set out to collaborate on a line of products that were equally restorative and glam — what she wished she had: Products that would nourish, not strip, her skin, because she, like so many others, traced her skin issues back to the products she was using. “When I finally started taking care of my skin — nourishing it, moisturizing it — that’s when my skin started healing itself,” she said of her inspiration for founding The Outset.

Born from what Johansson calls a “radically gentle” approach to skincare, her sheer frustration with harsh products led her to go back to basics. Within a week, her skin began to heal, a transformation that became the foundation for The Outset’s clean, minimalist philosophy. The brand focuses on simple, hydrating essentials formulated for all skin types, especially for those who, like Scarlett, have struggled to find balance and were always either too oily or far too dry. Simply put, The Outset has something for everyone (and every skin type).

Botanical Barrier Rescue Balm

Soothe, soften, and restore with this ultra-rich, multi-purpose balm that rescues dry skin from head to toe. Infused with a blend of 10 nourishing oils, this luxurious yet non-greasy formula melts right in for instant comfort. I love keeping it in my bag for flights when my skin loses moisture; just a quick dab revives dry cuticles, chapped lips, or rough patches in seconds. It’s the ultimate multitasker for travel and everyday use.

Lip Oasis Glossy Treatment

This one’s a standout. Scarlett Johansson spent years perfecting Lip Oasis™, a conditioning treatment that hydrates, defines, and delivers a lasting, glossy finish. It’s the perfect hybrid between a balm and a gloss, giving you shine without the stickiness. In just four weeks, it boosts hydration by 48% and strengthens the lip barrier by 25%. You can also grab The Complete Collection, which includes all four sheer shades: Clear, Dune, Sun Kiss, and Mirage. Mirage, a soft blackberry tone, is my personal favorite for fall and winter.

The Hero Edit

Three multitasking essentials, a straightforward ritual. This set includes the Prep Serum, Rescue Balm, and Lip Oasis Glossy Treatment, each designed to hydrate, soothe, and support your skin barrier. It’s the perfect starter kit for someone who wants an easy, effective routine that feels luxurious without being complicated.

The Ritual Reset

Turn your skincare routine into a moment of mindfulness with this restorative set. It features The Outset’s bestselling 3-Step Regimen along with the Purifying Blue Clay Mask for a deep yet gentle detox. I can’t get enough of this mask; it clears blackheads and refines pores without drying my skin, leaving it soft and hydrated instead. It’s fragrance-free and perfect for sensitive skin, making it a relaxing treat to unwind with at the end of a long day.

These Strangely Smart Earplugs Helped Me Sleep Better

Ali Eldridge
Health | Updated: November 24, 2025
Woman sleeping under duvet at the sunny morning, top view.

My wife is an on-and-off earplug user, but she only ever uses the silicone ones — albeit the trendy, slightly more expensive Loop earplugs. They were dense and blocked out noise — the dull roar of a nearby highway, our air purifier, the heat kicking on, a car parallel parking on our narrow city street, a bar emptying, my snoring, so she says — but regularly disappeared into our bed. And, she has a habit of falling asleep to a podcast — one, I’ll add, that I particularly like. So, when sleep evades her, she’ll ask, “Can we put a podcast on?” Together, her earplugs and my podcast would be an unbeatable force in our bedroom — she’d be fast asleep every night. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. If she wears the earplugs, she can’t hear my podcast. While silence might eventually help her get some shut-eye, the podcast works quicker, and falling asleep to them is an increasingly common habit — there are even dedicated “sleep podcasts.”

Ozlo Sleepbuds

My wife said they worked wonders only a few nights into testing Ozlo’s Sleepbuds. Often on sale, the set comprises your buds, a case (with a non-slip silicone base), four sizes of silicone tips, and a USB charging cable. The accompanying app is free, and stores valuable insights into your rest habits, but also allows you to pick your soundscape, control your regular music, or read more about sleep science.

BUY FOR $299 (ORIG. $349) AT OZLO

They’re Earplugs That Can Play a Podcast, Automatically Switch to Sleep Sounds, and Still Play an Alarm

So, fulfilling my husbandly duties, I sought out a solution: find her earplugs that could play her favorite podcast — I say that sarcastically, though, because, when awake, she does like listening to it too — but power off once she fell asleep. Something with a sleep timer and sound quality like an earbud, but with the ability to block out noise — and not just with omnipresent whirr of noise cancellation tech. The Ozlo Sleepbuds let her choose music, a podcast, a meditation, or an audiobook from separate apps (e.g., Spotify) or one of Ozlo’s pre-loaded white- or pink-noise soundtracks. They’re expectedly fluid, rising and fading within each minute, but actually adjust to your body metrics and what’s happening around you. So, if light is polluting your room, the accompanying case, which you’re supposed to keep at your bedside, detects it and adjusts accordingly, reshaping the soundscape to keep you asleep. The same goes for noise pollution or temperature changes. (It’s a little weird that the pocket-sized case can do this, I’ll admit.)

The best part is that she didn’t have to choose one or the other, so she didn’t have to commit to white noise if she really wanted to listen to a TED Talk instead. She could set herself up, get tucked in, put on the playlist, album, or podcast of her choosing, fall asleep to it, and then be gently switched over to one of their “masking” sounds, which range from Crimson Cloak, a hand gliding across fabric-like wave that evokes the color red, to Soar, which recalls the roar of an airplane cabin, as soon as her Sleepbuds determined she was asleep. She preferred the one that sounded the least like a real-world thing, which meant we went with Crimson Cloak. (This feature was still in a beta phase at the time of testing, but it works by quietly pausing your song or podcast and replacing it with your chosen sleep sound.) And while other earplugs would make her miss her alarm the next morning, the Ozlo Sleepbuds have one, as expected, built in. The chime will play directly in your ears, slightly louder than the sleepscapes, to ensure you do indeed wake up.

They’re Barely There, But Is That a Bad Thing?

Throughout the night, without her noticing (because she was asleep, which, I guess, is the point), it tweaked itself to her body and her environment: her temperature, the room’s temperature, her breathing pattern, the light levels. But, like that famous philosophical thought experiment about trees falling in the forest, can my wife really know the soundscape responded to either if she wasn’t awake to notice? You see, that’s, in theory, the entire point, but we both couldn’t get past this. To date, she’s only used the earplugs when she needs them, so someone who is constantly exposed to the soundtrack might pick up on the subtleties it deploys after midnight better than my wife would, who, so long as the Sleepbuds worked, would never hear other iterations.

As for fit, to her surprise, they were wedgely snugly into her ear. A suite of silicone tips helps you find the right size for your ear, ensuring they don’t feel loose and do indeed create an additional sound-blocking seal. The base of the Sleepbud sits in what she and I called her ear’s “pocket.” Technically, it’s the “concha,” the deep, bowl-shaped hollow in the center of the external ear. The Sleepbud is the right size to sit comfortably in there, even when she sleeps on her side, without pressing into her ear or causing any skull pain. When I tried them on, albeit with one of the larger silicone tips, I thought they were among the most comfortable earbuds I’d worn, even if I have ones with better audio quality.

Courtesy of Ozlo

We could see these events and a snapshot report of her prior night’s sleep in the app as soon as her Sleepbuds were placed back into their smart case, which is only slightly bigger than your regular plastic earplug container. This generated report, which Ozlo calls Sleep Patterns, assigns scores to three essential goals: duration, consistency, and efficiency. Using a mix of self-reporting and app-tracked metrics, you get a holistic sense of how you slept, complete with insights you probably wouldn’t have picked up on — like how your husband’s habit of staying up late to watch sports impacts your nighttime routine. The self-reporting part does have to happen in the AM, though, and typically first thing: when your buds get put back into their case, your sleep data starts to sync. Then, you’re asked to rate how you are feeling and how you slept. Options range from “OK” to “Tired” to “Refreshed.”
