Why Having a Will Isn’t the Same as Estate Planning

You finally sit down to write your will — something you’ve meant to do for years. You name an executor and outline who should get what. It feels like a responsible milestone, maybe even a relief. Estate, planned. That moment can feel like the finish line. It isn’t, though.

A Will Is Just the Start

A will is one of the clearest ways to document your wishes. It lets you name someone to manage your estate and spell out who should receive specific assets, but it doesn’t necessarily simplify what comes next. Even with a will in place, your estate may still go through probate, the court process that oversees how assets are distributed.

But without a will or trust at all, state law may determine who receives your estate. So, yes, having a will is important, but it’s just one part of a full plan.

Other Tools for Estate Planning

Certain investment accounts, such as IRAs or transfer-on-death (TOD) accounts, let you name beneficiaries directly. These designations are often set and forgotten, but they play a major role in what actually happens with your assets. You can name both primary and contingent beneficiaries, and unless you update them, those choices typically stay in place.

Living trusts are another option. These written agreements let you name someone to manage your assets and specify who will receive them. Unlike a will, a living trust can also help if you become unable to manage your finances during your lifetime. Someone you trust could step in and handle things on your behalf, without waiting for a court’s permission.

For some investors, beneficiary designations and trusts don’t replace a will; they work alongside it. Each tool serves a different purpose, and understanding where they overlap can help clarify how a complete plan fits together.

It Only Works If the Money Adds Up

Estate planning isn’t just about completing the proper paperwork. Your investment strategy is equally important. If you aim to leave a specific amount behind, your portfolio must support that objective.

If you’re leaving assets to younger family members or organizations, there’s a chance they’ll need to rely on that money for years to come. That calls for a portfolio built for long-term growth. A plan on paper only works if the investment strategy is designed to execute it.

How to Turn Plans Into Peace of Mind

The process is complicated. That’s the simple truth, but doing the work to organize your estate while you’re still living ensures your plan will be properly executed. A will is an important starting point, but it may not cover everything on its own. Beneficiary designations, trusts, and investment decisions all shape what happens down the line.

For some people, that means thinking through how a spouse will access shared assets. For others, it’s about lessening the burden for adult children or fulfilling a charitable goal. Everyone’s reasons are different, but the value of a clear, connected plan is the same.

If you want a better sense of how these tools work together and what to consider next, Fisher Investments’ Investor’s Guide to Estate Planning can help.

Worried About Wrinkles? You Should Be Worried About This Instead

Ali Eldridge
Health | Updated: February 17, 2026
Better Report

As we age, it’s not just wrinkles we should worry about. We should be mindful of the gradual loss of hydration and elasticity that makes skin seem thinner, feel less firm, and look more uneven. As we age, collagen production slows, sebum production declines, and the outermost layers of the skin lose their ability to bounce back.

Everyday habits like taking hot showers can strip away the natural oils that help skin stay hydrated and support elasticity. When that protective layer is repeatedly stripped, it weakens the skin barrier, the outermost layer responsible for keeping moisture in and irritants out. Over time, a weakened skin barrier makes skin more reactive, dry, and vulnerable to sun damage, which is why dark spots also become more noticeable with age.

That’s why I’ve built my routine around ingredients that support both firmness and barrier health: Collagen peptides help counter the natural decline in collagen that begins in our 20s. As collagen and elastin fibers break down, skin loses firmness, and fine lines become more visible. Peptides provide amino acids that support collagen production and improve elasticity, which can help smooth and plump the look of skin over time. Think of them as building blocks that help reinforce the skin’s structure as natural collagen declines. Niacinamide (a form of vitamin B3) works differently but just as importantly. It strengthens the skin barrier, helps it retain moisture, improves uneven tone, and softens the appearance of pores and fine lines. It’s an ingredient that makes skin look healthier overall, not just younger.

Perfect One Lifting Gel

BUY FOR $58 AT AMAZON

Lately, I’ve been using PERFECT ONE Lifting Gel, a Japan-made product with an all-in-one formula designed for mature skin. It combines the aforementioned ingredients, collagen peptides and niacinamide, with retinol, squalane, centella, and botanical extracts in one lightweight gel. I like applying it before bed because it moisturizes without feeling heavy. By morning, my skin looks “dewey” and smoother, especially in areas where fine lines tend to show first. On nights when I’m using stronger serums, I’ll alternate, but on simpler nights, this works as both my serum and moisturizer.

If your goal is to slow the visible signs of aging,  whether that’s fine lines or loss of elasticity, focusing on hydration, barrier support, and collagen-stimulating ingredients is a great place, I’ve found, to start.

Constantly Sick? You Might Be Missing This Mineral

Better Report
Health | Updated: February 12, 2026
Better Report

If it feels like you’re always sick, your immune system may be more stressed than you realize. A constant sniffle, sore throat, or run-down feeling isn’t just inconvenient. Over time, these symptoms can become normal, but they’re often a sign that your body isn’t getting everything it needs to stay resilient and fight back the way it should.

One key mineral that’s often overlooked? Zinc. While vitamin C is commonly associated with immunity, a comprehensive review of different micronutrients found that while most vitamins didn’t significantly prevent colds or reduce symptom severity, zinc actually made folks feel better faster.

On average, people who took zinc shortened their colds by about 2.25 days. That may not sound like much, but, given most colds last seven days, cutting a few days off every cold can make a meaningful difference over the course of a year, especially if you’re someone who seems to catch everything. And zinc can play a role in preventing illness, too, by helping your thymus, a small but critical gland, produce and train the immune cells your body relies on to fight infections.

Needed. Immune Support Immunity Powder

BUY FOR $60 AT AMAZON

That’s why replenishing your zinc matters — even if the supplements are unsavory and astringent. Thankfully, there’s a powdered alternative that lets you replenish your supply no matter whether you’re at home or on the road. (The powder can successfully bypass TSA screenings.)

The Needed Immune Support Powder is an easy-to-mix, surprisingly delicious daily powder made with bioavailable zinc and other immune-supporting nutrients to help address common nutrient gaps. Instead of guessing whether you’re getting enough zinc, it offers a convenient way to support your body’s natural defenses without the metallic aftertaste. Elderberry is a slightly tart, slightly sweet fruit that’s reminiscent of other berries: blackberry, especially. This mix features monk fruit for added sweetness, though, so the tartness is not too overpowering. A serving size is two scoops, and there are 30 servings per container, which means there’s more than enough to go around when the entire house is sick, several times over

Science Says This Is the Healthiest Way to Wake Up

Better Report

Better Report

Mornings are stressful as it is, and noisy, fight-or-flight-activating alarm clocks — especially ones that sound like this — definitely don’t diffuse the stress. That’s why some folks, at least those whose schedules allow for it, choose to wake up with the sun, easing into the day without the stress response triggered by an alarm inserting itself into your day at full volume.

For those of us who are tied to earlier shifts, attend regular events, or care for children or animals, an alarm is unfortunately essential. It’s what, even if you have trouble sleeping past six or seven in the morning, ensures we get out of bed and get going. That said, those of us used to the sound our alarms make grow numb to how they make us feel — and what they might be doing to our nervous systems.

A 2024 study conducted by University of Virginia doctoral research student Yeonsu Kim “showed that the morning blood pressure surge when forced to wake up by an alarm was significantly greater than when waking up naturally.” In simpler terms, abrupt alarm sounds cause blood pressure to spike, trigger a “fight or flight” response, raise cortisol levels, and contribute to higher anxiety levels throughout the day.

An Australian study from 2020 found that more melodic alarm sounds improved alertness (less sleep inertia) after waking while reducing stress, both at the time of waking and later in the day. “Sleep inertia,” it read, “is a potentially dangerous reduction in human alertness and occurs 0–4 hours after waking. The type of sound people set as their alarm for waking has been shown to reduce the effects of sleep inertia… [and] a sound which is ranked as melodic by participants shows a significant relationship to reports of reductions in perceived sleep inertia.”

Are the Tiny Red Dots on Your Skin Dangerous?

Thankfully, there’s a product that blends both approaches: the Hatch Restore 3. To wake you, it slowly illuminates your room, mimicking the sun. Once fully lit, a melodic alarm tone of your choosing guides you into your day. It still triggers the release of cortisol, but not to stress-inducing levels: “By gently waking you up with light instead of sound, the sunrise alarm mimics a natural dawn, moving from red to orange to white before your chosen alarm sound plays. This gradual exposure to light prompts your brain to release cortisol, the hormone that cues your body to wake naturally and gently,” the box reads.

The light within typically begins to brighten 15 to 60 minutes before the scheduled wake-up time, depending on your user settings, going from a darker red to a bright white, as explained above, and your chosen alarm gradually gets louder, albeit on a shorter timeline. If you snooze the alarm (as most of us do), the tone stops, but the light stays on, acting as a gentle reminder that it’s time to get out of bed.

When you buy a Restore, it includes the device, its power cord, and a quick-start guide. You need a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection to use it and access to an iOS or Android device to download the accompanying app, which lets you register the device, set your alarm time, choose your tune, and play wind-down tracks, sleep podcasts, or stories. Your original purchase includes a free 30-day trial of the annual plan, which renews at $49.99/year after those 30 days.

How to Never Lose Your Keys (or the Remote) Ever Again

No matter how careful we strive to be, we eventually lose things, even for brief moments: our keys, the remote, our wallets, headphones, you name it. The panic that sets in when something isn’t exactly where we thought we left it is unmatched — enough to send our heart rate into overdrive and put our “find it now” senses on high alert. And, sometimes, we do find what we temporarily lost, eliminating the hassle of calling to cancel credit cards, taking the bus or phoning a friend for a ride home, asking someone else to read us the dinner menu, or watching what’s on the TV already instead of flicking through for something better. There is, however, a way to never lose your keys, glasses, remote, or anything else for that matter, ever again — by using one of Tile’s handy short-range trackers.

Prices are accurate as of January 27, 2026. Subject to change. All featured products and deals are selected independently and objectively by the author. Better Report may receive a share of sales via affiliate links in content.

Tile Mate Essentials 4-Pack

Bundle Tile’s most popular trackers and save a sizable chunk of dough. For the price of three, you get Tile’s Slim card tracker, two Tile Mates (the keyring trackers), and one Tile Sticker, which isn’t completely flush (or even all that small), but you can still stick it on items like a remote without it being completely obvious.

BUY FOR $60 AT AMAZON
Advertisement

How Tile Trackers Work

Available in several sizes designed to attach to keys, be stowed in your wallet like any other card, strung on a backpack, or stuck onto a remote or inside a glasses case, the trackers work by using Bluetooth technology to connect with the Tile app downloaded to your phone, meaning it’s best saved for items you know are within a certain range (typically 100 to 400 feet). That’s perfect, though, for the items you know are there but cannot find, which, truthfully, is most things most of the time.

Within the app you can track your Tiles on a map or view them individually on your personalized homepage. There, you can click on each item and “Find” it, which triggers a 15-second chime, set up smart alerts for whenever you leave an item behind, enroll in Tile’s item reimbursement program (which gives you a new Tile and money towards the lost item), and change the ringtone your Tile plays and the name of the item in your app.

We had no trouble connecting to items even two or three floors away from the item, and the ringtone — we chose Bionic Birdie — is more than loud (and objectively annoying) enough to lead you to the lost item.

Courtesy of Evan Malachosky

What to Track With Tile Trackers

That said, Tile’s trackers do not use a GPS signal to locate items, meaning you cannot track a set of keys in real time if someone stole them. You do, however, have access to their last known location with you, which is wherever your phone and the tracker itself last made a connection. This is why we feel it isn’t necessarily the best use of a tracker to keep one attached to your luggage, which will inevitably lose its connection with your phone once it’s checked by a gate attendant and loaded into the cabin of the plane.

Instead, Tile trackers are perfect for smaller, typically home-bound items like your wallet, keys, glasses case, TV remote, headphones, checkbook, or tablet (if it can’t already be tracked on your phone). This isn’t to say Tile doesn’t have any use outside the home, but we found the trackers to be most useful when we needed to sound an alarm to locate an item that’s probably nearby — the same way you have someone else call your phone to help you track it audibly.

Scents can take you somewhere else — to the past or to another place. Maybe it’s the aroma of fresh-baked cookies conjuring your childhood, or a familiar perfume recalling a lost love. Unlike other senses, our sense of smell has a direct line to the part of the brain that controls emotions and memory. When you inhale a scent, it sends signals to your limbic system, triggering the release of feel-good hormones like serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins. It’s why certain scents can help you feel calmer, more focused, or even more energized, sometimes almost instantly.

That’s the foundation of aromatherapy. It can feel more spiritual, but biology plays a major role. Essential oils release tiny molecules into the air that interact with your nervous system, influencing your mood, balancing stress levels, and offering a sense of stability. Rather than being a passive background detail, scent becomes an intentional part of how you support your mental and emotional state throughout the day. Each essential oil interacts with the limbic system in a slightly different way, which is why certain scents are associated with different mood-boosting outcomes.

The Most Popular Aromatherapy Scents

Lavender is widely used for its calming, grounding properties and is a prominent part of popular evening routines and stress-supporting rituals thanks to its ability to promote relaxation and rest. Personally, lavender is my go-to at night, and I genuinely noticed more restful sleep once it became part of my evening routine. It’s subtle, but it makes a difference. Cinnamon is known for its warm, cozy aroma and is often used to create a comforting atmosphere while supporting mental stimulation and an uplifted mood. Citrus scents, like lemon or bergamot, are naturally bright and invigorating, and are commonly used to boost energy and focus, making them a good go-to for the mornings or moments when mental clarity dips. Neroli, valued for its soft floral notes, can foster emotional balance and promote calm in moments of restlessness or overwhelm.

Easy Ways to Start Aromatherapy on Your Own

If you’re curious about incorporating aromatherapy into your routine, I suggest keeping it simple. Using a diffuser during work hours, winding down with something calming at night, or even using scent in the car. (For me, living in Los Angeles means plenty of time stuck in traffic.) Sometimes wellness doesn’t have to mean adding more to your morning routine, adding stress to your day — just tuning into one sense you might’ve been overlooking. If you’re new to aromatherapy, starting with a diffuser makes it easy to incorporate scent into your routine with minimal effort.

Your Shoes Could Be Making Your Knee Pain Worse

When your shoes don’t fit, the signs are obvious: hot spots, blisters, pinching, or even claw toes from a tight toebox. Over time, though, even comfortable shoes can do damage. In most cases, this manifests as knee pain — both sharp, sudden waves of it and dull, unending discomfort. That said, it’s surprisingly easy to overlook how much a sneaker’s fit impacts the rest of your body — until your knees start aching.

With every step, your feet absorb downward force equal to several times your body weight, and when your shoe is out of alignment, lacks support, or doesn’t provide proper shock absorption, that stress doesn’t just transfer through you into the ground. It travels back up the chain, through the leg, and puts pressure on your knee. That means you should always buy shoes based on their ability to reduce the pressure put on your knees, especially if they already feel achy or creaky. That said, even good, supportive shoes can wear out, and sometimes unevenly, depending on your gait (your pattern of movement).

“Appropriate footwear is important for knee pain because footwear characteristics directly influence the mechanical loads placed on the knee joint, which can either exacerbate or alleviate symptoms,” Michael Fishkin, a Certified Pedorthist at Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists, said. “Shock-absorbing midsoles represent another beneficial design feature.”

A smart way to shop for supportive shoes that won’t cause knee pain is to look for sneakers that have earned the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) seal of approval. Awarded only to products deemed good for foot health, the seal has been granted to manufacturers since 1967. As of January 2026, there are just over 1,600 sneakers and slides with this designation. A cult-favorite from this exclusive club? HOKA ONE ONE’s Bondi 9, a wide-based sneaker with a double-stacked outsole designed to last longer and wear evenly, and a moderate heel-to-toe drop that won’t cause joint pain flare-ups. Available in a variety of colors, they’ve grown in popularity partly because of their looks — they’re a hit with those committed to getting their 10,000 steps each day (and documenting the task on social media) — but they’re pedorthist-approved, too.

Hoka Women’s Bondi 9 (Stardust)

BUY FOR $175 AT ZAPPOS

“The Hoka Bondi 9 possesses design characteristics that align with footwear features shown to benefit individuals with knee pain,” Fishkin added. “Specifically, it features maximal cushioning and shock absorption, which are properties demonstrated to reduce knee pain… The Bondi 9 also has a relatively flat profile with minimal heel-to-toe drop and a flexible construction, characteristics associated with lower knee joint loading.”

5 Ways to Avoid Eating and Drinking Microplastics

In today’s environment, microplastics (small pieces of plastic, less than 5 mm (0.2 inch) in length) are largely inevitable — we are exposed to them, we consume them, and we live with them inside us. It’s a sad fact of modern life. A 2019 study went so far as to say that we consume a credit card’s worth of plastic each week through the foods we eat, the drinks we drink, and the things we touch and interact with. There have been studies since that potentially disprove this assessment, stating that the real quantity is far less, albeit still troubling. That said, we’re not yet able to track the amount within us at an individual level and can only estimate based on the expected, or average, daily consumption.

Even so, it’s still smart to limit your exposure (and consumption) as much as possible. But how? Microplastics, hence the name, aren’t visible to the naked eye and accumulate within us gradually, through repeated tiny doses. According to Harvard Medicine, they’re everywhere: “We encounter microplastics everywhere: from trash, dust, fabrics, cosmetics, cleaning products, rain, seafood, produce, table salt, and more,” their entry on the topic reads. “[It’s] little wonder that microplastics have been detected throughout the human body, including in the blood, saliva, liver, kidneys, and placenta.”

The most common-sense way to reduce your exposure to (and subsequent consumption of) microplastics is to trade a few of the plastic-based products around your house (and in your bag) for glass, metal, or plastic-free alternatives. Find a few of our favorites below.

Klean Kanteen Rise Reflect

BUY FOR $40 AT AMAZON

This stainless-steel bottle skips plastic entirely so your drinks never touch microplastic-shedding surfaces, making it easy to stay hydrated in a cleaner and safer way. It uses recycled steel and bamboo instead of hidden plastic parts that can degrade and flake over time. Choosing this over single-use plastic bottles means fewer tiny plastic particles in your mouth and a lower overall plastic footprint.

Umigy Stainless Steel Food Containers

BUY FOR $30 AT AMAZON

Storing meals in stainless steel reduces your exposure to microplastics and toxic additives that can be released from plastic containers when heated or scratched. These durable metal containers keep food fresh without the chemical leeching that comes from traditional plastic boxes. Just be sure to transfer your food into a non-plastic bowl, plate, or container before microwaving.

FSC-certified birch wood gives you a natural, plastic-free feel for all of your recipe-making. They’re a subtle but solid swap that keeps your kitchen healthier and cleaner and your wallet happier, assuming that these last longer than their plastic counterparts. (They can be easily cleaned by boiling them.)

Caraway Nonstick Ceramic Frying Pan

BUY FOR $125 AT AMAZON

Caraway’s ceramic-coated pan delivers easy nonstick cooking without Teflon or plastic-derived coatings that can degrade into microplastics and PFAS. Its mineral-based surface holds up under heat, keeping food in contact with ceramic instead of synthetic materials. The result is cleaner cooking and fewer unwanted plastic traces making their way onto your plate — and into your body.

The Most Popular New Year’s Resolutions for 2026

Ali Eldridge
Health | Updated: December 22, 2025
Better Report

Every year, as the next one draws near, we collectively commit to some change. We pin the transformation to the following year, anxiously await its approach, and vow to start it anew. This annual tradition has a name — and its fair share of doubters. Dubbed New Year’s Resolutions, the practice dates back to Babylonian times, albeit under a different name.

According to Britannica, “Babylonian kings offered resolutions in the form of a ‘negative confession’ — a list of sins one has not committed that can serve as a pledge to continue avoiding those sins; the kings would kneel and recite these confessions as part of a rite of humiliation and purification during the spring festival of Akitu.”

Sure, their timing differed from ours, but understandably so: From 380 BCE, the beginning of the year was marked by the start of spring, not the flipping from December to January. In this case, the tradition hasn’t changed much, even since antiquity. Every year, it seems, we commit ourselves to similar goals — some that have sustained since ye olde times; others that have evolved with the times. These are the most popular New Year’s Resolutions Americans vow to uphold but often (not always) fail to keep past “Quitter’s Day,” the second Friday in January.

The Most Popular New Year’s Resolutions, According to Pew Research Center

According to a January 2024 Pew Research Center study, these were the most common resolutions.

Are the Tiny Red Dots on Your Skin Dangerous?

Improving My Health, Changing My Diet, or Exercising More

79% of respondents were concerned about their health and vowed to improve it in the year that followed. This is a recurring trend that triggers annual deals on gym memberships, meal plans, and personal trainers.

Saving More Money or Improving My Financial Situation

61% wanted to save more money (or spend less). Rising costs and economic uncertainty tend to keep these concerns at the forefront of respondents’ (and most other Americans’) minds.

Improving My Relationship With Family or Making New Friends

57% wanted to get closer to their families or find more like-minded friends. It makes sense that the pandemic’s lingering impact has evoked a desire for deeper connections after years of social strain and isolation.

Finding a New Hobby or Investing More Time in Personal Interests

55% thought they spent too much time focusing on fruitless pursuits and wanted to dedicate more time to their passions. This resolution often reflects a push for better work-life balance and personal joy.

Getting a New Job

49% wanted to switch jobs — or just quit theirs. As layoffs loom, unemployment rises and sinks, the search for better pay and more flexibility makes sense.

Something Else

Of those surveyed, 42% put something else as their top priority. Their goals ranged widely, underscoring how personal and varied (and difficult) resolution-setting can be.
