Aging well isn’t just about adding years to your life; it’s about adding life to your years. That means keeping your healthspan — the period of life when you feel strong, sharp, and active — as long as possible, notes Dr. Mark Kovacs. “Energy, cognition, muscle retention, and recovery all tend to decline with age,” he says. “But certain supplements are showing promising results in helping the body function more youthfully.” Before taking any new supplement, it’s recommended to talk to your doctor, who knows your specific health history and concerns. But if you want to come ready with a few ideas to discuss, we’ve rounded up five research-backed supplements to boost vitality from the inside out.

Nicotinamide Riboside

Top Pick: Tru Niagen NR

Our levels of NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) — a coenzyme crucial for mitochondrial health and cellular repair — naturally decline with age. This decline is associated with various age-related diseases and the aging process itself. Nicotinamide Riboside boosts NAD+ levels, says Kovacs. In fact, one study found that NR supplementation increased NAD+ levels in circulating peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) by about 60% compared to a placebo.

Creatine

Top Pick: Beyond Raw Chemistry Labs Creatine HCl

Not just for athletes, creatine benefits both muscle and brain health, says Kristin Kirkpatrick, M.S., R.D.N., at the Cleveland Clinic. Studies also suggest that creatine may play a role in fostering better cognitive function, a key factor in aging. “I suggest creatine HCl for my patients,” Kirkpatrick says. “It’s more concentrated than creatine monohydrate, more soluble, and has less impact in terms of side effects such as bloating and water retention, so there is literally more bang for your buck in choosing the HCl version.”

Vitamin D3 + K2

Top Pick: Thorne Vitamin D + K2

Studies show an association between vitamin D deficiency and early death, says Kirkpatrick. Vitamin D also plays a role in immune health, which is directly tied to aging. “Since it’s poorly absorbed by food, taking D in a supplement is often recommended,” she says. “I advise my patients to know their levels, then choose an appropriate dose with their health care provider to ensure the right dose with the optimal circulating levels in the body.” Vitamin D is also essential for bone and muscle function, says Kovacs, while vitamin K2 directs calcium to bones rather than allowing it to accumulate in arteries and soft tissues. This combo is key for maintaining structure and resilience with age.

Coenzyme Q10 Ubiquinol

Top Picks: Qunol Ubiquinol or Life Extension Super Ubiquinol

CoQ10 supports declining mitochondrial function, especially in those taking statins or over 50, says Kovacs. Ubiquinol (the absorbable form) boosts energy metabolism and cardiovascular support.

Omega‑3 Fatty Acids With EPA and DHA

Top Pick: Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega

One study found that higher levels of omega-3 in the blood could increase life expectancy by almost five years, says Kirkpatrick. Other studies have shown associations between omega-3s and reducing the risk of fatal heart disease factors. “Many of my patients do not consume enough omega-3s through food (like walnuts, fatty fish, etc.), so a supplement route is often recommended,” she says. She advises knowing your levels beforehand and then working with your healthcare provider to ensure a high-quality supplement is used.

How to Make Any Room Smell Better

Whether you’re decorating a space, setting a mood, or masking last-minute odors before guests arrive, the right room freshener can completely transform your home. From the subtle, continuous scent of plug-in diffusers and the elegant look of reed diffusers to the cozy glow of candles and the instant burst from room sprays, there’s an option for every style, mood, and need. We’ve rounded up our favorites — but because fragrance is personal, keep in mind that every brand we mention offers a wide variety of scents. Read on to find the one that suits your space best.

Room Sprays

Need instant fragrance? Room sprays give you quick control over where and how much scent you apply. Some formulas are even fabric-safe, making them perfect for spritzing on sheets, towels, curtains, or furniture.

Tip: If you’re shopping in-store, test the scent by spritzing onto a card or paper, not into the air. Wait a minute to see how the scent develops. Just like perfume, the dry-down can smell very different than the first spritz.

Our picks: Glasshouse Fragrances Kyoto in Bloom and The Laundress Beauty Sleep Fabric Spray

Wall Diffusers

Wall plug-ins release scent gradually using heat and pre-filled fragrance oil refills. Some models, like the Pura Smart home Fragrance Diffuser, can be controlled via an app, so you can adjust scent strength, set timers, or turn it off remotely.

Tip: Select a design that complements décor and allows the mist port to clear furniture, since blockage can hamper diffusion and stain walls.

Our picks: Pura Plus and  Drift’s Home Scent Diffuser Gift Set

Wax Warmers

Wax warmers melt scented wax to release fragrance into the air, offering a flame-free alternative to candles — perfect for homes with kids or pets, or for places where open flames are restricted, like dorms and offices. They come in decorative styles to match your décor. Just drop in your wax melt of choice, plug in the warmer, and enjoy a steady stream of scent.

Tip: Avoid plastic-bodied warmers, which may warp over time. Go for ceramic, glass, or metal for better durability and heat resistance.

Our warmer picks: Belle Aroma ScenTrio Wax Warmer and Sonoma Goods For Life Flower Cutout Ceramic Wax Melt Warmer

Our wax melt picks: Febreze Wax Melts and Happy Wax Melts

Incense Cones

A modern update on traditional incense, cones, and droplets are infused with aromatic oils and designed to burn slowly, releasing a rich, soothing fragrance. Some can also be used with electric incense heaters for flameless diffusion.

Tip: Smaller cones burn for about 10 to 15 minutes. For a longer-lasting scent, opt for larger cones or use a heat-safe warmer for slower diffusion.

Our picks: Ripple Home Figtropolis Incense Droplets

Reed Diffusers

Another flame-free way to add subtle fragrance and style, reed diffusers consist of a vessel filled with scented oil and a bundle of porous reeds. The reeds absorb the oil and release fragrance as it evaporates into the air, slowly and consistently over time. Ideal for when you want a long-lasting scent that won’t overpower the room.

Tip: Choose a bottle that’s stable, stylish, and has a narrow neck to slow evaporation. Clear glass makes it easy to see when it’s time to refill.

Our picks: Tocca Reed Diffuser and NEST New York Reed Diffuser

Scented Candles

Scented candles add both light and atmosphere while infusing the room with fragrance. Made with essential or fragrance oils, they’re known for their calming, cozy, and mood-enhancing effects.

Tip: Pay attention to both the cold throw (how it smells unlit) and hot throw (how it smells when burning). A strong hot throw ensures the scent fills your space. If a candle smells weak when unlit, it probably won’t improve when lit.

Our picks: White Barn Fresh Amalfi Lemon and Le Labo Santal 26

The Summer Cocktails Bartenders Swear By

Though I made it through the rough New York winter fueled primarily by martinis and Manhattans, the oasis of the summer cocktail finally beckons. Rising temperatures are a rally call to replace those heavier, booze-forward recipes and relax into more refreshing beverages — perfect for everything from beach to BBQ, pool to porch.

Summer Cocktail Tips from Experts

With so many spirits, flavors, and mixers to choose from, how do you know what’s best for your at-home cocktail journey? Go for light and tropical flavors, like Deep Eddy Pineapple Vodka or Malibu Banana Rum, according to Charlotte Voisey, head bartender of Bar Tetto Rooftop and No. 79 Bar & Terrace in New York City. She also likes adding bubbles for an effervescent summer vibe, like Roederer’s Estate Brut.

But above all, a great summer cocktail has to be cool and refreshing. “Grapefruit soda and tequila is a match made in heaven,” says Richie Barrow, Hero Bar’s manager of food and beverage. “Gin goes great with anything apple, or try a great sparkling water and seasonal fruit for garnish. And vodka goes with everything.” He suggests using frozen citrus slices to chill drinks and “infuse it with bright flavor as they melt, making each sip more dynamic.” Another suggestion? Reach for garden-inspired ingredients you may have on-hand, like fresh herbs, cucumbers, jalapenos, lemons, limes and grapefruit.

Meanwhile, Jeff “Beachbum” Berry, tropical cocktail expert and creator of Omni’s new Tiki Social menu, suggests starting with a base spirit that can layer well with flavor boosters like lime juice or coconut water. Think gold rum, such as Bacardi Reserva, or a smooth vodka like Grey Goose.

I also love the ease of ready-to-drink cans, like the range of flavors from Aura Bora sparkling waters. And when I want a little extra, Fever Tree has an excellent assortment of mixers. For more options, see our favorite canned cocktails below.

Summer Cocktail Recipes

Looking for more inspiration? Here are some simple, bartender-approved recipes to try in the comfort of your own home.

Limelight Fizz

“This effervescent cocktail combines the smooth and refined taste of Belvedere Vodka or Fords Gin with the cooling notes of cucumber basil syrup,” says Zach Newsom, Food & Beverage Manager at Limelight Aspen. “The drink is finished off with a zesty lemon squeeze and a dash of celery bitters to introduce a unique herbal essence.”

Ingredients

– 2 oz Belvedere Vodka or Fords Gin
– 3/4 oz cucumber basil syrup
– 3/4 oz lemon juice
– 2 dashes celery bitters
– 3 oz soda water
– Garnish: cucumber slice
– Glass: highball

Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into glass filled with ice, top with soda water and garnish.

Pineapple Piña Colada

“When it comes to summer cocktails at home, keep it simple, fresh, and fun,” says Nelson Lemus, Chinola’s global brand ambassador. “A great drink doesn’t require a long list of ingredients — just quality ones. For a tropical twist on the classic piña colada, I mix equal parts pineapple liqueur, white rum, and unsweetened coconut milk, plus a touch of simple syrup. It’s vibrant, easy to make, and instantly transports you to the beach — even if you’re just on your rooftop.”

Ingredients

– 1 oz Chinola Pineapple Liqueur
– 1 oz white rum
– 1 oz unsweetened coconut milk
– 1/2 oz simple syrup
– Garnish: pineapple slice and/or cherry
– Glass: hurricane

Add all ingredients to shaker with ice. Shake and strain into glass with ice, top with garnish.

Freezer Berry Martini

“Batching a gin cocktail for summer makes things easier on you and opens the door for creative flavor,” says Friends of Friends bartender Abe Vucekovich. “I like infusing seasonal fruits — strawberries work beautifully — and Fords Gin is perfect for it, since its botanicals still shine through. Let strawberries steep in gin with a splash of dry sherry or vermouth. Strain out the fruit and stash the mix in your freezer — you’ve got a freezer-ready berry martini made for summer.”

Ingredients

– 3 oz strawberry-infused Fords Gin
– 3/4 oz fino sherry
– 1/4 oz bianco vermouth
– Garnish: clamshell strawberries, hulled and halved
– Glass: Nick & Nora

Combine all ingredients in a sealed container and refrigerate for 24 to 36 hours. Strain out strawberries and bottle. Store in the freezer until ready to serve.

Daiquiri

“Simply put, there is no better time to enjoy a daiquiri than summertime. All it takes is the Holy Trinity of ingredients: rum, lime, and sugar,” says Brian Miller, bar manager at New Jersey’s Stockton Inn. He recommends using, or blending together any of these favorite rums: Transcontinental High Seas, Foursquare Probitas, Hamilton Breezeway, Jamaican Blonde or White Stache, El Dorado 3yr, and La Favorite 52.5abv.

Ingredients

– 3/4 oz lime juice
– 1/2 cane syrup
– 2 oz rum of choice
– 1 lime shell (already juiced, do not pinch, just drop in shaker)
– Garnish: dehydrated lime wheel.
– Glass: coupe

Add all ingredients into a shaker, and shake. Strain into glass.

Summer Hunt

“At Bar Clara, one of our go-to cocktails for summer is the Summer Hunt, our twist on the classic spiked Arnold Palmer,” says Alex Mirzaian, the hotel’s food and beverage director. “Instead of traditional black tea, we use a tropical green tea that’s transformed into a flavorful syrup. This is then mixed with vodka and a splash of Italian amaro, our pick being Meletti Amaro, chosen for its vibrant bittersweet character. A pour of sparkling lemonade brings it all together for a cocktail that’s bright, refreshing, and easy to make at home. For the best flavor, we recommend using a fresh, slightly floral vodka like Hangar One Vodka.”

Ingredients

– 2  oz Hanger One Vodka
– 1/4 oz Meletti Amaro
– 1/2 oz lemon juice
– 1 oz Art of Tea Happy Tea Syrup (or tea of your choosing)
– 4 oz Fever Tree Sparkling Sicilian Lemonade
– Garnish: dehydrated lemon wheel
– Glass: Collins

Add vodka, amaro, lemon juice, and tea syrup to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously until well-chilled. Strain into glass and top with lemonade.

Ready-to-Drink Canned Cocktails

Want to skip the mixing and get down to the drinking? Stick with a ready-to-drink or canned cocktail, which can be simply cracked open and poured. These beverages are also an excellent hostess gift and can be easily toted to the beach, pool, or park.

Courtesy of SipMargs

SipMargs

I am a tequila girl, and I love a good margarita, hold the sweet. If it were up to me, I’d be happy eschewing the triple sec and sticking with a splash of agave or simple syrup, which is why I hoard these sparkling SipMargs canned cocktails as soon as the weather gets warm. With just 6 grams of cane sugar, you’ll get a smooth, tasty, natural-tasting cocktail in five different flavors, like coconut, spicy, and mezcal.

Via Carota Craft Cocktails

As a New Yorker, Via Carota is special pleasure to dine at. But thanks to the cult-level status of its scrumptious Italian menu (and a visit from Taylor Swift), reservations are elusive. Thankfully, I can enjoy the restaurant’s Italian libations at home with this collection of stunning, crystal bottles of craft cocktails. For summer, I keep the white negroni, spritz, and French 75 refrigerated and close at hand, but you can also choose from 10 other varieties.

NUTRL

Vodka and soda is a classic summer combo, and I especially appreciate NUTRL (read “neutral”) because they are low ABV (alcohol by volume) at only 4.5 and only 100 calories per can. Also, I like its simple combination of vodka, real juice, and seltzer. My favorites are the watermelon, cranberry orange, and strawberry lemonade, though it comes in a total of 14 flavors.

Created to mimic a classic grapefruit and gin cocktail served by the Finns at the 1952 Summer Olympics, this canned concoction is refreshing, lightly effervescent, and, in addition to the original citrus, comes in four additional flavors like pineapple and peach. Cutwater Canned Cocktails

Cutwater was a pioneer in canned cocktails, and it has an excellent variety to choose from. However, when it comes to warm-weather sipping, I’m a huge fan of the gin Collins. At 9% alcohol, it’s a sipping situation, not a gulp, so I like to pour the can over a tall highball of ice. But I’m never too snooty to drink straight from the can if it’s nice and cold.

The quest for a flawless complexion has us navigating a dizzying array of products, each promising perfection. We’ve tried them all, from the multitasking BB creams, aka beauty balms, that emerged from South Korea, offering a blend of skincare benefits like hydration and SPF with light coverage, to the color-correcting prowess of CC creams designed to neutralize redness and uneven tones. But now, a new contender has stepped into the spotlight, quickly becoming the darling of the beauty world: the skin tint. What exactly is a skin tint, and how does it differ from its predecessors?

Prices are accurate as of July 10, 2025. Subject to change.

What is a Skin Tint?

Think of it as the ultimate “your skin, but better” product. Skin tints are designed to provide the sheerest wash of skin-moisturizing coverage without feeling heavy — perfect for warmer months. These more natural, breathable formulas also include skin-nourishing ingredients that can fade dark spots, calm irritation, and blur wrinkles for a luminous finish with effortless application.

How to Find the Right Shade

Like foundations and concealers, skin tints come in a range of shades that work best when matched to your skin’s undertone: warm, cool, or neutral.

You’re Cool if:

– Your veins appear blue or purple in natural light.
– Silver jewelry tends to look best on you.
– You burn easily in the sun and rarely tan.

You’re Warm if:

– Your veins look more green in natural light.
– Gold jewelry is more flattering on your skin.
– You tan easily and rarely burn.

You’re Neutral if:

– Your veins are a mix of blue and green, or it’s hard to categorize.
– Both gold and silver jewelry look equally good on you.
– You sometimes tan and sometimes burn, depending on sun exposure.

Tip: Avoid testing the color on your arm or hand, and instead apply a few different shades on your jawline in natural light where you’ll find the best match for your complexion. Then choose the shade that most seamlessly blends into your neck and cheeks. If you’re buying online, many brands and beauty sites offer online tools to help you match shades to your skin.

Have Super Dry Skin?

Look for skin tints that contain hyaluronic acid, a powerful humectant that draws moisture from the air into the skin. It helps keep skin hydrated while plumping and strengthening the skin’s barrier to help prevent future moisture loss — especially beneficial for dehydrated skin. Our picks: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Tint and Kylie Cosmetics Skin Tint Blurring Elixir

Have Fine Lines?

Look for skin tints that contain peptides — short chains of amino acids  — which can improve firmness and elasticity by signaling the skin to produce collagen and elastin, and repair the skin barrier. Our picks: Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Tint and Arbonne Sheer Coverage Skin Tint

Have Dark Spots or Uneven Skin Tone?

Look for skin tints that contain niacinamide. It inhibits the transfer of melanin (skin’s pigment) to skin cells, helping fade hyperpigmentation while calming inflammation and strengthening the skin barrier, supporting a more even skin tone.  Added SPF helps prevent further discoloration. Our picks: e.l.f. Halo Glow Skin Tint and Mineral Fusion Sheer Tint Serum

Have Dull Skin?

Look for skin tints that contain vitamin C. Its antioxidant properties help protect skin from free radical damage, contributing to brighter and more radiant-looking skin. SPF prevents further dulling. Our picks: Revlon Illuminance Serum Tint  and MDSolarSciences Gleam + Glow Mineral Tinted Creme

Indoor air quality wasn’t something I gave a ton of thought to until I met my boyfriend. When we moved into our first apartment together, his top priority wasn’t picking out a couch, but instead finding the perfect air purifier. After going through a couple of duds that just didn’t quite cut it, we landed on a True HEPA Air Purifier from Clorox, and it has made a world of difference. We have run this unit nearly every day in our New York City home (complete with two cats) for the past two years without any issues, which is impressive considering just how much it has to filter on a daily basis.

Prices are accurate as of August 27, 2026. Subject to change.

Clorox True HEPA Air Purifier

BUY MEDIUM-ROOM SIZE FOR $121 (ORIG. $140) AT AMAZON

I have to give it to my boyfriend. Once you realize many pollutants are in your indoor air, you’ll never want to be without an air purifier again. This may sound shocking, but according to the American Lung Association, indoor air can be between two to five times more polluted than outdoor air, and in some extreme cases, 100 times more polluted. And the pollution isn’t just from the usual culprits, like cigarette smoke, car fumes, or lingering wildfire smoke that’s crept its way inside. The scented candles you burn during dinner for ambiance, the wood-burning fireplace you use during cozy nights in, even the meals you cook and accidentally leave on the stovetop too long — all of these contribute to poor indoor air quality. Pet dander, allergens, and dust can make matters even worse.

Thankfully, Clorox’s True HEPA purifiers don’t just filter out 99.97% of allergens and particulates, and 99.9% of viruses and bacteria. They also help answer the question of what’s making your indoor air so bad. That’s because one of its best features, in my opinion, is the built-in sensor, which tracks how various factors affect your indoor air quality. It displays real-time data on a digital screen — the higher the PM (particulate matter) count, the worse the air. There’s also a front light panel that changes color based on air quality: green means good, maroon not so much. Over time, it’s become something of a game in our home, watching the number spike while cooking, opening windows, or using cleaning products, then trying to bring it back down.

What makes Clorox’s True HEPA purifiers so effective at filtering is their multi-layered approach. A pre-filter captures larger particles like dust and pet hair; a True HEPA filter removes allergens and fine particulates, along with of airborne viruses and bacteria; and an activated carbon filter helps eliminate VOCs and odors. The auto mode is also very convenient, automatically adjusting the filter fan speed based on the level of pollutants detected. And if you’re tech-inclined, some versions are Alexa-compatible, making usage even more convenient.

As for aesthetics, Clorox makes some of the nicest-looking air purifiers I’ve seen on the market. They’re sleek, unassuming, and don’t take up too much space. Their touchscreen tops are intuitive, and their 360-degree design means they efficiently pull in air from all directions. They’re also pretty quiet, so you don’t have to worry about any loud, overwhelming whirring noises in the background while watching TV or taking Zoom meetings. The one caveat is that you just have to remember to switch out the filter every six to 12 months.

From someone who once upon a time didn’t give their indoor air a second thought, I can’t believe I went a good portion of my life without using an air purifier. Now I breathe easier, literally, knowing my home is healthier and fresher with just the tap of a button.

The Only Sunscreen I Trust Is on Sale for Prime Day

Like many people, I’ve been hearing the advice to wear sunscreen since childhood. When I was younger, it was usually my mother or grandmother saying it at the beach, slathering Coppertone or Banana Boat on me before I ran off to build sand castles with my siblings. As I got older, the message took on a more serious tone, delivered by dermatologists who stressed the importance of protecting myself against sun spots and skin cancer.

Related: The Best Prime Day Deals

As someone with sensitive skin, graduating from wearing whatever sunscreen my mom put on me when I was a kid to sunscreen that I actually like seemed like a near-impossible feat,  until I bought my first Supergoop. Supergoop was in my orbit for a while before I made the jump and purchased some of the stuff myself — popping up on friends’ Instagram stories, in my peripheral while shopping at Sephora, and appearing in magazine articles I’d read. Drawn to its cute name and laid-back yellow, navy, and white branding, Supergoop’s Play sunscreen hooked me about five years ago, and ever since then, it is the only sunscreen I will use. Hard stop. In short, I like absolutely everything about it. And now it’s on sale as part of Amazon Prime Day, which is the perfect time to stock up.

Prices are accurate as of July 8, 2025. Subject to change.

Something I’ve learned through my sunscreen search is that “wear sunscreen” sounds easy enough, until it’s time to actually find one that works for you. I’ve tried my fair share throughout the years — inexpensive drugstore versions that left a white cast after application, greasy picks that made me break out, and high-end options that came in teeny, tiny tubes with formulas so matte they quickly dried out my skin.

Supergoop’s Play sunscreen is none of the above. Instead, it’s smooth and creamy, absorbing quickly without leaving any sticky or tacky residue behind. I’ve tried the Unseen formula, and while many love it, it left too much of a velvety film on my skin. I’ve also purchased the (Re)Setting mist a few times, though I found it didn’t provide enough coverage. The Play formula is hydrating and makes my skin look and feel nourished. In fact, whenever I wear it on my face, I usually get compliments on my skin. People often ask, “What highlighter are you wearing?” When I tell them it’s just my sunscreen, they scramble to jot down the name of it in their phone’s Notes app. I bought some for my younger sister, and she’s a fan now too.

Beyond just looking and feeling good, it’s also water and sweat-resistant for up to 80 minutes, has a delicate scent (a plus, since I can’t handle strong fragrances), and is non-comedogenic, which is helpful if you’re someone, like me, who has a history of breaking out. According to its website, it’s also the first traditional sunscreen created without oxybenzone. If you’re not familiar, oxybenzone is a popular UV-filtering sunscreen ingredient that is linked to hormone disruption and other health issues and has been banned in certain areas because of its toxicity to marine life. Supergoop Play is instead crafted with ingredients like rosemary and bran extracts, which soften the skin; sunflower extract, which helps defend against external elements; and natural extracts like orange and basil, which give it its pleasant scent.

I usually buy the standard 5.5-ounce size, which is on sale for $29 right now, since it’s wonderfully easy to tote around. I’ve also been toying with the idea of picking up the 18-ounce version, discounted to $54, to keep on my vanity, since I can’t get enough of it.

The Two-Minute Test to See if Olive Oil is Past its Prime

Home | Updated: July 1, 2025

Olive oil is a flavor-enhancing ingredient that makes almost every dish taste special.  You can add olive oil to just about everything, whether you have a basic plate of noodles or an extravagant dish of grilled meats and vegetables. However, unlike wine, which gets better with age, olive oil can lose its flavor over time. If you’ve discovered a neglected bottle in the back of your cabinet, you’ll want to check if it’s usable first. Try this two-minute test that will let you know if your olive oil is ready to cook with.

Credit:  Michael T/ Unsplash+

What is the Shelf Life of Olive Oil?

While olive oil can expire, it doesn’t spoil as quickly as an ignored carton of milk or avocado sitting on the counter. Unopened, its shelf life lasts approximately 18 to 24 months, according to the North American Olive Association.

Like any other food or spice, you’ll find a best-by date on the bottle, indicating when the olive oil is at its peak flavor. However, that doesn’t automatically mean it’s still suitable for use or not. The specific time frame can vary based on several factors, including the room’s temperature, the storage conditions, and any additional ingredients it contains. Other elements — ones you don’t have much control over — play a part as well, such as the quality of the olives, harvesting methods, milling procedures, and where it originates.

How to Perform the Two-Minute Test

Warm Up a Spoon

Run a metal spoon under hot water and pour a little oil on while it’s still warm. Warming the spoon helps liquify the oil, especially if it’s been in a cool place and has started to solidify. Avoid plastic, since it can warp in the heat and may not be suitable for testing.

Smell the Oil

Smell the oil still on the warm spoon. Fresh olive oil should have a slightly grassy aroma. It might even have a fruity or vegetable-type scent. And, of course, there should be hints of olives. If you detect a waxy odor, like crayons, putty, or old walnuts, that’s a sign it’s gone rancid.

Taste it

If your olive oil has passed the smell test, now it’s time to taste it. Take a small sip or dab your index finger in the olive oil to put a little on your tongue. If your olive oil is good quality, it will have a light peppery, fruity, or pungent note to it. If it’s gone bad, it will taste fatty or stale.

Debunking the Refrigerator Solidification Test

Leaving your olive oil in the fridge is a well-known, but wildly misinformed, method of testing its freshness. The idea goes that if it’s solidified when you wake up in the morning, it’s real, fresh olive oil. However, that method has been discredited by experts.

Any oil, with the exception of canola oil, will solidify in the fridge eventually. Even olive oil altered with peanut oil or sunflower oil will coagulate, so it’s not an indicator of freshness. Plus, this method doesn’t tell you whether the olive oil still tastes good.

Storing Your Olive Oil

Whether you’ve determined your olive oil is fresh or you’ve tossed out the old bottle for a new one, you’ll want to keep a few storage methods in mind:

Store the bottle in a cool, dark place, such as your pantry or kitchen cupboard. Exposing your olive oil to the harsh rays of sunlight can cause it to degrade. That’s why olive oil is often put in black or dark green-colored bottles.

Move your olive oil if a heatwave is coming. If you notice temperatures rising above 80 degrees, consider keeping the bottle in the fridge in the meantime. During the winter, you may notice that your olive oil solidifies, which is a common occurrence.

Close it tightly. Oxygen can also affect your oil, so be sure to firmly tighten its cap or cork between uses.

Pay attention to the best by date. Try to use up your olive oil within that time frame to make it as enjoyable as possible.

6 Wall Colors That Will Help You Sleep Better

However you like to arrange your space, you want it to make you feel something — whether that’s cozy, motivated, safe, or any other feeling you’d like to evoke. Color is a key element of those feelings, as it has a major effect on your mood. Taking a color theory approach to painting your walls at home will lead to a better environment and more emotional comfort overall. For a better night’s sleep, you can start with your bedroom.

Credit: poligonchik/ iStock

White

White is the most popular wall color, and while you might think it’s boring, it’s a great option for painting your bedroom. White walls open up the space to make it feel bigger. White also evokes feelings of calmness and cleanliness, two things that help you sleep more comfortably.

Light Blue

Some experts say that blue lowers your blood pressure. Though that’s not a medical endorsement, it does mean it can help you relax when it’s time to hit the sheets. Not only is blue a cool, calming color, but it also pairs well with other colors in your bedroom decor, so you don’t have to worry about it clashing with your existing furniture.

Lavender

Intense purple isn’t a great shade for a bedroom, but a light lavender shade, like the lavender herb, calms the senses and can provide a soothing effect on your mood. Lavender scents act as a natural remedy for insomnia and anxiety. For the ultimate calming room, paint your walls and set up an oil diffuser with lavender essential oil (provided you don’t have a pet who could get sick from the oil).

Sage Green

Like blue, green provides comfort when it’s all around you. Lighter greens, like sage, can also feel very grounding. If you want to feel closer to nature, or enjoy the tranquility of the woods, painting your bedroom green will help you sleep through the night.

Light Brown

Dark brown can be muddy, making you feel dismal and dreary, but a light beige adds a hint of color to walls without overpowering your furniture and current design touches.  If you love a deep brown, add it to your bedroom in the form of furniture or other accents.

Blush Pink

Though colors like red and orange can be overpowering in a bedroom, a gentle pink is a nice way to inject color into your space. Pink represents positivity and gentleness. It can also hearken back to childhood bedrooms and give you that kind of deep comfort when you’re relaxing in your room.

One of the highlights of staying in a hotel is always how crisp and fresh the bedsheets feel. Hotels have mastered the art of immaculately maintained bedsheets, despite being slept on more times than we probably care to think about. If you’ve tried to replicate the experience by investing in an expensive set, yet still come up short, it’s because there are numerous steps hotels take to ensure their bedsheets keep you cool while you slumber. From thread count to the exact type of cotton they use, here’s everything you need to know about how to create a hotel-worthy bed in your own home.

Type of Cotton

Cotton is the obvious choice of material, but not all cotton is created equally. Hotel sheets are almost always made from either Egyptian or pima in a long-staple cotton, meaning the fibers are fine yet strong. For the highest quality Egyptian sheets, look for the Cotton Egypt Association (CEA) certificate of authenticity. This is the only way to ensure the sheets have been DNA tested to confirm the cotton used was grown in Egypt. Supima cotton, while not as renowned, also serves as a premium fabric for sheets and has the added benefit of being exclusively grown in the United States for those looking to cut down on their carbon footprint.

Weave and Thread Count

No matter the cotton used, what sets hotel sheets apart in maintaining their cooling sensation is the type of weave. Percal weave is infamous for its light and breezy feel, as it uses a one thread over, one thread under method that results in a plain tight basket weave effect. This ensures sheets are durable without being bulky or heavy. Because of the tightness of the weave, these sheets are also less prone to creasing and wrinkling and have a smoother finish. While they can be slightly stiffer when you first get them, they become softer after a few washes.

When it comes to thread count, a common misconception is that the higher the number, the higher the quality of the sheets. Thread counts go up to 1500, but for that hotel feel, anything between 250 and 600 will suffice if it’s the right fabric. Luxurious cotton in a decent thread count results in a five-star bed set-up.

Industrial Detergent

Hotel sheets go through a lot more wear and tear, yet they still manage to maintain that new crisp appearance. Hotels use industrial cleaning agents to ensure sheets are given a thorough wash, resulting in all stains being removed and their whiteness kept looking bright. Next time you wash your sheets, try adding a teaspoon of sodium tripolyphosphate to your laundry. This not only boosts the effectiveness of your detergent but also helps to combat any residue left over from hard water. Hotels also often use detergents containing hydrogen peroxide to avoid sheets developing a beige hue.

How to Dry and Iron Sheets Like a Hotel

Hotel sheets are never wrinkled or creased. The quality of the cotton plays a huge part in their almost starched finish. But to really replicate their polished appearance, try ironing your sheets while they’re still slightly damp. If you use a dryer, take them out while they are still warm and either make your bed immediately or fold them neatly.

The 3 Sheet Method

Hotels often use a triple-sheeting method that starts as usual, with a fitted sheet first, a flat sheet, and a blanket or duvet. You might normally stop there, but instead, add a second flat sheet on top of the blanket. This method is used so hotel guests aren’t coming in direct contact with bulky duvets that are harder to clean, and while that’s a plus for you at home — throwing a blanket in your home washing machine doesn’t always work — it also ensures that cool feeling is maintained throughout the night.

If you want that nice tucked-in feeling you get at hotels, use the hospital corner tucking method, tucking both flat sheets and the blanket into the mattress.
