5 Things You Should Never Buy During Labor Day Sales (and What To Get Instead)

Labor Day is right around the corner, and so is one of the biggest end-of-summer shopping events. But before you whip out your credit card, you should know that not every discount is worthy of your consideration. We talked with Chris Ribeiro, founder of the market research and consulting agency Starlight Analytics, and shopping expert Trae Bodge for their insights on what to skip during Labor Day sales — and what you should get instead.

Labor Day Sales To Skip

Tech Deals

Both Ribeiro and Bodge suggest that you avoid purchasing technology such as smartphones and TVs over Labor Day. It may be tempting to pick up a new Apple iPhone if you see a deal, but remember: The new iPhone is announced most often after Labor Day, and then retailers will usually mark down prices for older models. According to Ribeiro — who worked for years on the brand side at retail companies — sales at this time of year are usually “retailers just clearing floor space, but not giving you a good deal.” Overall, tech deals are much better later on in the year, during the holiday season, so you should hold off on purchasing until then if you can (with one exception, which we’ll get to below).

Toys and Holiday Gear

Though it may be tempting to get a head start on holiday shopping for the grandkids, you also shouldn’t get anything toy-related right now. “Toys tend to be on sale over Black Friday/Cyber Monday,” Bodge says, and if you can wait, “prices are often even better in December.”

The same goes for winter and holiday-related items — prices will be much lower around Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Skip any holiday gift sets you may see popping up, too. There won’t be a ton of variety, as it’s a bit too early, so you should instead “wait until later in the season to see what’s available and for the best prices,” Bodge says.

Fall and Winter Apparel

Apparel is another category to avoid. “Fall apparel will go on sale in late fall, so while you might be tempted to pick up a few pieces now, you’ll be paying close to full price,” Bodge explains. “If you need cold-weather apparel, you’ll start to see discounts over Black Friday/Cyber Monday, and the discounts will deepen in December.”

Labor Day Deals To Get Instead

According to Bodge, Labor Day is a good time to shop for “small and large home appliances, mattresses, summer clearance, and lingering back-to-school deals.”

Ribeiro recommends scoping out what you think you may want to buy before sales kick off and taking a screenshot of the price. That way, you’ll “know if you are actually getting a deal or if the retailer just marked it up.” He also recommends checking the return window, as a lot of these items are “sold as final sale, and people wind up getting stuck with things over a moderate discount.”

Back-to-School Products

Whether you need a few extra supplies for a child who recently headed back to school or simply want some new notebooks and pens yourself, there are plenty of back-to-school deals on Labor Day, according to Bodge and Ribeiro.

You can save “on essentials for kids K-12 and college-aged students,” Bodge says. Savings “span a variety of categories, from school supplies to clothing … to home organization and cleaning products.”And while you shouldn’t make most tech purchases at this time, Bodge says Labor Day sales are a good time to get deals on back-to-school tech — specifically laptops.

You can take advantage of early savings on back-to-school supplies now at Amazon, Target, and Walmart, and on back-to-school laptops at Office Depot and Best Buy.

Summer Clearance

Summer items are another category Bodge and Ribeiro recommend picking up during Labor Day promotions. From poolside equipment and bathing suits to patio furniture and grills, you can find quite a few discounts at this time of year that will allow you to be prepared for next summer. Summer items go on sale because “retailers need to get rid of it before fall and winter inventory lands,” Ribeiro says.

Wayfair is already kicking off the outdoor savings, with deep discounts on things like patio tables and planters. Pottery Barn also has big discounts on high-quality outdoor furniture. Keep an eye on outdoor savings at Home Depot and Amazon for items for your backyard or patio.

Mattresses

Both Bodge and Ribeiro say that you can get great deals on mattresses at this time of year. “Labor Day tends to be a big mattress sale period in general, but you tend to see the more premium brands go deeper than usual during this time period,”  Ribeiro says.

Casper has up to 30% off mattresses at the moment, with up to 35% off if you decide to bundle your purchase. Sleep Number also has deals, including 30% off on bundles. And DreamCloud is running deals that could get you up to 66% off.

Small and Large Appliances

If you’re looking for appliances for your home, now is a great time to take advantage of savings. “New models are put out [in] early fall,” Ribeiro says, “so last year’s stock is getting marked down.” Appliances with the biggest discounts include “refrigerators, washers, and dryers,” Ribeiro notes, and according to Bodge, you can get great deals on small countertop appliances too.

Bodge recommends that homeowners “use this time to replace an appliance that’s on the fritz.” In particular, you “should look for bundle deals where you can save more the more you buy,” she says. “Homeowners should check with their power provider too, as there may be trade-in offers or statement credits for EnergyStar appliances.”

Home Depot is showing generous discounts on refrigerators, with savings of as much as 42%, and washer and dryer sets as much as 37% off. Lowe’s also has some great savings right now, with as much as $900 off certain selections of washers and dryers and $1,600 off on refrigerators. “Don’t forget to go directly to the brands you like,” Bodge says, “because they will be offering savings, too, especially bundle deals.”Meanwhile, Amazon has excellent discounts on small appliances, including items for the home and kitchen.

Knowing what you should buy now and where you should be patient can help you save big. And with those decisions made, you can focus on other important Labor Day matters — like throwing an epic barbecue or what you’re going to put on your hot dog.

If you’re one of Amazon Prime’s more than 200 million members worldwide, you probably paid the membership fee for fast, free shipping on millions of products or access to thousands of movies and TV shows. But if you’re using Prime only for shopping and binge-watching Reacher, you’re not getting the full value from that $139 annual fee. From groceries to prescriptions, here are 15 Amazon Prime perks you may be overlooking.

Prime Day and Lightning Deals

Prime members can score exclusive discounts year-round, but the biggest savings often come during Amazon’s major sales events, like Prime Day. Members also get early access to Lightning Deals — short-lived discounts on everything from electronics to apparel that can disappear within hours. Just remember: A deal isn’t always a bargain, so it’s worth doing a little comparison shopping before you click “buy.”

Grocery Deals and Delivery

Subscribers can save on their weekly grocery runs, too. At Amazon Fresh, Prime members get access to exclusive deals, up to 50% off select items, 10% off Amazon brands, special coupons, and same-day grocery delivery in eligible areas. Prime members who shop at Whole Foods Market can also take advantage of exclusive discounts on select items on Tuesdays and Fridays, extra savings on sale items when they scan the Whole Foods or Amazon app at checkout, and special online grocery deals throughout the year.

Grubhub Food Delivery

Craving a burger from your favorite local neighborhood pub? Prime members get a free Grubhub+ subscription, a perk that normally costs $10 a month. Benefits include $0 delivery fees on eligible orders, lower service fees, exclusive restaurant deals, and 5% credit back on qualifying pickup orders at more than 300,000 eateries nationwide.

Gas Savings

If you spend a lot of time on the road — or even if you don’t — your membership can help you save at the pump, which is a worthwhile perk these days. By linking your Amazon Prime account to the free Earnify rewards app, you can get 10 cents off per gallon at thousands of participating BP, Amoco, and ampm gas stations across the U.S.

Prescription Deals

Prime members who pay out of pocket for common generic medications may be able to save with Amazon RxPass, a $5-per-month subscription that covers more than 50 eligible prescriptions. Because RxPass doesn’t accept insurance, it’s best suited for people without prescription drug coverage — or those whose insurance costs more than the flat monthly fee. Members can also use Amazon Pharmacy, the company’s full-service online pharmacy, to fill prescriptions with insurance or compare cash prices on eligible medications.

No-Rush Shipping Rewards

Same-day and overnight shipping may be one of Prime’s biggest selling points, but if you can wait a few extra days, you could get more than just your package. When Prime members select free no-rush shipping at checkout, they can receive a digital credit to use on eligible purchases like movies, e-books, digital games, and apps. Orders typically arrive within a week, and those credits can add up over time.

Amazon Day

Prime members can use Amazon Day to choose a preferred delivery day each week, allowing multiple orders to arrive together in fewer boxes. The free perk can make managing deliveries more convenient, especially when you’re away from home, and may help reduce packaging waste by combining shipments into a single delivery.

In-Garage Delivery

If you spend a lot of time away from home, or have concerns about your packages being stolen, Amazon Key’s in-garage delivery can add an extra layer of convenience and security. After a simple setup process, Prime members can choose in-garage delivery at checkout, allowing eligible packages and groceries to be placed safely inside their garage instead of left outside. (Keep in mind, though, that you’ll need a garage door that can be opened using a smart opener from the companies myQ, Chamberlain, Liftmaster, Aladdin Connect, and OHD Anywhere.)

Alexa+

Prime members get free access to an advanced version of Alexa+, Amazon’s upgraded AI-powered voice assistant — a savings of nearly $240 per year compared with the cost for nonmembers. Alexa+ is designed to offer more natural conversations, personalized recommendations, help with everyday tasks, and features like creating bedtime stories, all through simple voice commands.

Photo Storage

Pulling out old photo albums can be a hassle, but if you have Prime, there’s an easy way to have all of your precious memories at your fingertips. Prime members get unlimited full-resolution photo storage and 5GB of video storage through Amazon Photos, allowing you to back up, view, and share your memories from your phone, tablet, or computer. Your photos and videos are encrypted and accessible only to people you choose to share them with. Keep in mind that if you cancel Prime, you’ll need to upgrade to a paid storage plan or move your files elsewhere to keep storing your photos and videos.

Book lovers can get more from their Prime membership with free access to a selection of eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, comics, and more through Prime Reading on the Kindle app. Members can borrow titles from the collection, many with Audible Narration so they can switch between reading and listening. Prime members also get Amazon First Reads, which offers early access to a curated selection of new books each month, including one Kindle title available to download for free before its official release. How To Play Pickleball (Without Hurting Yourself)

Ali Eldridge
Health | Updated: June 18, 2026
About to serve during Pickleball game
Better Report

All featured products and deals are selected independently and objectively by the author. Better Report may receive a share of sales via affiliate links in content.

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the United States. The game was invented in the summer of 1965 by a group of neighbors who wanted to entertain their families, and there are now more than 24 million pickleball players (also known as picklers) nationwide, according to a recent report released by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA). The sport is popular across all ages, too: The average age of pickleball players is 35, and more than 15% of players are 65 and older. Not bad for a game cobbled together using Ping-Pong paddles, a Wiffle ball, and a badminton court.

“One of the reasons pickleball has exploded in popularity is that it’s relatively affordable and easy to get started,” says Laura Gainor, founder and CEO of the marketing and lifestyle platform Pickleball in the Sun. Pickleball also has a number of benefits, including improved hand-eye coordination and better heart health, as well as increased happiness and a sense of well-being. So, if you’re ready to become a pickler yourself — or simply want to level up your game — we’ve put together guidelines that will help you step onto the court with confidence.

Gear To Get Started

If you’re brand-new to the sport, getting the right gear is key. “The essentials are simple,” Gainor says. “A paddle, a few pickleballs, court shoes, and comfortable athletic apparel.”

Picking Your Paddle

According to Gainor, paddle technology has evolved a lot in recent years. She recommends going with a reputable brand that has options for players of all levels, such as JOOLA’s Vision Series, which provides “high-level performance at an accessible price point.” As you get more comfortable with the sport and your skills improve, you may want to consider premium options like the Pro V Series for “enhanced power, control, and feel.”

Gainor also likes Franklin Sports paddles, which are used by the No. 1 pickleball player in the world, Anna Leigh Waters. “Their products are also widely available at major retailers such as Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods, making them an easy entry point for new players,” she says.

Choosing the Pickleball

Gainor recommends the Franklin X-40 outdoor ball. “[It] remains one of the most popular and widely accepted balls in the sport,” she says, “making it a great choice for beginners looking to join games at their local courts.”

Wearing the Right Shoes

The right shoes won’t just provide support while you play — they’ll also help you avoid injuries (more on that later). “Court shoes provide the stability and support needed to help reduce the risk of rolled ankles, slips, and other common injuries,” Gainor explains. Her go-to shoes are Skechers Viper Pro Court shoes, which are available for both men and women.

Tips and Tricks for Leveling Up Your Pickleball Game

Here’s a simplified explanation of how pickleball works: You can play in singles or doubles, and while there are different strategies for each, the objective in both is to hit the ball over the net. Serves must be either underhand or drops, and there’s a two-bounce rule, meaning the serve needs to bounce, and the return must also bounce. After that, the rally continues until a player commits a fault — letting the ball bounce twice before hitting it, for example, or whacking a ball out of the air in the 14-foot area around the net, known as the non-volley zone or “the kitchen.” Only the team that serves can score points. The first team or player to reach 11 points with a two-point lead wins. When the game is done, it’s good sportsmanship to tap paddles with your opponent. (You can check out more in-depth rules for doubles play here and singles play here.)

Once you’ve mastered the basics, you may feel ready to improve your pickleball skills. Gainor says one of the best ways to level up is to play consistently. “There’s no substitute for time on the court,” she says. “I personally block off time on my calendar every morning to play … That regular court time has been one of the biggest contributors to improving my game over the years.”

She also encourages instruction. “Working with a certified instructor can help you develop proper technique, improve your strategy, and correct bad habits before they become ingrained,” she says. Online platforms like Pickleheads can help you find personal instructors for private lessons, or you can play at a private club such as Pickleball Kingdom. You may also find classes through your local community college.

If you only want to learn enough to have fun with the sport, that’s OK too. “Remember that improvement looks different for everyone,” Gainor says. “Some players want to compete at the highest levels, while others simply want to enjoy better matches with friends and family.” Whatever your goals are, she says, “Along the way, you’ll meet incredible people, discover new places to play, and become part of a welcoming community that makes the journey just as rewarding as the results.”

Finding Picklers To Play With

According to Gainor, in the early days of pickleball, finding places to play, and people to play with, was the biggest challenge. But as the sport has grown in popularity, that’s now one of the easiest parts of playing. There are more than 68,000 courts nationwide, according to Pickleheads. “Dedicated indoor and outdoor pickleball facilities have opened across the country, making it easier than ever to find courts and playing partners,” Gainor says.

If you want to play with others, Gainor suggests searching for local courts and checking their open-play schedule. Pickleheads has a large database of courts to help you find options near you. “Many local pickleball courts have a simple paddle-rack system where you can put your paddle up and rotate into games, making it easy to meet new people and start playing,” she says. You may need to pay fees or be a member to play, though, so do some research before heading out.

Avoiding Injuries as You Play

A 2025 study in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, which looked at pickleball injuries recorded in the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) between 2013 and 2022, showed that the majority of pickleball injuries — 61.1% — occur in players 65 to 80 years old, with 31.3% occurring in players ages 35 to 64. Falls caused the most injuries, the most common of which were fractures, followed by sprains.

So, as you plan to play, remember that one of the best ways to avoid injury is to wear the right shoes. “A common mistake new players make is stepping onto the court in running shoes,” Gainor says. “Running shoes are designed for forward movement, while pickleball requires quick lateral movements, sudden stops, and changes of direction.”

She also recommends concentrating on your footwork, because chasing down shots can leave you off balance. So, “rather than backpedaling aggressively, which can lead to falls and injuries, players should focus on using proper footwork techniques,” she says. They include “side-stepping, turning and running to the ball when appropriate, and maintaining good balance.”

Be wary of the shots you chase, too. “Being strategic about which balls to pursue and how you move to them can go a long way toward staying healthy on the court,” Gainor says.

Paying attention to any signs of fatigue before you play can also reduce your risk of injury. According to Gainor, “Many injuries happen late in matches when players become tired, and their footwork breaks down.”

Finally, if you’re playing during the hot-weather months, be sure to stay hydrated. “Pickleball can be deceptively demanding, especially during long sessions in the heat,” Gainor says. “Drink water before, during, and after play, and consider adding electrolytes when playing in high temperatures. Staying properly hydrated not only improves performance but can also help prevent cramps, dizziness, and heat-related illnesses.” These simple steps, Gainor says, “will help keep you on the court and enjoying the game for years to come.”

How To Become a Barbecue Master, According to a Pro

As summer heats up, outdoor gatherings with friends and neighbors become more common. If you’re making plans for a backyard barbecue and want to take your grill game to the next level, Matt Moore, author of several grilling books and host of the show Serial Griller, has some secrets, tips, and tricks he can share to help you become a true grill pro.

The Tools and Equipment You Need To Become a Barbecue Master

Moore takes a minimalist approach to grilling. “I believe one can cook and grill successfully without investing in too many bells and whistles, many of which ultimately create distractions,” he says. Still, he does recommend a few must-haves that will set you up for success.

Looftlighter

This charcoal starter “lets me quickly fire up my coals without getting my hands dirty,” Moore says. “It also allows me to apply heat to a distinct area,” which is especially helpful for a cooking technique known as the Minion method, where you light only a particular portion of the coals before you start grilling.

Stainless Steel Tongs

Moore recommends having one or two pairs of stainless steel tongs, such as the OXO outdoor grilling tongs. “Tongs perform an array of functions beyond just placing and controlling food,” he says. “They also allow you to move hot coals or grates.”

Non-Wire Grill Scraper

When it comes to grilling, cleanliness is key: Not only will it ensure you have safe, great-tasting food, but it also improves grill performance and means you’re less likely to have a flare-up or potential fire. Moore doesn’t use wire or bristle brushes, which can be dangerous if people accidentally ingest the bristles. Instead, he uses a non-wire grill scraper, like the ones by Brushtech. You can also keep it simple: “A crumpled up ball of aluminum foil can help break up any debris from the grates,” Moore says. He’ll also cut an onion, insert a fork into it, and rub it over the grates to clean them.

Instant Read Thermometer

A digital thermometer — like ThermoPop 2 — can become your best friend at the grill, according to Moore. “They are affordable, reliable, and help guide cooks on proper temperatures to ensure they nail the mark each and every time,” he says. “I often tell folks to use the thermometers as a fail-safe guide, but also to take notes and pay attention to the size of cuts, cooking times, fire temperatures, and the feel of the steak or meat, then cross-reference that against the thermometer reading. That way, if you find yourself helming the grill one day without a thermometer, you’ll have done enough ‘math problems’ to understand how to pull off a great meal without the aid of an additional tool.”

The Right Grill

“If you are a novice griller that craves consistency and performance, investing in a better grill [with] heavy-gauge construction, grates, and quality burners will provide that consistency more reliably,” Moore says. He recommends the Old Smokey grill for low-temperature barbecuing and hot-and-fast grilling. If you prefer electric grills, he recommends the Lumin Electric Grill by Weber.

Prepping the Grill: Using a Two-Zone Fire

Beyond equipment, managing the temperature of your grill will have the biggest impact on your results. “Understanding temperature control and ‘working with what you’ve got’ is what separates the pros from the rest,” Moore says.

Your actual prep work will depend on the grill itself and your fuel source, but Moore recommends setting up a two-zone fire. “Novice grillers too often use a single temperature across the entire grill — either too hot or too low — which causes frustration and poor results.”

• For a gas grill with more than one burner, set one knob to a higher temperature. “[This] allows you to sear on one side, and then move to less heat for temperature control,” Moore says. “If you only have one knob, move the food away from the heat source for indirect heating. This could be a horizontal offset, by moving the food away from the higher burner, or a vertical offset, moving food from the bottom grates to the top shelf or warming area.”

• If you’re using charcoal, hardwoods, or live fires, Moore suggests piling the coals “to create a direct heat zone and use vertical or horizontal separation to create another zone.” Then, you can “move food away from the direct heat.”

Handling the Grill While You Cook

To improve your grill technique, prepare in advance. “I often tell folks to walk through the process in their minds before they even light the grill,” Moore says. This is especially important “if you are cooking for a larger group than normal, or a smaller group.” Here’s what he recommends.

Prepare your ingredients.

“If you have [a lot of] prep required, complete it before lighting the grill,” Moore says. “Otherwise, you waste propane/natural gas, or charcoal/wood if your grill reaches temperature and you are not ready to cook.”

Avoid cooking at too high a heat.

“It’s the biggest mistake folks make,” Moore says. “You can always add more [heat], but it can be more difficult to take away.” One benefit of gas grilling is “you can simply turn down the knobs and wait.” If you’re working with a charcoal grill, it’s more challenging to bring the temperature down.

Give your grill time to reach the ideal temperature.

“Follow instructions to ensure that you get the grill to the right temp for cooking,” Moore says. “Otherwise, more mistakes will happen, like food that sticks to grates, is not properly cooked, etc.”

Now that you’re armed with all the gear and tips you need, it’s time to fire up that grill — and prepare for your backyard barbecues to become the talk of the neighborhood.

Beach season is almost upon us, which means it’s time to buy a new bottle of sunscreen, grab a UPF cover-up, and pick up a fresh beach towel or two. The kind of towel you reach for will depend on your preferences — do you prioritize absorbency over sand-shedding properties? Do you want to feel cozy or have your towels dry quickly? Here’s what I pack in my bag when I’m beach-bound.

Credit: Images courtesy of Nomadix

My Favorite Beach Towel

When I go to the beach, my No. 1 priority is to leave sand there, where it belongs — there’s truly nothing worse than those tiny, irritating little grains getting into the crevices of your bag or the cracks in your floor at home. I also need the towel to be dry so I can shove it back into my bag without worrying about getting my books, camera, phone, or anything else wet. My preferred towel is of the microfiber variety (more on that later), and Nomadix is my favorite.

It’s true that these towels aren’t as plush as cotton, which I miss on windy beach days when I want a little something more to keep me warm. And depending on where you’re getting your towels, Nomadix might be on the pricier side when compared to terry. That said, Nomadix towels are still soft, especially if you get their microsuede material — and the pros far outweigh the cons, which I think makes the price tag worth it.

The towels come in a ton of fun patterns and themes — the national parks towels are especially fun — and in addition to repelling sand, they also repel pet fur, which is huge in my two-cat household. (I rubbed these towels all over my cats and the few strands of fur that stuck brushed right off. I need clothing made of this material.)

I also appreciate that there seems to be a size for every occasion. An original towel measures 30 inches by 72.5 inches and weighs 16 ounces, and the ultralight, with the same dimensions, weighs half that. Nomadix also makes blanket towels that measure 60 inches by 80 inches — large enough to accommodate three people — and weigh 32 ounces. There are even tiny towels and bandanas. Like all microfiber towels, they’re absorbent (they can hold four times as much liquid as they weigh) and fast-drying, which means there’s no funky, wet scent hanging around. Every towel has UPF 50 sun protection, too.

Nomadix towels are also made with recycled materials, and the company donates 1% of its fiscal sales to environmental causes, so you can feel good about your purchases. The original towel costs $40, the ultralight is $30, and blanket towels are $65.

I love these towels so much, I’ve given them as gifts to the frequent campers and festival-goers in my life. I’ve taken the tiny towels to the gym and the original towels to the beach, and one will be coming with me on a two-week trip to Iceland later this year so I can dry off at the many hot springs I plan to visit. (I might also pick up one of their changing ponchos for the hot springs that don’t have changing facilities.) My original towel won’t take up too much space in my suitcase because it packs down small, to just 3.5 inches by 7 inches.

Nomadix bills itself as “the only towel you’ll ever need,” and I think in terms of adventure and travel, that statement rings true. If you have a vacation planned this year where you need a towel that’s light, durable, and fast-drying, you may want to pick one up.

Are the Tiny Red Dots on Your Skin Dangerous?

Beach Towel 101

Here’s a quick guide to some of the most popular types of beach towels — as well as some recommendations — to help you choose what’s right for you.

Terrycloth beach towel
Credit: © Олександр Болюх/stock.adobe.com

Terrycloth

The first thing that comes to mind when you think of a beach towel is probably one made of cotton (or a cotton blend). The classic towel usually has a terrycloth weave — they’re plush and cozy, which make them great for lounging, as well as incredibly absorbent, so they can soak up any moisture the ocean throws your way.

Unfortunately, that plushness means they might take some time to dry. The large loops in the fabric can also hang on to sand, depositing it in your bag or your car when your day at the beach is done. So, depending on your tolerance for those things, you might be better off using a plush cotton towel at the pool rather than at the beach.

If you do opt for cotton terry, make sure you get one that’s not too fluffy: Towel thickness is measured in grams per square meter, or GSM, and beach towels should be in the 300 to 400 GSM range. That way, they won’t be too heavy and will dry more quickly than a towel with a higher GSM. You can find some nice cotton/bamboo beach towels at Cozy Earth.

Turkish cotton beach towel
Credit: © vividflowstudio/stock.adobe.com

Turkish Cotton

Turkish cotton towels are thinner and more lightweight than traditional cotton towels, so it’s easy to pack a few in your bag. They’ll dry more quickly, and because they don’t have terrycloth’s plush weave, they’re less likely to hang on to sand. They also get softer the more you wash them.

Turkish cotton towels are likely to cost more than other types of towels up front, but they can last for years with proper care. Wayfair has great options for both Turkish cotton beach towels and terrycloth towels; you can find them here.

Microfiber beach towel
Credit: © edwardolive—iStock/Getty Images

Microfiber

Like Turkish cotton towels, microfiber towels are thin and lightweight, making them easy to stick in your beach tote or suitcase. They’re also incredibly absorbent, capable of holding several times their weight in water, and they’re quick-drying as well, making them a great option for humid environments. The tight weave of microfiber fabric keeps sand away because there are no loops to trap it — you can just shake it off.

Microfiber towels hold up after repeated washings and can last for years, but because they’re made of synthetic material, they’re also sensitive to high heat, so make sure to care for them properly.

Microfiber towels might not be right for you, particularly if you prefer a fluffier towel or prioritize natural fibers over synthetics. They’re best if you go to the beach frequently, hike or camp often, or participate in activities that benefit from a compact, lightweight towel that dries quickly. You can find more microfiber towels here.

Constantly Sick? You Might Be Missing This Mineral

Better Report
Health | Updated: February 12, 2026
Better Report

If it feels like you’re always sick, your immune system may be more stressed than you realize. A constant sniffle, sore throat, or run-down feeling isn’t just inconvenient. Over time, these symptoms can become normal, but they’re often a sign that your body isn’t getting everything it needs to stay resilient and fight back the way it should.

One key mineral that’s often overlooked? Zinc. While vitamin C is commonly associated with immunity, a comprehensive review of different micronutrients found that while most vitamins didn’t significantly prevent colds or reduce symptom severity, zinc actually made folks feel better faster.

On average, people who took zinc shortened their colds by about 2.25 days. That may not sound like much, but, given most colds last seven days, cutting a few days off every cold can make a meaningful difference over the course of a year, especially if you’re someone who seems to catch everything. And zinc can play a role in preventing illness, too, by helping your thymus, a small but critical gland, produce and train the immune cells your body relies on to fight infections.

Needed. Immune Support Immunity Powder

BUY FOR $60 AT AMAZON

That’s why replenishing your zinc matters — even if the supplements are unsavory and astringent. Thankfully, there’s a powdered alternative that lets you replenish your supply no matter whether you’re at home or on the road. (The powder can successfully bypass TSA screenings.)

The Needed Immune Support Powder is an easy-to-mix, surprisingly delicious daily powder made with bioavailable zinc and other immune-supporting nutrients to help address common nutrient gaps. Instead of guessing whether you’re getting enough zinc, it offers a convenient way to support your body’s natural defenses without the metallic aftertaste. Elderberry is a slightly tart, slightly sweet fruit that’s reminiscent of other berries: blackberry, especially. This mix features monk fruit for added sweetness, though, so the tartness is not too overpowering. A serving size is two scoops, and there are 30 servings per container, which means there’s more than enough to go around when the entire house is sick, several times over

As winter sets in and gray skies dominate the shorter days, it’s not uncommon to feel a bit down. Many people notice a dip in their mood during the colder months. For some, this could be a sign of Seasonal Affective Disorder — aptly abbreviated as SAD. This condition can bring feelings of sadness, lethargy, anxiety, and physical symptoms like headaches, or increased appetite and weight gain. While consulting a mental health professional should always be the first step in addressing depression, there are also products and techniques that might encourage mindfulness and mitigate some symptoms of SAD. These options might not solve the underlying issue, but could help ease those seasonal blues.

Hopefully, some of these tools and products bring some much-deserved relaxation and calm during a difficult time of year. These are just a handful of ideas, but it’s also important to keep in mind to eat healthfully, enjoy the company of friends and family, and be sure to take some time for yourself to be present and in the moment. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, you can call or text 988, a free live crisis center phone service in English and Spanish. It also uses Language Line Solutions to provide translation services in over 150 additional languages. It is available 24/7 and is accessible across the US. Call 911 if you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health emergency.

Prices are accurate as of January 20, 2026. Subject to change.

Oil Diffuser

Focusing on your senses, including your sense of smell, is a great way to ground yourself in times of heightened anxiety or depression. Aromatherapy is an age-old technique to boost mood and reduce stress with pleasing and calming scents. Lavender and lemon oil are two scents shown to produce such mood-altering capabilities. Adding an oil diffuser to your room is an easy and safe way to use essential oils and enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy. This ceramic ultrasonic oil diffuser is aesthetically pleasing and is available in two sizes so you can find the one that best fits your space.

Coloring Books

Adult coloring books have taken the world by storm with many people using them as a mindful practice or alternative to doom scrolling on their phones. Grabbing a coloring book is easy, but studies show that many art-based activities can reduce heart rate and stress levels if you prefer another medium. While this shouldn’t be the only solution to long-term or chronic depression, coloring is an excellent and accessible option for creating art and reducing stress. This Mindful Coloring book and set of markers is a great place to start with a wide variety of pages and colors to choose from.

Happy Lamp

One of the main reasons people get the seasonal blues is because of the lack of natural sunlight. Our circadian rhythms are our internal clocks, telling us when to get up and go to sleep. If you’re finding that your energy is low and it’s difficult to feel fully awake in the morning even after a cup of coffee, a “happy lamp” might do the trick. They’re often the first line of defense against SAD because of their effectiveness. This lamp from Verilux is a simple setup that can get the job done. Coming in at less than 2 pounds with a detachable standing feature, this little lamp is easy to take with you anywhere you need to add some light on darker days.

Gratitude Journal

There is a fine line when it comes to toxic positivity and reframing negative thought patterns. It’s okay to feel sad sometimes and struggle with finding the positives of a situation, but studies show that taking time to reflect on what we are grateful for in our lives can change mental perception and reduce depression and anxiety. Even focusing on the smallest aspects of our day-to-day, like a cup of tea or watching an episode of your favorite comfort show, can boost our mood when we take the time to appreciate it. But if you are someone who struggles with finding the time or needs structure to activities, investing in a gratitude journal might be a good option for you. This particular journal is great for beginners with a simple design and a slot for your pen. Throw it in your bag for impromptu journaling sessions.

Spotify Subscription and Headphones (or a Bluetooth Speaker)

Music is an accessible and proven way to reduce stress and depression. All you need is a way to listen to all your favorite songs. Just like how aromatherapy grounds people with their sense of smell, music can ground people with their sense of hearing. Access to music, whether it’s heavy metal or calming spa music, is easy with Spotify. Or if a good podcast or audiobook is the way you relax, Spotify has that, too. Pair it with great noise-canceling headphones like the Bose Quiet Comfort earbuds or a waterproof Bluetooth speaker from JBL to keep at the edge of your bathtub for endless aural relaxation.

Weighted Blanket

Before I tried a weighted blanket myself, I was skeptical of its capabilities. But the claims are true, weighted blankets can work to regulate the nervous system and relax our bodies out of fight or flight mode. Keeping one at the foot of your bed or by your couch is a low-effort way to calm down if emotions are heightened. This option from Amazon blends easily into any home decor in a neutral gray.

Fidget Toys

You might think that fidget toys are something just for kids, but they’re beneficial for anyone and an excellent aid to release anxious or jittery energy. If your seasonal blues show up as biting nails, picking at skin, or other similar compulsions, keeping a fidget toy at hand can be helpful. There are plenty available and it’s dependent on what will be the most beneficial for you, but this Fidget Dodecagon is a great multi-fidgeter with 12 different options all in one convenient keychain.

While all of these products and services can mitigate symptoms, nothing is as good as speaking to a professional licensed therapist about how you’ve been feeling. It can be challenging to find the right therapist or find time in a busy schedule to talk to someone, but talk therapy is incredibly effective and can make a life-changing difference in mental health and well-being. Starting therapy can be scary and intimidating, especially if you’ve never done it before. It’s OK to not be OK and to seek additional support during difficult times. BetterHelp and Talkspace are two online services that provide accessible mental health care from the comfort of your home. If you’re looking for someone in person and near you, PsychologyToday.com is a great resource for that as well.
