Oh, silica packets. What are we going to do with you? Silica packets, those little bags we find packaged next to everything from beef jerky to flat-screen televisions, are one of the mysteries of modern life. Ostensibly used to prevent moisture build-up, these little silica gel sachets usually get thrown away quickly. But next time, take a moment and think of all the possibilities those little humidity-suckers can have on your day-to-day life. From preserving old photos to saving your iPhone from a disaster, here are seven ways silica gel packets can improve your life in small ways you never thought of before.

Preserving Photos and Documents

Old photographs and important documents hold sentimental value, but they’re also susceptible to damage from moisture. Safeguard these treasures by placing silica packets in the containers where you store them. The silica will absorb excess moisture, helping to prevent yellowing, warping, and deterioration over time.

Extending Razor Blade Life

Tired of replacing razor blades frequently due to premature dulling? Combat rust and corrosion by storing your razor in a container with silica packets. The silica gel absorbs moisture in the bathroom environment, significantly extending the sharpness and longevity of your razor blades. Moreover, regularly drying your razor blade after each use can further prolong its lifespan.

Preventing Foggy Car Windows

Foggy car windows can impair visibility and pose a safety risk, especially during inclement weather. Keep silica packets in your car to combat moisture buildup. Place them strategically under car seats or on the dashboard to help prevent fogging, ensuring clear visibility for safer driving.

Reviving Wet Electronics

Accidentally dropping your smartphone or other electronic devices in water can induce panic. While silica packets won’t perform miracles, they can aid in the drying process. After removing the device from the water, place it in a sealed container with several silica packets. The silica will absorb moisture, helping expedite drying and potentially salvaging your device when a bowl of rice isn’t enough.

Preventing Silver Tarnish

Silver jewelry and cutlery can lose their luster over time due to tarnishing caused by exposure to air and moisture. Preserve the shine of your silver items by storing them with silica packets. The silica gel absorbs moisture from the air, slowing the tarnishing process and keeping your silver looking as good as new.

Protecting Leather Goods

Leather shoes, belts, and handbags are investments that deserve proper care. Combat mold and mildew growth by placing silica packets inside your leather items when storing them. The silica absorbs excess moisture, preventing mold and mildew from taking hold and extending the lifespan of your favorite leather pieces.

Preventing Musty Odors in Luggage

Storing luggage in damp environments or packing away clothes without proper drying can result in musty odors. Keep your luggage smelling fresh by placing silica packets inside before storing them. The silica will absorb any residual moisture, preventing the growth of mold and mildew that causes an unpleasant odor that can easily absorb into your clothing on vacation.

What Does Decaffeinated Really Mean?

Jessica Levy
Health | Updated: May 31, 2024
Coffee pouring into a white mug
Better Report

Drinking caffeine right before bed is a surefire way to keep yourself from drifting off. At that point you’ve got nothing better to do than stare at the ceiling and lament all of those embarrassing fashion choices you made in high school. Not fun. That’s why so many people switch to decaffeinated beverages late in the day. But even if you’ve been drinking decaf coffee for years, you may be surprised to learn that “decaffeinated” doesn’t mean caffeine-free. Those two concepts are entirely different, as decaffeinated beverages undergo a special process that removes some — but not all — of their caffeine.

Credit: JSB Co./ Unsplash+

What Does Decaf Mean?

Decaffeination is a term for the scientific process that strips naturally occurring caffeine out of coffee beans and tea leaves. However, decaffeination isn’t 100% effective, as it only removes only around 97% of caffeine particles. So while the average cup of regular coffee may contain anywhere from 70 to 140 mg of caffeine, an equal-size cup of decaf will still contain roughly 3 mg of caffeine. This amount is effectively negligible, especially by comparison, though it’s still useful to be aware of the fact that decaffeinated beverages contain trace amounts of caffeine.

How Are Drinks Decaffeinated?

There are several common decaffeination methods used by coffee and tea manufacturers that utilize chemical solvents such as ethyl acetate and methylene chloride to strip beans and tea leaves of their caffeine. Let’s focus on coffee beans to describe these methods.

The Direct Method — In this method, the beans themselves come into direct physical contact with the chemical solvent. Essentially, the beans are steamed and then repeatedly rinsed in the solvent to remove as much caffeine as possible.

The Indirect Method — For this method, the solvent never actually comes into contact with the beans. Instead, beans are soaked in water for hours to extract their flavor and caffeine. The beans are removed before a solvent is added to the flavorful water to help remove any caffeine particles. Finally, the water is reintroduced to the beans, which reabsorb their flavors and oils now that the caffeine has been removed.

The Swiss Water Process — This decaffeination method begins by placing the beans in hot water to extract their flavor, before throwing out that initial batch of beans. The water is then passed through a carbon filter that removes caffeine particles. Lastly, the mixture is used to filter a new batch of beans which extracts the caffeine without exposing the beans to any chemical agents.

The Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Method — After soaking beans in water for several hours, the beans are exposed to a combination of carbon dioxide, heat, and pressure. This causes the carbon dioxide to react in a way that it creeps into the crevices of the beans and dissolves the caffeine particles inside.

Is Decaf Safe?

No matter which process is used to decaffeinate beverages, you can rest easy knowing there are strict regulations in place to ensure that all chemical components are washed away. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration mandates that decaffeinated ingredients be washed, steamed, and/or roasted to evaporate any remaining chemical solvents. This makes every decaf drink perfectly safe for consumption.

Credit: Karl Fredrickson/ Unsplash

Why Drink Decaf?

Drinking decaf is a great way to limit your caffeine intake while still enjoying a cup of your favorite beverage. The FDA recommends that healthy adults drink no more than 400 mg of caffeine daily. If you find yourself getting close to that number, switch to decaf instead, allowing you to still enjoy the flavor without any potential health risks.

Credit: Devin Avery/ Unsplash

The Difference Between Decaf and Caffeine-Free

So what’s the difference between decaffeinated and caffeine-free drinks anyway? Well, caffeine-free means there was never any caffeine to begin with, and so the drink didn’t have to undergo any sort of decaffeination process. If you notice a can of caffeine-free Coca-Cola, then the manufacturer simply never added caffeine during the production process, so there was no need to remove it.

It’s 2024, But You Should Still Have a George Foreman Grill

The fact that a world champion boxer is best known for a countertop grill is a remarkable feat. In the late ‘90s and early aughts, you couldn’t step into a kitchen without spotting a pearly white George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine on the counter. The once-ubiquitous device became famous thanks to its convenience and ability to drain fat from the patties you cooked on its slanted surface in mere minutes. It was simple and effective — and still is. Though the heyday of the grill has long since passed, it’s still an affordable and versatile piece of cooking equipment for your kitchen. Here’s why.

Credit: Anthony Harvey / Getty Images Entertainment via Getty Images

The History of the Grill

To answer your question, no, George Foreman did not invent the Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine. We can only dream. Michael Boehm, an inventor from Illinois, conceived the device to cook both sides of a piece of meat and remove fat in the process. Originally dubbed “The Fajita Express”— a wonderful name in its own right — the product was supposedly pitched to another athlete first: Hulk Hogan. The Hulkster and his 24-inch pythons declined the opportunity if the story is to be believed. After shopping the grill around, Salton, Inc., the company that produced the grill, sent a prototype to Foreman’s people. And the rest, as they say, is history.

The Grill’s Legacy

In the 15 years after its release in 1994, the George Foreman Grill sold more than 100 million units, skyrocketing to success and giving plenty of hungry customers a reasonable way to grill burgers and dogs during the winter months and when time was of the essence. At the height of its popularity, the grill padded Foreman’s pockets to the tune of $4.5 million per month, easily eclipsing his boxing purses. Part of the grill’s appeal was its ease of use. You simply plugged it in, popped on a few patties, and waited less than five minutes for them to finish cooking. Coming of age during a time of prepackaged snacks and dinners made the device a powerful tool for busy parents and college kids alike. And it was relatively inexpensive (less than $30). It’s hard to compete with cheap, easy, and healthy.

Why You Should Still Own a George Foreman Grill

It may surprise you that the George Foreman Grill is still in production. Not only that, but while the world moved on from the grill, Spectrum Brands, the current owner, kept quietly improving its range, introducing advanced options, outdoor grills, and higher-quality materials. The results are a variety of George Foreman Grills similar to the one you remember, but so much better.

Today’s grills come in various finishes, including an eye-catching red that will announce to all your guests that you’re back on the George Foreman train. The cooking surfaces are now dishwasher safe, so you no longer have to scrub away caked-on bits. There are also smokeless options if you use your grill near a sensitive smoke detector. Many options heat faster these days, too, offering up to 30% quicker preheat on some models, so you can plug them in and enjoy your meal even faster than you remember.

But at its core, this is the George Foreman Grill you know and love. Every option sears both sides of your food simultaneously. Almost all options retain the floating hinge, which allows for variable height, meaning you can squish paninis and accommodate thick chicken breasts and dense burgers. Many of the newer George Foreman Grills also offer more space, allowing you to handle dinner for a family of five in one go.

What I love about the George Foreman Grill remains — it’s a convenient and effective meal preparation. My wife and I both work, and evenings are when we head off to the gym, so plenty of days require simplicity when it comes to dinner — either that or we’re eating at 9:30 p.m., which is less than ideal and causes plenty of sleep issues. The George Foreman Grill remains the most versatile tool for navigating packed schedules. I regularly marinate thin chicken breasts and toss them on the grill to pair with some pan-roasted veggies. Some nights, I’ll toss on frozen shrimp or burgers. When I feel particularly spent, I turn to simple paninis and let the grill handle those. There’s even a George Foreman Grill cookbook from back in the day you can still buy if your imagination isn’t spitting out fresh ideas, and I’ve worked my way through more than half of the 100 recipes it includes. If that doesn’t suffice, plenty of home chefs have also penned cookbooks that revolve around the use of the grill, so extending yourself beyond burgers shouldn’t be an issue.

Want the closest modern George Foreman Grill to the one you remember from the ‘90s? Then, the GR10B is the model for you. This version gives you space for two patties, boasts a nonstick coating, and helps remove up to 42% of the fat in your burger. Without any added bells or whistles, the GR10B is just like the device you used to have, but now it comes in a sleek, all-black colorway. At less than $30, it remains a remarkably affordable kitchen appliance.

If you’re willing to shell out a bit more for added convenience, consider the George Foreman Fully Submersible Grill. As the name suggests, the entire grill is dishwasher safe, so clean-up is as simple as possible. At $52, the grill isn’t wildly more expensive than the GR10B, and the added durability, faster preheat, and larger size (you can fit up to four servings on the Fully Submersible Grill) make it the best value.

Want top-of-the-line? Consider the most advanced and premium option in the catalog: the GRBV5130CUX. This model has a broil function when the top cooking surface is removed to reveal an infrared heating unit. It comes in six colors and is the most eye-catching George Foreman Grill in the range. You can adjust the temperature to allow your George Foreman Grill to replace your toaster oven. It’s unlike the grills of yore, but it’s perfect for those looking for more versatility and power.

Do Store-Bought Strawberries Really Have Bugs in Them?

Jessica Levy
Health | Updated: May 31, 2024

Better Report

Fresh fruits and veggies are a tasty part of a well-balanced diet, but one produce pitfall has consumers seriously grossed out: bugs. A viral TikTok video highlighted this issue in a batch of fresh strawberries. As the user soaked their berries in salt water, a horrifying scene occurred: tiny bugs crawled out of them! Fortunately (or, erm, unfortunately), this is normal.

Whether you hand-picked them from your garden or bought them prepackaged at the grocery store, your berries are the perfect home for creepy critters, but here’s why that could be a good thing. The presence of bugs means that the farmer didn’t overdo it with harsh chemical fertilizers, and the bugs are also a natural part of a healthy ecosystem. But that doesn’t mean we have to enjoy eating insects. Learn how to banish bugs from your berries while preserving the taste and quality of your food.

The Terrible Truth: We Eat Bugs All the Time

We eat lots of bugs. According to the University of California Riverside, the average American will consume around two pounds of dead insects and insect parts annually. Even the Food and Drug Administration has allowable insect parts in certain foods. Berries are actually the least of our worries. The most common foods insects hide in include vegetables, rice, beer, pasta, spinach, and broccoli. However, eating them doesn’t harm us, even if it sounds unappetizing. In some parts of the world, such as tropical areas of Asia, bugs are harvested and eaten as a vital source of protein.

The wormy bugs seen in the viral TikTok video are a type of fly maggot called spotted wing drosophila (SWD) that commonly infests berries. They sometimes go unnoticed because they live on the inside of the fruit. Other bugs often found in strawberries include aphids, armyworms, and mites, to name a few. Rest assured, it won’t harm you if you accidentally ingest any bugs, even if it seems gross. “In fact, if you accidentally consumed some maggots, all you did was get some extra animal protein in your salad or fruit shake,” explains crop entomologist Sriyanka Lahiri, PhD.

Farmers work to reduce bugs and monitor plants by getting rid of rotten fruit and picking ripened fruit on time, but there is only so much they can do. The only surefire way of completely eliminating bugs from berries would be to use excessive amounts of pesticides, “which is neither environmentally friendly nor beneficial for human health,” according to Lahiri. Instead, cleaning berries yourself at home is likely the most effective method to remove pests.

How to Get Rid of Bugs in Produce

If the thought of consuming a worm or some aphids with your berries doesn’t sit well with you, don’t worry. There are safe and effective ways to banish berry bugs in no time.

Credit: EllenMoran/ iStock

Method 1: Rinse

This is the easiest and fastest method for cleaning produce. Hopefully, you’re already doing this, but essentially you place your berries in a colander in the sink and wash with cold water. Rub the berries individually with your hands while under running water. This removes debris, dirt, and any bugs on the surface. Pat dry and discard any rotten berries.

Method 2: Submerge

A more effective cleaning method is to fully submerge berries into a bowl of cold water after rinsing them. This might force bugs out of the interior. You can also add the following food-safe cleaning agents to the soak for an extra boost.

Vinegar: Add four parts water, one part white vinegar to your berries and soak for 20 minutes. According to Master Class, this is the most effective cleaning method for strawberries sprayed with pesticides. Rinse the berries in cold water and dry them.

Saltwater: The viral TikTok video that inspired the strawberry bug madness used a saltwater soak. Mix one teaspoon of salt for every cup of warm water and let the berries soak until the water is cold. Rinse in cold water and dry. This is one of the best ways to remove fruit fly larvae.

Baking soda: This pantry staple can also force bugs out of your berries. Add one teaspoon to every four cups of water and soak for at least five minutes. Rinse in cold water and dry.

Tip: Store Berries Like a Pro

After washing your berries, it’s vital to dry them thoroughly if you aren’t eating them right away, or they’ll spoil very quickly. Pat them dry, then use a salad spinner to dry them the rest of the way. Opt for a ventilated berry bowl, such as the OXO Good Grips storage container. The BPA-free plastic container features an elevated colander to promote airflow and a carbon filter to slow spoilage.

Your $2 Bills Could Be Worth Thousands

Wealth | Updated: May 7, 2024

Getting your hands on a $2 bill might be exciting at first, but $2 bills are the unappreciated and awkward little sibling of the currency set. While most of these Thomas Jefferson-clad greenbacks are worth exactly $2 (over 204 million were produced in 2022 alone), some rare variants can be worth thousands on the auction market. So, next time you think about using your $2 bill to buy a soda, give it a once-over — your $2 bill could be worth much more.

Credit: madisonwi/ iStock

How to Determine if Your $2 Bill Is Valuable

There are several characteristics to look for when figuring out if a $2 bill is valuable. First, note the condition — crumbled or torn money is far less valuable than flat bills devoid of creases. Then, look for the seal. If it’s red, blue, or brown, you know your $2 bill was minted before 1976, making it less likely to be mass-produced. Bills with a red seal and a silver certificate are considered the most valuable option, but blue and brown are also rare. Finally, check and see whose portrait is on the bill. Anyone besides Thomas Jefferson almost guarantees extra value.

The serial number may also elevate the value of a $2 bill, as interested buyers always look for unique number combinations. For example, if your $2 bill has the serial number 88888888 or 00000001, then that’s going to be worth a lot more. Websites like the Fancy Serial Number Checker help determine the rarity and possible value if you’re curious to investigate further.

Valuable $2 Bills From the 1800s

The first $2 bill was issued in 1862 with a portrait of the country’s first secretary of the treasury, Alexander Hamilton. (Yes, he was a big deal even before the musical.) According to the U.S. Currency Auctions, uncirculated $2 bills from that inaugural year are worth more than $2,800 to the right collector, while circulated versions are valued between $500 and $1,000, depending on condition.

In 1869, the $2 bill was redesigned to feature America’s third President, Thomas Jefferson. This version is very valuable among collectors, with uncirculated $2 bills from 1869 worth more than $3,800.

The most valuable $2 bill minted from the 1800s is the 1890 variant, which features Civil War General James McPherson. This bill is technically a Treasury note (a short-lived concept from 1890 to 1893), which makes the note valuable due to its scarcity. Circulated copies of this 1890 bill range between $500 and $2,500, while uncirculated ones sell for over $4,500.

Valuable $2 Bills From the 1900s

Most $2 bills printed throughout the 1900s are unsurprisingly less valuable than their 1800s counterparts. However, many are still worth more than $2. The most valuable $2 bill minted in the 1900s is an uncirculated version with a blue seal from 1918 worth over $1,000. The same can be said for an uncirculated bill with a red seal from the 1928B series, valued at over $1,000. However, prices of $2 bills minted after 1928 dip dramatically, with most only worth $2.50 to $25.

Valuable BEP Limited Edition Sets

While most $2 bills minted in the ‘90s aren’t particularly valuable, there’s one notable exception. In 1995, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing released a series of limited edition sets containing $2 bills from each of the 12 Federal Reserve Districts.
