How Rearranging One Piece of Furniture Can Refresh Your Entire Space

Need a home refresh but don’t want to spend big bucks? Rearranging furniture is a simple, wallet-friendly way to transform your space. Our surroundings are vital to our happiness and productivity, after all. So if you want to bring new energy to your home without the expense of a renovation, consider moving around some furniture. But you don’t need to move a lot; here’s how to refresh your space by moving just one piece of furniture.

Credit: Spacejoy/ Unsplash

Improve Functionality

To begin, find a room you feel needs a fresh look. If you choose your living room, for example, make note of all the furniture and decor in the room. Is there anything that seems in the way? Having too much furniture in one space can make one feel crowded. Interior designer Emily Henderson explains, “For example, if you enter a room and immediately walk into the back of an armchair, it’s going to make the space feel closed off and have a bad flow.”

Try moving an armchair from one side of the room to another. This can create a wider walkway and make everything more accessible. Remember to focus on the function of a room. In a living room, one of the key purposes is socialization, so putting sitting chairs too far apart can dissuade conversation and hinder the use of the room. Keep your eye on the prize: functionality and balance.

Enhance Aesthetics

A room’s aesthetics are also important. Accent pieces are some of the easiest and most effective swaps. Instead of buying a new rug to replace the one you’re bored with, try swapping your living room area rug with the one from your bedroom. Wall decor is another effective swap. See if you can consolidate wall art from a few rooms to create a unique portrait wall. Or, swap a portrait from your living room with a mirror from the guest room to make the space feel bigger. Putting old decor in a new space gives it a second life.

Define a Focal Point

Another way to enhance aesthetics is to define a room’s focal point. This can be a large piece of furniture, such as a bed or dining table, or an aspect of the room, such as a fireplace or a large window. Is there something throwing the focal point off balance? For example, a large bookshelf on one side of a fireplace and nothing on the other will detract from the fireplace and make the room feel off-balance. Try moving the shelf to another room instead.

Peaceful Sleep

Not many people consider moving their beds — some might have it against the same wall for decades. However, your bed’s location can set the tone for the entire room, so placing it in a comfortable and functional area is essential. There are a few tips and tricks for arranging your bedroom and picking the best location for your bed. Good feng shui says the bed should be south-facing, but that might not be possible in some home layouts. Instead, aim for a wall that doesn’t directly face the door. This type of layout can be psychologically distressing because it’s a primal instinct that doors and windows are “dangerous.” For optimal peace and serenity, choose a wall parallel to the door.

A Better View

It’s essential to look at the big picture in a living space. Sometimes, that means looking beyond the space. At first glance, your sitting area might seem at its most functional layout. The couch has access to the coffee table and provides a wide walkway. But your arrangement might not be living up to its full potential. Sit down in every seat around your home and admire the view. Is there any room to rearrange for better scenery? This might mean rotating your couch 90 degrees so you face the window instead of the side door — but that little bit of work will pay dividends in relaxation and happiness.

Deep Clean and Declutter

Not only will you have a new perspective on your space and a boosted mood, but during the process, you’ll be able to multitask and get a few other things done. Rearranging is an excellent time to deep-clean the room you’re focusing on. Getting to dust bunnies, stains, and hard-to-reach places is easier when you’re moving furniture around. This is also an excellent opportunity to declutter your space. For example, if you’re moving a bookshelf from one end of the room to another, why not consolidate the items on the shelf? Not only will your newly renovated space look great, but it will also be sparkling clean, and you’ll love it even more.

You Shouldn’t Wash These 6 Foods Before Cooking Them

Scrubbing fruits and vegetables before you eat them is basic kitchen knowledge. We don’t have to tell you that doing so can remove dirt and debris from their surfaces. But that’s not the case with all foods. As backward as it may seem, rinsing off certain foods actually spreads more germs than it prevents. And all that extra rinsing can make some foods soggy and flavorless. Here are six foods you can skip washing before they hit your well-oiled skillet.

Credit: stephanie phillips/ iStock

Chicken and Turkey

Back away from the kitchen sink. Rinsing chicken and turkey can spread bacteria across your sink, countertops, and floor from all the splashing and dripping. The best method to eliminate bacteria is to cook all poultry to a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. If you don’t trust your gut, get a meat thermometer to help you out.

Red Meat

Beef is safe to take straight from the refrigerator to the skillet. Washing away excess moisture from meat trays can end up spraying bacteria around your kitchen, though the extra water can also make meat more difficult to cook. Adding wet meat to a hot skillet can cause it to stick. To keep moisture at bay, blot raw meats with a paper towel before seasoning and cooking to remove lingering liquid.

Credit: Angelika Heine/ iStock

Seafood

Like poultry and red meat, washing seafood in the sink can contaminate your cooking space with bacteria and germs, though there’s another reason you’ll want to skip a final rinse: sogginess. Even though seafood comes from water, exposing fish filets and other catch-of-the-days to excess H20 can affect the texture and flavor, making your final dish mushy and dull instead of crisp if you’re frying and flakey if you’re baking.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms become nearly impossible to dry after washing, which is why they should never be submerged in water. Storing damp mushrooms in the fridge can cause premature spoilage, and rinsing immediately before use can make it difficult to a crisply sauteed result. Instead, use a paper towel to brush away any soil that’s still attached. Commercially harvested mushrooms are grown in sterilized compost with minimal risk of bacteria growth, though cooking can kill off any existing germs.

Credit: Thai Liang Lim/ iStock

Eggs

Storebought eggs are thoroughly washed before they’re nestled into cartons, so there’s no need to rinse before cracking them open. Eggs have their own protective coating naturally applied as hens lay them, which creates a barrier between bacteria and the porous shells. However, U.S. Department of Agriculture regulations require all commercially sold eggs to be washed and sanitized to protect against salmonella, and that process removes the original coating. Eggs are then resealed with a mineral oil before shipping off to stores, which makes them safe to use as-is. Washing eggs at home removes that coating and leaves the shells unprotected, so skip this step when putting your groceries away.

Pre-Washed Lettuce

Bagged lettuce and salad kits are typically ready to eat straight from the produce section, no washing required. These dinner helpers are usually marked as “ready to eat” or “triple-washed” because they’re cleaned at regulated facilities that put the greens through a rigorous disinfection process. Giving pre-cut greens an extra rinse at home can actually introduce new bacteria from your sink, salad spinner, and other kitchen surfaces. Skipping the at-home washing can keep your food cleaner and help get dinner on the table in record time.

Why You Should Salt Your Coffee

Coffee is essential to many of our morning routines. Skipping this sacred ritual would render some of us useless. Imagine the disappointment of taking that coveted first sip, only to be greeted with a bitter, undrinkable brew — yuck. Don’t dump your mug just yet. Instead, head to the pantry. Don’t reach for the sugar, and not the creamer, either. Grab the salt. That’s right. Salt is a surprising hack that can improve the flavor of coffee and decrease bitterness. But how does it work, and does it taste too salty? Curious coffee drinkers can find these answers and more below.

Credit: Krasnie Lapki/ Shutterstock

Banish Bitterness

For centuries, salt has been a secret ingredient in coffee, particularly in Northern Europe and East Asia, to improve its flavor profile. Even during World War II, U.S. Navy sailors added salt to their bitter ship coffee to make it palatable. This age-old practice, endorsed by modern chefs and food experts, continues to be a game-changer in the world of coffee.

The number one reason to add salt to your coffee is to balance out its flavor. After all, salt enhances the taste of food, so why not try it in your coffee? Salt cuts through bitterness, which can be especially beneficial if you’re using stale or burnt coffee beans. As the sodium ions reach your tongue, they bind with sodium receptors, blocking the brain from receiving the bitter flavor. Instead, the ions amplify other flavors, such as sweetness, nuttiness, or fruitiness. And don’t worry — your coffee won’t taste briny if you don’t overdo the added salt.

How Much Is Too Much?

When trying this hack, remember that a little goes a long way. Add just a pinch of salt to a regular cup of coffee. (For those wondering, a pinch is about one-sixteenth of a teaspoon.) Any type of salt works, including kosher, table, and sea salt. Some might have a stronger flavor than others, so use it sparingly and taste test before adding more.

Television personality and food expert Alton Brown adds salt to his coffee grounds before he brews it. He prefers kosher salt to “knock off some of the bitter edge.” If you’re adding salt to an entire pot of coffee like Alton, he recommends using one-quarter of a teaspoon of salt per six tablespoons of grounds. He adds, “That isn’t really enough to taste, but it’ll do the trick.”

The Versatility of Salted Coffee

The salt hack works with all types of coffee, including cold brew and espresso drinks. One TikTok coffee influencer, Noah Stern, famous for his coffee recipes, often uses salt in at-home recipes, including his salted white chocolate mocha, in which the salt is added directly into the espresso. He also includes salt in his traditional Greek frappe recipe, adding a small dash before whipping it together. “The salt neutralizes the bitterness in the coffee, making it smoother and less sharp.” One common theme prevails in all successful salted coffee recipes: Don’t overdo it — usually, a pinch is more than enough.

While adding salt to your coffee can significantly enhance its flavor, it’s important to note that those conscious about their sodium intake should use this hack sparingly.

Alternative Add-Ins

Many coffee drinkers use sugar or creamer to add sweetness and mask bitterness, but other add-ins can work just as well. Fat, such as dairy or plant-based milk, ice cream, and even butter, can help. Spices, such as cinnamon (the most popular choice), nutmeg, cloves, or ginger, are also effective. Another addition to consider is citrus, which might sound odd but is very popular in Europe, especially in Italy, where an espresso and lemon juice is called an espresso romano.

Credit: Aleksei Isachenko/ iStock

More Ways to Improve Bitter Coffee

If adding salt or other flavorings isn’t conducive to your diet or personal tastes, there are different ways to reduce bitterness and improve the flavor profile of black coffee. One option to consider is brewing weaker coffee. This sounds unappealing, we know, but adding less coffee (or more water) will result in weaker coffee, which, in turn, is less bitter. This method might not be everyone’s cup of tea (or, erm, coffee), but for some, it’s an easy fix.

Another recommendation is to pay attention to the type of coffee beans you use. There are two main types of beans: Arabica and Robusta. If you find your coffee too bitter, opt for Arabica coffee beans, which are milder and more forgiving than Robusta beans. Additionally, if you grind your coffee beans at home (especially for espresso), use a coarser grind setting to improve the flavor. A coarser grind results in less extraction, which means it is less bitter. Remember, everyone’s taste preferences are different, and you might find that a combination of these suggestions works best for your brew.

The Soothing Color Taking Over Interior Design

Jessica Levy

Better Report

The fact that color trends come and go isn’t news. In the 1920s, jewel tones dominated; in the 1940s, patriotic reds and blues were popular. Avocado green and harvest gold are forever branded as earthy hues of the 1970s. Color changes tend to arrive faster now, with popular colors marching out annually thanks to paint and design companies’ “color of the year” selections. And this year is no different.

Soft shades of blue are particularly fashionable for 2024 — like Sherwin-Williams’ breezy “Upward” and Valspar’s calming “Renew Blue.” However, Benjamin Moore’s ethereal “Blue Nova” may be the most popular. This dusty, powdery blue-violet is meant to inspire feelings of adventure and curiosity and was even unveiled with the help of aerospace company Blue Origin. Incorporating pops of this color into your home isn’t hard — it’s everywhere, from bed sheets to rugs and even candles. Launch your home into the wild blue yonder with these Blue Nova-inspired home goods.

Ice Cubes Are the Secret to Reviving Wilted Vegetables

Health | Updated: July 18, 2024

Finding a bag of wilted spinach in the back of the refrigerator can feel like an insult to both your dinner plans and your grocery budget. With supermarket prices at an all-time high, knowing how to store produce to extend its lifespan properly can help reduce food waste, though even the best storage solutions have their limitations. But don’t give up just yet: you don’t have to throw away those sad-looking salad greens. One ingredient from your freezer can revive wilted vegetables in under 30 minutes. That’s faster than making a last-minute trip to the grocery store to replace your dinner ingredients.

Credit: oke Fong Moey/ iStock

How Do Ice Cubes Save Wilted Produce?

When vegetables like lettuce, spinach, and broccoli go limp, it’s not because they’ve necessarily spoiled. Instead, it’s because they’ve lost their reserve of water. Vegetables are packed with water — lettuce has a water content of 95%, while broccoli is 89% water, and cucumbers are a whopping 96%. All of that H2O packed inside vegetable cells gives food its shape and helps maintain its nutrients, but it slowly evaporates after harvesting. This causes the cells to break down, leaving your lettuce limp and floppy. However, submerging lettuce, spinach, and other greens in ice-cold water allows them to rehydrate. Refilling these cells can perk your produce up — perhaps not as perfect as it was the day you bought it, but with a noticeably improved texture.

Which Vegetables Can You Ice Bath?

Many vegetables respond well to a bout of frosty rehydration. This trick works best with leafy greens such as lettuce, arugula, spinach, and kale, and can even perk up delicate herbs like parsley and cilantro. Cruciferous veggies like broccoli and radishes can bounce back, too, along with green beans, carrots, celery, and asparagus. However, not every wrinkled vegetable can (or should be) revived. An ice dunk won’t stop existing spoilage such as visible mold or color change, or a reverse a transformed texture (like the slime at the bottom of a spinach bag). Pitch these ingredients and replace them instead.

Credit: Iryna Pospikh/ Shutterstock

How to Perk Up Your Veggies with Ice Cubes

Rehydrating wilted vegetables is as simple as filling a large bowl with cold water and ice cubes. If you want to be technical, culinary experts recommend a ratio of 3 parts cold water to 1 part ice cubes. Trim the stalks of any stemmed veggies (such as broccoli or celery) at a 45-degree angle so that water can quickly enter, and then submerge into the cold water for at least 15 minutes. After your timer buzzes, test the vegetables to feel if they’ve redeveloped any crispness. If your wilted spinach is perking up but not quite ready, you can place it back in the ice bath for a bit longer, though this trick maxes out at 30 minutes. After this point, vegetables are unlikely to continue reviving and can instead become waterlogged.

Enjoy Revived Vegetables ASAP

Using ice cubes to bring your wilted vegetables back to life is a temporary trick. While it works nearly instantly, the effect isn’t long-lasting, and you must thoroughly dry the produce before using it or popping it back into the fridge. Revived vegetables will eventually become soggy again, so use them within 24 hours for the best texture and flavor.

Should You Shut Your Computer Off When You’re Not Using It?

We can all agree on the importance of taking care of our computers. After all, many of us spend most of our days in front of a screen. Now an integral part of our lives, most computers, whether a laptop or a PC, run 24/7. However, just like humans, electronics need to rest. One of the most common computer questions is: How often should I shut it down? The answer varies based on the situation. Learn more about best practices when shutting down, restarting, and putting your computer into sleep mode. Knowing when to use which feature can increase the lifespan of your device.

Shut Down vs. Restart vs. Sleep

Most computers have three options: “shut down,” “restart,” and “sleep.” Knowing the difference is essential for keeping your device running optimally. “Shut down” is the complete powering off of the device. All electronic signals turn off, and the screen goes blank. A “restart” is a momentary shutdown before turning on again. “Sleep” (or “hibernate”) differs from the first two options. The computer doesn’t entirely shut down in sleep mode. Sure, the screen goes blank, and it looks like it’s shut down, but everything stays running in the background. With the click of a button, it fires up again, and all your internet tabs and software programs are ready to use instantly. So, which option is “healthiest” for computers? It depends on the situation.

How Often to Shut Down

Unfortunately, there is no clear-cut answer to how often you should shut it down. According to computer manufacturer Dell, there is no official recommendation on how often to shut down computers — it depends on how you use the device. There are instances when it’s safer for the device to be turned off, but there are other cases where turning it off can actually do more harm than good.

Credit: Jecapix/ iStock

Reasons to Shut Down

Leaving a computer on indefinitely can lead to overheating, increased power consumption, and potential hardware issues, so all devices need an occasional shutdown. This means that if something is wrong with your computer, such as a frozen screen or mouse, your best option is probably a shutdown.

If you can’t use your screen or mouse due to these problems, press and hold the power button, usually for 10 to 15 seconds (depending on the computer model), to perform a manual shutdown. Beware: a manual shutdown does not save any unsaved data, work, or internet tabs, but sometimes it is unavoidable. If you can, close out all of the programs before shutting down. Overheating is another common computer problem. Most devices have interior fans that cool the electronics inside, but if the temperature gets too hot, damage can occur, so it’s best to let it rest. Turn it off and let it cool down for at least a few hours.

You’ll also reduce power consumption by shutting down. If you will be away from your computer for at least a few days, consider turning it off. Even sleep mode uses electricity, and if there isn’t a reason for the computer to be on — say, if you need to access it remotely through another device — you should shut it down.

Powering down also serves as a safety measure for your computer. In the event of severe storms or power outages, shutting down your computer can protect it from potential damage. Even a voltage drop, called a “brownout,” can damage electronics by causing sudden power surges. Unfortunately, not even a surge protector completely mitigates the effects, so turning off the device can provide peace of mind until the storm passes.

Reasons to Restart

Software updates are one of the most important reasons to restart your computer because they won’t be fully installed until you reboot it. You don’t need a total shutdown to perform a software update; simply restart the computer, and the device will do the rest of the work. Keeping your software up to date is vital to function, and your computer will begin lagging if you don’t stay on top of it.

A quick restart can also fix minor bugs in the device, such as a malfunctioning keyboard or a lagging screen. Usually, a reboot is enough to correct the problem by giving the device a quick break and allowing it to close out of some programs.

Credit: Konstantin Aksenov/ iStock

Reasons to Sleep

Not every situation requires a shutdown. Instead, opt for “sleep mode.” For instance, don’t power down your computer during your lunch break. If you will return to your device within a few hours, it’s better to put it in sleep mode. This can be done in as little as two mouse clicks. Go to the “Start” menu and click “Sleep.” When you return to your desk, the device will be ready to use because software programs and internet tabs do not close out during sleep mode.

Remote access is another benefit of sleep mode. You can access your device from a different location using a tablet, phone, laptop, or PC. This is great for checking in on a quick work task while on vacation or accessing crucial personal information. Remember, you cannot use remote access if a computer is completely shut down. However, some programs allow you to remotely “wake up” a shutdown computer.

Lastly, while shutting down a computer gives it a good break, the restart requires a lot of energy, which puts stress on the device as electricity surges through the machinery. This stress can harm older computers, potentially leading to malfunctioning hardware and a reduced lifespan. It’s important to consider the age of your device when deciding on your shutdown practices.

Credit: Farknot_Architect/ iStock

The Bottom Line

Ultimately, the decision of when to turn off your computer should be based on your lifestyle and daily usage. It’s essential to balance giving your computer an occasional break and not overworking it with frequent shutdowns.

The Happiest Job in the World

Jessica Levy
Wealth | Updated: July 18, 2024

Better Report

We spend most of our lives doing our jobs, so why shouldn’t we strive to be as happy as possible during all those working hours? BambooHR, a leading HR software company, analyzed employees’ self-reported happiness across eight key industries from January 2020 through March 2024, and the results are surprising. The happiest jobs weren’t necessarily the highest paid or most glamorous; they were some of the most hands-on and labor-intensive. Despite the difficulties of these industries, careers high in job satisfaction have something in common: workers feel valued. Discover where the happiest employees are working.

Credit: JSB Co./ Unsplash+

The Happiest Job

Construction industry workers are happiest. Sure, construction is hard, labor-intensive work, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. Not only do construction workers get to see the fruits of their labor in real time, but the industry is flourishing. Most noticeably, hourly wages for construction workers are steadily increasing due to high demand for new construction projects and a severely dwindling labor force.

According to the National Association of Home Builders, the average hourly rate was nearly $38 as of March 2024, far exceeding typical earnings in similar manufacturing industries. Construction workers are paid more on the West Coast and in New England, where the average laborer makes over $43 an hour. Construction employees can make more than ever before and have their choice of location, as many areas of the U.S. need workers. The happiest construction workers are those whose leadership offers flexible schedules, benefits, and better work-life balance.

Top Contenders

These results don’t mean that jobs in other industries aren’t worthwhile. It’s important to acknowledge the dedication of employees in all sectors, regardless of their happiness rankings. In fact, BambooHR determined that 2024 Q1 marked a universal increase in average happiness levels for employees in all countries. Workers thrive in many fields, especially when their employers value work-life balance.

The travel and hospitality industry came in as the second happiest industry. Following an impressive recovery from Covid, which saw a surge in travel and tourism, employees are now as happy as they were pre-pandemic as new job opportunities surge. Education workers are the third-happiest, but it is important to note that the happiest workers in education aren’t K-12 teachers (who report high stress levels). They’re university professors and education staff members.

Finance workers are the fourth-happiest, but the industry is experiencing a decline in happiness. One risk management employee explained a few of the industry’s current pitfalls, “Employees are not happy with having to go back into the office, and income has not kept up with inflation, which has spiked recently.” These factors and increased job stress due to the current economy have contributed to the decline in happiness in the finance industry.

Industries That Need Improvement

On average, restaurant, food, and beverage employees are the fifth happiest industry workers. The industry shows no signs of slowing down, which could impact future wages, job opportunities, and overall happiness. Technology, which was the second-happiest industry at the beginning of 2023, fell to the sixth spot by the end of the year, hitting a four-year low. Large-scale layoffs and return-to-office mandates are the culprits for the drop. Although nonprofit employee satisfaction improved during the first half of 2024, it is still in seventh place. One nonprofit manager is hopeful about the industry, saying, “People are recognizing it’s not okay to not pay people a living wage just because they work for a nonprofit.” Hopefully, the industry will see improvement as attitudes begin to shift.

The least-happiest industry in 2024 is healthcare. These workers reported the lowest happiness levels in April 2023. Still, levels have slightly improved over the past year, signaling some hope for the future of employee satisfaction. Many healthcare workers cite burnout and exhaustion. However, it’s important to note that many employees aren’t leaving the industry — they’re finding employment in their field but with empathetic management, better benefits, flexible schedules, and work-life balance. This resilience of healthcare workers is a testament to their dedication. Hopefully, healthcare industry leaders take note of these changes and offer better opportunities and benefits to their employees. Likewise, leaders in any industry might also learn from this study, highlighting the significance of employees feeling valued and appreciated.

What Is the Kelley Blue Book?

Buying or selling a car can be complicated, confusing, and time-consuming. Fortunately, there are a few ways to make the process easier. One vital piece of information is the “Blue Book value” of your car. This value, derived from the Kelley Blue Book, a leading automotive guide, is a trusted benchmark that can help you negotiate a fair price and even score a deal. But what exactly is the Blue Book, and why do car dealers, buyers, and even insurance companies consider it the holy grail of car pricing? Let’s unveil the history and uses of this popular guide.

Credit: Philip Schroeder/ Unsplash+

Who Is ‘Kelley’?

This historic automobile guide was named after Los Angeles car dealer Les Kelley. Cars weren’t just a career for Kelley but a way of life. He opened his first used car business, Kelley Kar Company, in 1918 with just three Model Ts for sale. Around the same time, he debuted his marketing campaign “Selected Blue Seal Automobiles,” which became the earliest version of the Kelley Blue Book seal. His sales soared during the early 1920s, and in 1926, Kelley published his first Blue Book, which included a list of cars he wanted to buy and what he was willing to pay for them.

The Rise of the Blue Book

Now North America’s most trusted vehicle price guide, Kelley Blue Book’s popularity took off during the 1930s, becoming the bestselling automotive book. By World War II, the U.S. government was using the Blue Book to set price ceilings for used cars. The 1960s and ‘70s brought big changes to the guide. It became the first guide to use mileage to determine a car’s value, and the company added a “New Car Price” list to its repertoire. This is also when the company’s first guides for other types of vehicles — motorcycles, travel trailers and campers, ATVs, snowmobiles, and manufactured housing — debuted.

The Blue Book’s website launched in 1995, and within two years, it became the most visited automotive site on the internet. Today, it is an undisputed powerhouse among new and used vehicle pricing guides, providing thorough and up-to-date data to millions of consumers in the United States. The company also has automobile guides in Canada, Brazil, Australia, and China.

Credit: NetPhotos/ Alamy Stock Photo

How to Use the Blue Book

The Blue Book is free to use. Simply enter the details of your vehicle or the vehicle you’d like to purchase on Kelley Blue Book’s website, and you’ll get instant feedback. The suggested prices are based on your entries, including the car’s make, model, style, year, mileage, and condition (fair, good, very good, or excellent). The Blue Book gives consumers a thorough snapshot of what a car is worth, but the information can be a little overwhelming for some.

When assessing a car on Kelley Blue Book, you’ll notice two different values: Fair Purchase Price and Fair Market Range. The Fair Purchase Price reflects the price most consumers pay for this vehicle. It is a regional price average adjusted weekly for current market conditions. This valuation is different from most other pricing guides, which often give the lowest price a car is selling for.

The guide also provides a Fair Market Range (with two numbers, one low and one high), which provides a broader perspective, estimating what consumers will pay this week in their area for the given vehicle based on year, make, model, and style. The range has nothing to do with the equipment or extras on the car (you already selected those during your input for the search). The range is solely based on recent transactions, supply, demand, and market changes.

More Blue Book Benefits

Not only does Blue Book give the Fair Market Range and the Fair Purchase Price, but consumers can also search for trade-in value, certified pre-owned value, and actual cash value. The latter comes in handy when filing a claim with your insurance company because you can check the Blue Book’s actual cash value against your insurance’s car valuation, leaving a possibility for negotiating if your valuation seems too low.

Users can also find helpful consumer ratings, video reviews, and 360-degree tours of vehicles for sale near you, making virtual car shopping more accessible than ever before. Once you’ve decided on a car, the online guide can also help you evaluate future costs, such as everyday maintenance, insurance, repairs, fuel, and anticipated depreciation.

The Hot Dog Topping You’ve Never Tried But Really Should

Jessica Levy
Home | Updated: August 4, 2025
Person putting peanut butter on a hot dog that has ketchup and mustard on it
Better Report

From backyards to ballparks, hot dogs are a summertime staple. It doesn’t matter if you prefer all-beef or a vegetarian alternative — summer doesn’t truly begin until you take a bite of your favorite hot dog with mustard or ketchup. But at some point, people began sprucing up hot dogs with untraditional toppings such as avocado, blue cheese dressing, and crushed potato chips. Some adventurous eaters even top their hot dogs with peanut butter. Yes — peanut butter. Don’t let this odd mix of flavors deter you; hot dogs and peanut butter go together just like peas and carrots. Frankly, we think you’d really like it too, and here’s why.

Credit: Ella Olsson/ Unsplash

The Versatility of Peanut Butter

Hot dogs aside, mixing peanut sauce with meat is a centuries-old culinary tradition, especially popular in Southeast Asian cooking. Peanut sauce first took off in Indonesia sometime around the 16th century after the legume was brought to the region by Iberian merchants. Over the years that followed, peanuts made their way into Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese cuisine and are also used in various chutneys throughout India.

Here in America, peanut sauce may not be as commonly served alongside savory dishes, but that’s not to say it’s unheard of. One example is in Minneapolis, a city known for its regional Juicy Lucy burger — a stuffed cheeseburger. Various establishments sell PB&J variants of this delicacy stuffed with peanut butter and topped with jam. Given the success of peanut butter in all of these cuisine styles, it should come as no surprise that it pairs just as well with hot dogs.

Our Review

When we heard about this trend, we knew we had to try it ourselves. We took an all-beef hot dog and a delicious brand of chunky peanut butter — you can always use creamy peanut butter if that’s your preference. After cooking the dog on the stovetop, we slathered it in a generous helping of peanut butter, and the results were a big hit.

From a texture perspective, the peanut chunks added a nice crunchy element to the hot dog. You’ll still notice a textural difference if you opt to go the creamy peanut butter route instead, a more unctuous and decadent bite. The heat emanating from the meat melted the peanut butter in a way that created a richer, smoother, and gooier sauce than any standard mustard or ketchup.

Flavorwise, the peanut butter taste was far from overwhelming. It also cut through the smoky flavor of the beef itself and created a more balanced flavor profile. This is great news if you’re not much of a fan of hot dog flavor on its own. We’ll concede that if you’re not a peanut fan, then this may not be for you, and you should certainly steer clear if you have peanut allergies. But if you like peanuts, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how well the beef and peanut flavors play off each other, as well as the more interesting and complex texture than traditional dogs.

Other Benefits of Peanut Butter

If you’re not convinced about the texture or taste, there are dietary benefits to swapping out traditional condiments for peanut butter. Remember that most ketchups contain loads of sugar, and aren’t ideal for those looking to keep blood sugar levels low. Mustard also has a biting, vinegary flavor that isn’t for everyone, especially some children. Peanut butter solves both problems, as it’s lower in sugar and has a more neutral flavor.

Peanut butter also provides increased levels of protein, fiber, and healthy fats compared to traditional hot dog condiments lacking nutritional value. It also has essential vitamins like magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, and more. Just like anything else, be sure to use peanut butter in moderation.

Further Ingredients Worth Adding

If you like peanut butter on your hot dog, there are ways to elevate the flavor even further. For a little sweetness, consider adding your favorite jelly to create a PB&J dog. You can also transform the dish into a Thai-inspired hot dog — add sriracha and fresh jalapeños for some kick, cilantro for a herby flavor, and fried garlic for crunch. Peanut butter also pairs excellently with salty and crunchy bacon, so fry up some strips and sprinkly them over the hot dog.

Why You Should Pet Your Dog First Thing in the Morning

Nothing warms the heart like waking up, rolling over, and seeing that happy face gazing back at you with love. No, we’re not talking about your spouse; we’re talking about your beloved pooch. Dogs are our best friends because they offer unbridled loyalty, close companionship, and unlimited kisses. In return, the least we can do is show them tons of affection, starting with petting your furry friend first thing in the morning. Not only does this daily habit show your dog that you love them, but it offers a wide range of additional benefits. Here are some reasons you should pet your dog right after waking up.

Credit: cottonbro studio/ Pexels

It Establishes a Routine

It’s important for pet owners to establish a firm daily routine with their companions so that they’re not constantly begging for treats and walks. This begins in the morning with five minutes of head pets and belly rubs. By making this a regular activity, you’re essentially teaching the dog that the day doesn’t begin until you’ve pet them. Where you go from there is up to you, whether it’s feeding time or walking. Either way, this helps add some order and stability to the beginning of each day.

It Lowers Stress

Scientific studies have shown that petting a dog can lower stress levels in as little as five minutes, allowing you to approach the day in a more positive mood. This has to do with a reduction in the stress hormone cortisol. Maintaining low cortisol levels is also essential for regulating blood pressure, so petting your dog each morning can be especially beneficial for those at risk of cardiovascular ailments.

Credit: Jonathan Castañeda/ Unsplash+

It Improves Your Mood

Not only does petting your dog lower cortisol, but it also increases oxytocin levels, a hormone associated with improved mood. Oxytocin is occasionally referred to as the “love hormone,” as it’s often intertwined with feelings of trust and relationship building. The more you bond with your dog each morning, the higher your oxytocin levels will be, thus allowing you to tackle the day ahead feeling happy and relaxed.

It Strengthens Your Bond

Physical touch is a fantastic way for owners to strengthen their bond with their pets. This includes rubbing the dog’s head, scratching their belly, or just lying next to it on the couch for 10 minutes. All of these actions go a long way toward building companionship and deepening the love that you and your dog feel for one another.

It Makes Your Dog Feel Safe

Petting your dog also does wonders for the animal, providing the creature with a regular sense of security and comfort. If you don’t bond with your dog before leaving the house for work, the pooch may feel lonely and listless the entire day. On the other hand, dedicating a few minutes to petting your dog every morning will likely leave it feeling calmer when you eventually head out of the house.

It’s Flat Out Fun

All of the scientific lingo aside, petting your dog in the morning is just a fun way to start your day. There’s nothing quite like rolling around on the floor and snuggling with your fur baby, and maybe throwing a ball around the living room for them to chase. Chances are you may already be subconsciously petting your dog first thing in the morning, and if that’s the case, great! But if you aren’t, you may notice a huge improvement in your overall mood once you start.
