What’s Clean Sunscreen — And Should You Use It?

Say goodbye to harsh sunscreens and hello to healthier skin! Many modern sunscreens not only provide broad-spectrum SPF protection but also prioritize skin health and environmental sustainability in their protective formulas, and it’s never been easier to source a clean sunscreen to fit your exact needs! With safe, effective formulas and eco-friendly ingredients, you can enjoy the sun without fear of compromising your values or your skin’s well-being — a winning combination!

What is a Clean Sunscreen?

Chemical sunscreens use ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, or octinoxate that absorb into the skin. Alternatively, clean sunscreens often utilize non-nano zinc oxide, which sits atop the skin’s surface, is less likely to absorb into the skin, and reflects and scatters UV rays, making it an advantageous alternative to chemical-based sunscreens. Non-nano zinc oxide also provides broad-spectrum protection, is gentle enough for sensitive skin, and provides quicker protection than chemical-based sunscreens that have to absorb into the skin first.

While shopping for a clean sunscreen might seem as simple as a Google search, the reality is that it’s not always easy to know what’s in your go-to SPF. Many brands enlist greenwashing tactics, misleading labeling, or vague ingredient lists, making it harder to make informed, healthy choices. If you’re unsure what you’re buying, it’s always great to search for a potential sunscreen on the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) website to see how well the product’s ingredients are rated.

In the meantime, we’ve done some shopping for you, curating a selection of the best clean sunscreens that check off the highest standards for protection, sustainability, and skin health, so you can find the perfect one for your sun-filled adventures ahead.

5 Vegetables You Should Never Buy Frozen

Frozen vegetables are tasty to eat, and can be even better for you than fresh. But there are some veggies you shouldn’t buy frozen. If you grow them at home, don’t attempt to freeze them yourself, either. Most of these veggies have the same root issue: they’re high in water content and end up mushy or slimy after you thaw them.

High-water-content vegetables form ice crystals inside their cells, where that water is stored. Those ice crystals pierce and damage the cell walls and membranes. When they thaw, all the water that was inside those cells leaks out, leaving you with a broken and limp structure. And this is how those vegetables end up looking wilted and sad.

With some vegetables, you can preserve their structure by blanching or quick-freezing them. But others can’t be salvaged even with this process. Here are five kinds of vegetables you should never buy frozen, or bother trying to freeze yourself without treating them.

Lettuce

Lettuce has an extremely high water content, so you don’t want to buy it frozen. It’s at the top of the list of vegetables that turn into a squishy mess when thawed. In general, lettuce has a short shelf life and can’t really be preserved for long. However, since moisture speeds up the rotting process, you can lengthen lettuce’s life by using a salad spinner after washing. Wrap washed and dried lettuce in paper towels and store it in a reusable container. For even better results, store the lettuce in a produce keeper in the fridge.

Cucumbers

Like lettuce, cucumbers have a high water content and will fall apart after thawing. You don’t want to try freezing them, but there are a few ways to make them last longer in your fridge. Wrap each cuke in a paper towel, and store it in a loose plastic bag or produce bag. The paper towel will absorb excess moisture and keep cucumbers from rotting as quickly. Since moisture is the enemy, don’t wash your cucumbers until right before you use them. Cucumbers are sensitive to cold, so keep them away from the coldest part of the refrigerator.

Of course, you can also preserve cucumbers by pickling them or making refrigerator pickles, which are simpler than canning.

Potatoes

It is actually possible to freeze potatoes in various forms, including fries and tater tots. But, once again, due to their high water content, you can’t simply freeze fresh, raw potatoes. Frozen potatoes at the store have also been cooked in some form.

If you’re freezing your own potatoes, parboil or blanch them first by cutting them into chunks, slices, or fries and boiling for three to five minutes until they’re slightly tender but still firm. Drain and plunge them into ice water to stop them from continuing to cook. Dry thoroughly. Then, you can spread the potatoes on a baking sheet and flash freeze for one to two hours before transferring to a freezer bag. Using this method helps potatoes keep their texture without going slimy, for up to a year in the freezer.

You can also freeze mashed potatoes if you have leftovers. Once they’re cool, scoop them into freezer bags or containers and store in the freezer. You can freeze roasted or baked potatoes by cooling them, wrapping each individually, and storing them in a container.

Credit: TheCrimsonMonkey/ iStock

Mushrooms

Similar to potatoes, you can purchase frozen mushrooms or freeze them yourself, but they need to be cooked first. Mushrooms also have a lot of water, and raw mushrooms that are frozen will be slimy and possibly rubbery. They also lose their flavor.

If you want to freeze mushrooms, they should be sautéed first. Clean them with a damp paper towel, slice, and sauté them in a little olive oil or butter for five to seven minutes until they’re just cooked. Let cool. Spread the mushrooms on a tray and flash freeze them before transferring to a freezer bag or freezer-safe container. They’ll last from six to eight months in the freezer.

You can also roast or air fry mushrooms before freezing. Roast at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 minutes, cool, and then freeze.

Celery

Celery is another vegetable that, frozen raw, can be mushy and squishy because of all its water. It can be treated so that it keeps some of its structural integrity — it won’t stay crispy when thawed, but it will be suitable for soups, stews, stuffings, and other cooked dishes.

If you want to freeze celery so it’s good for cooking, blanch it first. Wash and chop your celery into slices or chunks. Boil it for two to three minutes and transfer to an ice bath to stop it from continuing to cook. Drain it and pat dry to remove the moisture. Spread the slices on a baking sheet and flash freeze. When it’s frozen, transfer it to a freezer bag or freezer-safe container. It will last up to a year.

The One Laundry Setting Quietly Ruining Your Clothes

Ali Eldridge
Home | Updated: June 17, 2025
Better Report

We put a lot of time and thought into our clothes. Even for those of us who don’t consider ourselves fashionistas, we still have to pick them out, purchase them, wash, dry, fold, and sometimes even iron them. Whether you care about what you wear or not, you don’t want to be needlessly wasteful with your clothes, and hopefully make them last as long as possible.

However, there’s a laundry setting that’s quietly ruining clothes, making our stretchy leggings less elastic and brightly colored tops less vibrant. Maybe even shrinking our sweaters and ruining our lingerie.

Yep, it’s the hot water cycle.

There are times when washing in hot water is necessary, but most of the time, it can wreak havoc on your clothing. Let’s take a look at when to use it and what other options you have to keep your clothes clean and looking good.

When to Use the Hot Water Cycle

So, if the hot water cycle is ruining our clothes, why would we ever use it? Well, as is often the case with heat, hot water is better at disinfecting and cleaning clothing than cold water. Washing your clothes at 130 degrees Fahrenheit or above (the typical temperature of a hot water cycle) is the best way to get rid of germs and bacteria. It’s also the best way to get rid of some stains.

However, hot water weakens the fibers of clothing more than cooler temperatures do, causing pilling, thinning, shrinking, and fading.  Only use the hot water cycle to keep your whites very white and to wash clothing that needs serious cleaning, like cloth diapers, socks, and cotton underwear. It’s also fine for towels and sheets. Pre-shrunk clothing won’t shrink more in hot water, but could still deteriorate like other fabrics, so use hot water sparingly.

Credit: Erstudiostok/ iStock

When to Use the Cold Water Cycle

Washing in cold water has a few advantages. It doesn’t break down clothing fibers as quickly, so it helps clothes last longer and bright colors stay vibrant. It also uses less energy since your machine isn’t heating water.  Washing clothing in cold water can even help prevent wrinkles since it’s less damaging to easily wrinkled fabrics like linen and cotton.

Because it’s gentler on clothing, cold water is best for delicate fabrics like lace and silk. It’s also best for any cashmere or wool items you wash to avoid shrinking. Exercise clothing with spandex, leggings, and other stretchy clothes are also best washed in cold water.

Are the Tiny Red Dots on Your Skin Dangerous?

Wash any clothing that needs mild cleaning rather than serious disinfecting in cold water. Pants, sweaters, most shirts, and hoodies can all be washed in cold water.

It’s worth noting that some detergents don’t fully dissolve in cold water. If you find this to be a problem, look for cold water laundry detergents. If you have lots of delicates, you may also want to get a gentle lingerie detergent and a wool and cashmere detergent that is formulated for knitted clothing.

A Nice Compromise

A warm water cycle can be a good alternative to hot water in some cases. Warm water cycles use water that is between 90 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit. This cycle is nearly as effective as hot water for general cleaning, including shirts, socks, pajamas, jeans, and other moderately dirty clothes. It’s a good middle ground, getting clothes cleaner than cold water without wearing them down as much as hot water does.

Warm water is good at removing body oils, sweat, and light stains in clothing. It’s also better than cold water for dissolving laundry detergent and loosening up dirt and grime.

Use the hot water cycle for anything needing serious disinfecting, the cold water cycle for anything delicate, stretchy, or brightly colored, and the warm water cycle for anything needing a moderate amount of cleansing. Your clothes (and your wallet) will thank you.

While brushing our teeth first thing in the morning and last thing at night is a habit most of us do with ease, flossing every day is often either skipped entirely or done improperly. However, flossing is essential in order to maintain optimum oral hygiene, protect your teeth, and keep your breath fresh and clean.

“Most people only floss when food is stuck between their teeth,” says New York-based dentist Dr. Steven Davidowitz, DDS, FICOI.  “[They] can then be too forceful with the floss, which can damage and irritate the gums.” He sees other frequent user errors, too, some of which you might be making, like neglecting hard-to-reach back teeth or using only one section of floss, spreading bacteria around your mouth.

It can take some time to get used to flossing, but it’s necessary to incorporate this habit into your daily routine correctly. Here is everything you need to know about flossing.

How Often Should You Floss?

In order to remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gums, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends flossing once a day. Flossing at night is best because when you sleep, your mouth gets dry and bacteria feed off food remnants, says Dr. Davidowitz.

How to Floss Properly

Flossing should be done before brushing. Dr. Davidowitz suggests using about 18 to 24 inches of floss. The best method to ensure you remove any trapped food is to wrap the floss around your middle fingers, leaving about one to two inches to work with. “Gently glide the floss between teeth, hugging each tooth in a C-shape,” he says. “Move the floss up and down against the tooth surface, avoiding snapping it into the gums, but rather gently get below the collar of the gums.” He recommends always using a clean section of thread for each tooth.

Once you’ve cleaned your teeth, ideally with an electric toothbrush or soft manual brush, you can finish off your dental routine with a swirl of alcohol-free mouthwash.

What Type of Floss Should You Use?

Not all floss is created equal. “Waxed floss is ideal for tight spaces, while unwaxed floss provides a better grip,” Dr. Davidowitz says. “Dental tape is good for wider gaps”.

Alternatively, water flossers, which work by applying a stream of high-pressure water to clean between the teeth, can be a great option, especially for those with braces. Just be sure you follow the instructions carefully or get your dentist to train you on how to use one.

The Ideal Daily Oral Care Routine

While developing a proper dental routine may be less fun than the steps of your skincare regime, it is just as important, if not more, to do every day. Who cares if your skin is glowing if your breath is stinky? In order to achieve optimum oral hygiene, brushing twice a day is an obligatory requirement. Flossing nightly removes any leftover food and ensures you avoid developing a buildup of residue between your teeth. Using mouthwash as the final step kills any bacteria and inhibits plaque growth. Getting into the habit of using a tongue scraper is also important to remove trapped germs and food debris.

Other Steps to Keep Your Teeth Healthy

There are also measures you can take to prevent damaging your teeth when it comes to your diet. “Drink plenty of water throughout the day and limit sugary and starchy snacks,” says Dr. Davidowitz. “Also avoid acidity in your diet from food and drinks.” This means consumption of sodas, sour candies, chips, alcohol, and dried fruit should all be reduced, as it can contribute to bad breath and tooth erosion.

Once you have your daily dental needs in order, scheduling regular visits to your dentist for checkups and cleanings helps to prevent any teeth issues, such as cavities from escalating and causing irreparable damage.

11 Everyday Items You’re Cleaning Wrong

Ali Eldridge

Better Report

Our homes are full of items that need regular cleaning outside of the standard sweeping, mopping, and dusting. I have a routine, and each time, I do it the same way, without much thought on how I’m actually cleaning these odds and ends. But just because something is routine doesn’t mean it’s right. I was surprised to learn that there are quite a few everyday household items that I’ve been cleaning wrong for a long time. In case you’re the same, here are some of those items, plus a few things we should simply be cleaning more often in general!

Credit: Content Pixie/ Unsplash

Wooden Utensils

I love using wooden utensils for cooking and baking. In fact, I just splurged on this teak set. They feel upscale and look classy in my kitchen. They also cover every cooking task I need and are sturdy and long-lasting.

However, wooden utensils shouldn’t go in the dishwasher, as it can cause warping and cracking. They also shouldn’t be left to sit in water for extended periods of time. Instead, hand-wash them and set aside to thoroughly dry.

Cast Iron Pans

You’ve probably heard that cast iron can’t be cleaned with soap, but that’s not the case. Cast iron-restorer Ashley L. Jones says you can use a mild dish soap and a natural bristle brush to wash your cast iron pan when you need to — the outdated advice comes from a time when soap had lye. Don’t saturate it in soap, but a few drops of today’s formulas should be fine. Dry the pan, then put it on the stove over low heat. Add a teaspoon of vegetable oil, and spread it around to season the pan.

Laminate Countertops

To clean laminate countertops, use a soft cloth or sponge, warm water, and dish soap. Wipe counters down, then wipe them again with clean water to get rid of the soap and dry with a clean towel. Do not use abrasive scrubbing pads because they can scratch or dull the surface of the countertops.

To cut through greasy buildup, mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the counters, then wipe with a soft cloth.

Reading Glasses

I’ll confess to wiping my glasses clean with whatever I find at hand, including the edge of my shirt or part of a blanket. But it doesn’t ever really do a good job, and you can end up with scratched lenses, depending on what you’re grabbing, like paper towels. To clean glasses, spray them with lens spray and wipe clean with a microfiber cloth. Many glasses even come with their own cloth, so it’s important to keep that on hand so you won’t be tempted to use something else.

Credit: May Gauthier/ Unsplash

Phone Screens

It might seem like spraying glass cleaners or other products on your phone to wipe the screen makes sense. But most smartphones now have a special coating that repels oil, especially oil from fingertips and you don’t want to remove that protective coating. Instead, to clean your phone screen, wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth like a lens cloth. If you need to disinfect it, use a 70% isopropyl or 75% ethyl alcohol wipe or a Clorox disinfecting wipe. Don’t use any products with bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Be sure you don’t get any moisture in the openings, and don’t use compressed air on them.

Hearing Aids

The biggest challenge with keeping hearing aids clean and working efficiently is moisture. Most hearing aid sets come with a special brush for cleaning. You’ll also want a dry box to dry and sanitize them overnight, especially if you live in a humid environment. Clean your hearing aids using the included set once a day to keep them working well. You’ll also want to replace wax filters every three to four weeks.

Cane Tips and Walker Legs

Just like the bottoms of your shoes, the tips of canes and ends of walkers pick up dirt and debris as you walk around. That debris can reduce the grip and make canes and walkers more slippery. Cleaning the ends is also a good time to check for wear and tear. If any of the caps are ripped or have lost traction, replace them.

Begin by removing dirt, leaves, small stones, and other debris by hand. Then, dip a cloth into soapy water and wash the ends. Scrub any problem areas. You can even use a toothbrush to loosen stubborn dirt. Rinse the soapy water and dry the ends before using. You can also use a disinfectant cloth to sanitize.

Reusable Straws

It’s easy to throw straws in the dishwasher, but they can accumulate buildup inside that requires a more thorough cleaning. Some straws are also not suited for the dishwasher at all. In these cases, use a straw cleaning brush. To start, run warm water through the straw right after using it, especially if you’ve been sipping thick liquids like smoothies or shakes. This keeps buildup from developing and makes them easier to clean. Put a drop of dish soap on the brush, and scrub the inside. Wash the outside of the straw with soap and warm water, and thoroughly rinse. Stand the straw upright in a cup or dish rack to dry so water doesn’t collect inside.

Medical Alert Devices and Jewelry

Wash stainless steel, silicone, or plastic medical alert jewelry with a mild soap and water. Rinse and wipe it dry.

For sterling silver and gold jewelry,  use a very mild soap and water. Soak your jewelry, gently scrub any engravings with a soft-bristle toothbrush, and rinse under cool water. Dry the jewelry thoroughly with a soft cloth or microfiber towel. Silver jewelry can also be treated with a silver polishing cloth to keep it shiny and remove any tarnish. Do not use harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia, since those can damage the silver or other precious metals.

Battery Contacts

Electronic devices that use batteries, like remotes and handheld gaming sets, may need cleaning at the point where those batteries connect with the device. Over time, battery terminals can corrode, and you might see a white, crusty, or greenish residue. Corroded contacts may keep your device from working properly.

Make sure the device is turned off and remove the batteries. Dab a cotton swab in white vinegar or lemon juice and swipe it on the corroded area. Let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub the area with a dry toothbrush or cotton swab. Wipe everything clean with a cloth. Make sure the device is completely dry before inserting new batteries.

TV and Computer Screens

As with smartphones, you shouldn’t use glass cleaner or other harsh chemicals like alcohol or ammonia to clean your TV or computer. To clean your screen, first turn off and unplug your device. Wipe the screen carefully with a soft microfiber cloth that won’t scratch. If there are stubborn spots or marks, lightly dampen the cloth with distilled water and wipe it gently. Dry with a different microfiber cloth.

Stuff We Should All Clean More Often

Along with not cleaning things properly, there are several things I forget to clean altogether. Here are some things that should be cleaned regularly.

Credit: DragonImages/ iStock

Reusable Grocery Bags

Wash your reusable grocery bags once a week to get rid of any bacteria and dirt. Toss cloth grocery bags, like these adorable animal totes, right in the washing machine to keep them clean.

Coffee Makers

You should regularly descale your coffee maker to prevent mold and mineral buildup. You can buy descaler solutions, or use vinegar and water. Empty your coffee maker and fill the reservoir with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. Start a brewing cycle and let it run halfway. Pause it and let the solution soak for 30 to 60 minutes. Finish the cycle and then run two or three full cycles with fresh water. Wipe everything down at the end.

Toothbrush Holders

I often forget to clean my toothbrush holder, but they quickly collect excess toothpaste and are full of bacteria. How you clean your toothbrush holder will depend on the materials it’s made of, but many can either run through the dishwasher or be washed with soap and water.

Hairbrushes

You might regularly pull the hair out of hairbrushes, but they also need washing from time to time. If your brush is plastic or rubber, soak it in a bowl of soapy water to remove any oil and debris. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the base and bristles. Rinse and let it air dry. If your brush has a wooden handle or natural bristles, don’t soak it. Instead, wipe it with a cloth damp with soapy water. Use an old toothbrush to get into the tight spaces. Wipe it down with a clean cloth and air dry.

Pet Bowls

We wash our own dishes every time we use them, but we don’t always do that for our pets! We should wash pet bowls every day to prevent bacteria and germs from old food and pet saliva. Keep an extra set around so you always have clean bowls on hand, even if you can’t get scrubbing right away.

Attending high school in New York City in the 2000s, I recall a distinct moment when Longchamp Le Pliage bags started to replace Jansport backpacks. Slotted somewhere between colorfully quilted Vera Bradley totes and terry cloth Juicy Couture shoppers, the Le Pliage bag offered a dash of simplicity and chicness. I remember wanting one so bad, but as a 16-year-old working at an ice cream shop after school, I couldn’t justify the price. But the thought of getting my hands on a Le Pliage bag never left my mind — and also the zeitgeist, it seems. I can’t go a day without counting one, two, three, and sometimes more people crisscrossing Manhattan streets with the Le Pliage hooked over their shoulders.

Prices are accurate as of September 18, 2025. Subject to change.

Longchamp Le Pliage Handbag

BUY MEDIUM FOR $150 AT LONGCHAMP
BUY LARGE FOR $165 AT LONGCHAMP

After over a decade of mulling this bag over in my head, I finally made the jump not once but twice. I first bought the large tote on a whim in an easy-to-style beige hue. I loved it so much that I decided I needed the medium version as well.

My only gripe is that I should have gotten one way sooner. These handbags, in simpler terms, are workhorses and have proven repeatedly to me that they are excellent investments. I carry one of them almost every day.

The larger design is ideal for schlepping. I use it to lug my computer to library work sessions, stuff it full of clothes and toiletries for weekend trips, and keep it handy while I’m running around the city so I can pop groceries, library books, or other items in it without carrying a separate tote. Last year, I enlisted it as my carry-on during a trip to Spain, keeping it at my feet during the 8-hour flight, which gave me easy, convenient access to the magazines, books, snacks, and other plane supplies I stashed in there to fill up the time.

Meanwhile, the medium size, which I purchased in a greenish-tan fawn color, is ideal for when you want something a little larger than your average shoulder bag but not as large as a canvas tote or backpack. It still fits my wallet, keys, 13-inch laptop, makeup bag, books, and cellphone, with room to spare, but it’s reined-in silhouette makes it a good match for dinner dates, weekend lunch plans, doctor appointments, and quick errands where you know you won’t have to lug a ton of stuff home.

Beyond versatility, these are low-maintenance and don’t require you to be overly precious with them, which I appreciate as someone living in the middle of New York City. I’ve toted both bags in the rain, snow, sun, wind, and sleet, and neither one has shown much wear. I’ve also repeatedly gotten them both accidentally dirty with pen marks and mysterious gray smudges while carrying them on the train, which I easily got out using mild soap, water, and a soft towel. Some people have thrown their bags in the washer, turned inside out, on a gentle cycle to remove stains, but I haven’t tried this yet, so I can’t speak to its effectiveness.

Their simple silhouette is discreet without feeling too plain, while their shoulder straps are comfortable and remarkably strong. They feel very secure, even when the bag is very heavy, thanks to the reinforced stitching along the base of the straps. A zip closure offers additional protection from the elements, and also means no curious hands can grab anything in a crowd.

There’s an interior pocket, which is handy for storing your wallet or phone. If you want the versatility and strength of this bag but need more structure, there are plenty of bag organizers available on Amazon, even some made with the Le Pliage in mind.

Storage is also excellent. When you’re not using the Le Pliage, you can fold it up into a small square and keep it together with a nifty snap button. This makes it incredibly simple to stash in a dresser drawer or on a closet shelf.

Although I already have two of these bags, I’m eyeing a third. Now, to decide between the all-black or dark brown version.

While finding ways to avoid wasting money is top of mind for most consumers these days, I like to balance my desire to spend less with my goal of creating less trash. A year ago, we welcomed our first child into our family, and it changed how we think about the quality of what we bring into our home as well as how much trash we produce. We want a healthy planet for our son to grow up in and a happy bank account. This is how our family is wasting less in our home this year.

As if grocery prices weren’t bad enough these days, try adding fresh baked goods into the mix. My family loves to pick up fresh bread from our local bakery each week, but found it was going stale faster than we could eat it. Once everyone got sick of me making croutons, I knew it was time for a solution. Luckily, the Keeki Beeswax Bread Storage Bag extends the life of our bread long enough that we can actually finish it all, without having to put up with old, stale-tasting bread.

That being said, I don’t want to even think about how much money we’ve wasted on inexpensive water filter pitchers that simply don’t work and break way too fast. We also recently moved to an area with hard water and found our tea was tasting odd. The LARQ Pitcher PureVis solved all of our hydration problems in one fell swoop. I’m happy to report my morning tea tastes normal again, and the plant-based filters last longer than most I’ve tried. The built-in PureVis technology helps keep the pitcher cleaner between uses, and I find it reassuring to know it meets high filtration standards.

Bentgo Glass All-in-One Salad Container

We’ve used a variety of Bentgo products in our home and have nothing but positive things to say about the brand. This salad container is our current favorite for feeding our family on the go. I love how many little separate compartments there are (ideal for feeding my toddler his meals) and how compact it is in my kitchen cabinet. With the right food storage supplies on hand, it’s much easier to avoid eating out without relying on single-use solutions like plastic sandwich bags. It also guarantees we finish that head of lettuce before it goes bad.

Tubby Todd Hair + Body Wash Refill

Tubby Todd bath and body products are a staple in our family. Personally, I’m a fan of using any products that are safe for my baby to use. I’m also a fan of any products that save me money. Motherhood involves a lot of shopping, and I look for ways to eliminate runs to the store as much as possible. One pouch of this hair and body wash refill lasts one child an average of nine months and replaces three 8.5-ounce bottles, three black caps, three printed labels, and three black pumps. If Tubby Todd isn’t your brand of choice, see if your favorite shampoo or body wash offers refill packs of their own, or look for refill stations in your town. We have an eco-friendly cleaning and body supply store in our downtown that offers this service.

doTERRA On Guard Cleaner Concentrate

Cleaning concentrates are my best-kept secret (at least, until now) for ensuring I never run out of cleaning supplies while avoiding overflowing cabinets of bulk Costco finds. You can use this cleaner concentrate in so many different ways, but it really shines in kitchens and bathrooms, which is not a guarantee for all-natural cleaners. This plant-based, non-toxic solution is made of essential oils, which gives me major peace of mind now that little hands and mouths touch every surface of my home.

Truly Free Floor Cleaner

Speaking of concentrates, I have tried a good variety of Truly Free concentrates. Not all non-toxic cleaning formulas are created equal, but this brand works well. Now that our baby eats solids, I must clean the floor multiple times a day, and the easy spray formula saves me so much time. This was another essential I found myself running out of frequently, so the concentrates are key.

Blueland Hand Soap Starter Set

Concentrates aren’t just for your home, they work for your body care stash, too. Once I had a baby, I started washing my hands a whole lot more often. I found myself constantly running out of disposable hand soaps from the grocery store. Now I keep a healthy stash of BLUELAND hand soap refills on hand. They take up almost no space in my cabinet, and you can easily activate them with a little water. I like that the formula is nice and clean (pun very much intended) since I touch my baby all day long.

Purefill Bod Pod Whole Body Deodorant Starter Pack

Once I began focusing on limiting the amount of plastic we bring into our home, I realized it’s everywhere. While sometimes plastic is unavoidable, I try to waste as little of it as possible. The Bod Starter Pack is a great example of how I minimize our plastic consumption. I appreciate that you can refill this deodorant and when you are ready to toss it, it’s 100% recyclable.

Branch Basics Laundry Kit in Glass

After we had our first child, I went from doing laundry a few times a week to multiple times a day. I was constantly having to rebuy laundry detergent as we simply cannot go a day without running a load anymore. I decided to switch to Branch Basics so I could easily stay stocked up without having a laundry room overflowing with heavy, bulk laundry products. The scentless formula is the perfect fit for the entire family. I can’t even remember the last time I purchased regular detergent.

How I Turned My Home Into a Spa

These days, heading to the spa or paying for any type of professional beauty or relaxation treatment is going to cost you a pretty penny. It’s easy to blow your budget on feel-good treatments (don’t forget the 20% tip!). If you’re looking to spend less while still ensuring you look and feel your best, plan your own spa day at home. Skip the crowds and communal slippers. Instead, put your hard-earned money towards the supplies you need to treat yourself again and again. After writing about the beauty industry for a decade, I have been there and tried that when it comes to virtually every at-home beauty treatment. Here’s how I plan an ideal at-home spa day so I can spend less without sacrificing self-care.

Set the Scene

Half the appeal of spending a day at the spa is enjoying the peaceful facilities. To really set the scene, tidy up your home and set the stage for ultimate relaxation.

Oilogic Rest & Sleep Essential Oil Roll-On

Dab on this concentrated blend of 100% pure essential oils — including lavender and eucalyptus — to help get your mind ready to relax. Take deep breaths and try to clear your mind of anything that is bothering you before you begin your journey to rest and relaxation. I love that this product is safe to use when pregnant, so moms can get in on the spa vibes.

Oilogic Slumber & Sleep Essential Oil Linen Mist

While you’re embracing essential oils, spritz this soothing lavender scent on towels, bathrobes, and your bed linens to promote restfulness. It’s made for babies, so you know it’s safe for the whole family, which I appreciate, as overtired little ones will quickly ruin your spa day or night (and maybe they could use some pampering too!).

Wholesome Story Ashwagandha Supplements

Remember, what’s on the inside counts too. When I really need to unwind, I start by giving my body a boost with an ashwagandha supplement. This Ayurvedic herb helps reduce anxiety, boost energy, and manage stress.

Plan the Ultimate Everything Shower

Credit: LENblR/ iStock

There’s no bad day to escape to a spa, but there’s also no time like the present to enjoy a nice everything shower (aka an all-in-one self-care shower routine where you do all your favorite at-home beauty treatments in succession). When life is feeling extra hectic, there’s something to be said about staying home, shutting the bathroom door, and enjoying a steamy shower in total peace and quiet.

Bootleg Bath Lavender Bath Oil

If you’re more of a bath person, make your bath time feel more special with a moisturizing bath oil. Nothing puts me to sleep faster than a long hot soak in the tub before bed. Choose an oil with relaxing ingredients like chamomile and lavender for even more serenity and get the best night’s sleep of your life.

Bootleg Bath Shower Steamers

The key to a good everything shower is not rushing through it. I like to pop a eucalyptus shower steamer in so I can get some serious aromatherapy benefits. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes for the steamer to fully dissolve, which gives you a good amount of time to really unwind.

SHASH Boar Bristle Body Brush

Dry body brushing helps exfoliate dead skin cells, boosts circulation, and promotes lymphatic drainage for smoother, more radiant skin. Even better, this at-home treatment is so simple, you can do it every day. Before you hop in the shower (you will want to wash off dead skin cells afterwards), brush in long, upward strokes toward the heart on dry skin. Start from the feet and work your way up. Use gentle pressure and avoid sensitive or broken skin. Over the years, I’ve tried a handful of different body brushes, and many have too soft of bristles to get the job done. I love that this brush is made of boar bristles that are gentle enough to use without irritation while also being firm enough to boost your circulation.

Beia Bikini & Body Scrub

If you’re used to professional hair removal treatments, getting bikini-ready at home may be a bit intimidating. This is where a good body scrub comes in. The Beia Bikini & Body Scrub gently exfoliates to address dry skin and helps you avoid uncomfortable ingrown hairs anywhere on your body. I appreciate how the gentle formula, made up of rice powder, glycolic acid, and green tea, works together to exfoliate effectively without irritation.

Stack Beauty Treatments

Professional spa treatments take time, and that’s half the appeal. If escaping for the day to your favorite retreat isn’t in the cards, use the time you save by doing them at home to squeeze in a few treatments.

NuDerma Handheld Skin Therapy Wand

High-frequency treatments can help a host of skin issues, like reducing acne and stimulating collagen, which in turn reduces wrinkles. You can get these done professionally, but it’s expensive, and a single treatment every now and again won’t do much. Instead, for a portion of what a facial would cost, keep your skin glowing without professional help thanks to the NuDerma Complete Skin Care System. This award-winning at-home high-frequency tool uses Neon gas to energize skin and boost cellular activity.  In addition to the benefits already mentioned, this “skin workout” helps improve tone, promote a more even complexion, and enhance the absorption of your favorite serums and creams, making your skincare routine more effective.

Indie Lee Bronzing Drops

Summer is right around the corner and you might be feeling an itch to get a jump start on your tan. Avoid the sun damage and overpriced spray tans by adding the Indie Lee Bronzing Drops. These bronzing drops have a silky, lightweight serum texture that melts into the skin, giving you a natural sun-kissed glow year-round.

KORA Organics Turmeric Brightening & Exfoliating Mask

When my skin is in trouble and I can’t (or don’t want to) book a facial, I “multi-mask.” I like to follow an exfoliating mask with a moisturizing one to smooth and soothe my skin. I start with this exfoliating formula from KORA Organics. I love that I can trust the brand to use clean, certified organic ingredients that are gentle yet effective. Because this is a mask and not a serum, you can customize how long you leave it on. Personally, I max out the recommended five to 15 minute wear time and like to do it before I pop in my everything shower so I can wash it off easily.

KORA Organics Milky Mushroom Ultra-Hydrating Mask

Once I’m out of the shower, I follow the cardinal three-minute rule (you need to lock in all that moisture before the three minutes run up) with the Milky Mushroom Ultra-Hydrating Mask. Like the exfoliating mask, wash this one off after 15 minutes, or turn it into an overnight mask like I do.

OUAI Hair Gloss

If you want a professional hair gloss treatment at a salon, get ready to part with at least $100 every time you notice it loses its shine. Instead, I use this under $40 at-home hair gloss treatment from OUAI. I’ve used it half a dozen times already and still have a very full bottle. The first time I used it, my husband immediately noticed my hair was shinier and smoother than normal. If a man notices the results, you can trust the beauty product actually works.

SHASH Classic German First Cut 100% Boar Bristle Hair Brush

To avoid needing a hair gloss treatment altogether, lean into what your mama gave you. Your scalp produces healthy oils that can make your hair shine, as long as you brush it right. Turn every night at home into a mini-spa night by getting your 100 strokes in. While you don’t have to actually do 100 strokes, the more the merrier. As you gently glide this boar bristle brush through your hair, starting at the scalp, you will redistribute your natural oils. Without the addition of any products at all, your hair will have less frizz and a lot more shine.
