Gardeners are particularly creative when it comes to getting the earliest buds and biggest blooms. There’s no shortage of tips and tricks available in gardening magazines, online, and passed down from grandma. However, not every recommendation is a winner, including one you’ve likely used to keep your pots and planters from becoming waterlogged. Yes, I’m talking about using rocks (or the more creative golf balls) beneath your plants to help water flow away from their roots. Turns out this hack doesn’t work and can even cause some bigger issues that sideline your plant’s growth.

Credit: Evgeniya Sheydt/ Shutterstock

Why Some Gardeners Put Rocks or Golf Balls In Their Potted Plants

Adding rocks and gravel to the bottom of planters has been a standard gardening hack for so long that it’s unclear where the original idea came from. The trick seems logical: adding a layer of gravel to the bottom of a pot should help water trapped in the soil above it to flow away from plant roots. Over time, resourceful gardeners have also used golf balls and sand in the same way, with the belief that these add-ins improve water drainage — though that’s not necessarily the case.

Adding Rocks and Golf Balls To Pots Actually Causes Damage

As logical as it seems, master gardeners say packing the bottom half of your garden planters with gravel or golf balls is outdated advice that can actually do more harm than good. Instead of providing an escape route for excess water, these additions to your planters actually create a perched water table, a phenomenon where water becomes trapped as it moves between two different materials. Instead of trickling away, excess water is attracted to the finer soil, creating a super-saturated potting mix that never reaches the rocks and becomes difficult to dry out. This boggy soil can quickly cause root rot, attract unwanted pests, and develop a buildup of salt and minerals that kill your plant. Ultimately, adding rocks and golf balls does the opposite of boosting drainage and plant growth and instead retains water that can make your plants unhealthy.

Choosing the Best Pot For Your Plants

You don’t need much to have a well-draining container garden that’s hydrated and thriving, but start by ditching the golf balls and gravel in favor of planters with drainage holes. This built-in release gives excess water a place to go as it seeps out of soil, preventing all the problems that trapped water can cause. Most plastic pots at home improvement stores come standard with a set of drainage holes, though adding a few to an existing pot only requires a drill and a few spare minutes. Terra cotta and stone planters tend to also include this feature, though swapping to a well-draining pot doesn’t mean that decorative options without drainage holes are out of reach. With these planters, you can use the two-pot technique, which works by placing your plant in a smaller nursery-style pot with drainage holes and tucking it into a larger planter. You’ll get the same upscale look to showcase your healthy plants, without the soggy soil.

7 Items You Should Never Purchase at a Dollar Store

Jessica Levy
Wealth | Updated: July 9, 2024
Person putting rolls of paper towels in a grocery cart
Better Report

Back in the day, you could buy an entire pizza or a couple gallons of gas for just a dollar. Today, you’d have a hard time finding anything that inexpensive unless you’re shopping at the dollar store. Dollar stores are a fantastic place to buy certain essentials that other places charge far too much for. But despite the plethora of high-quality goods available, some of the items sold at dollar stores are priced that low for a reason. In these cases, it’s worth paying a little bit more for better quality and durability. Here are seven items that you should never purchase at a dollar store.

Credit: brizmaker/ Shutterstock

Batteries

The batteries typically sold at dollar stores are made for low-drain devices, meaning they provide less power and have a shorter lifespan than other pricier yet worthwhile options. Also, these generic batteries are notoriously made from low-quality materials, so they’re more likely to leak and potentially damage your electronics. Stick to reputable battery brands. While these types of batteries may cost more upfront, you won’t have to worry about replacing those cheap dollar store batteries every month after they die.

Liquid Detergent

The inexpensive liquid detergent sold at dollar stores is highly ineffective, and you may just end up washing the same load of laundry multiple times to achieve a proper clean.  These shoddy detergents are usually heavily watered down and fail to tackle grime and dirt as effectively as more trusted brands like Tide. Also, remember that detergents lose effectiveness in time, so be wary of those cheap dollar store brands that may have been sitting on the shelf for months.

Tools

Dollar store tools are far more trouble than they’re worth, as they’re often made of cheap materials and will likely break the moment you begin your first DIY project. Imagine the top of a hammer flying off when you try to hit a nail into the wall, or a screwdriver head snapping in two — both of these incidents would just lead to huge headaches. Investing in a more durable toolset is absolutely essential for most homeowners, so try and shop for a higher-quality brand such as Black + Decker.

Windshield Fluid

Don’t be tempted by those giant jugs of Driver’s Choice windshield washer fluid sold by Dollar Tree, as that product is notorious for being less effective in the wintertime. Using it may put you at risk of being stuck with an icy windshield and no way to clean it. That’s why it’s absolutely worth paying the $10 extra for a more trusted brand like Prestone for some added reliability and peace of mind.

Credit: Andrey_Nikitin/ Shutterstock

Plastic Food Containers

Tupperware is a leading brand in the plastic food container space for a reason: Their products are dishwasher, microwave, and BPA-safe. But at dollar stores, the only food storage containers you’ll find are those made from flimsy plastic possibly full of toxins. This may result in the storage container melting in the dishwasher or releasing harmful chemicals if placed in the microwave. When it comes to food safety, don’t cut corners by shopping at the dollar store.

Credit: DAMRONG RATTANAPONG/ Shutterstock

Phone Chargers

Phone chargers purchased at the dollar store may give you a couple days of reliable juice before they fritz out and never work again. These devices are shoddily made, and you’ll just need to buy a replacement before too long. Always stick to phone chargers made by companies you can trust, like those produced by Apple and Samsung. These devices will not only last longer but will charge your phone quicker than any dollar store alternative.

Toilet Paper

Dollar store toilet paper is often made up of thin, single-ply sheets that fail to do a good job at cleaning. This cheap toilet paper is also just plain uncomfortable, as you may be left with redness and chafing after each use. Brands like Quilted Northern provide a more thorough and comfortable clean without breaking the bank, so leave those cheap dollar store brands on the shelf.

Some car buyers prioritize fun yet superfluous features, like a retractable roof or a killer stereo system to blast those Grateful Dead jams. But at the end of the day, nothing beats vehicular safety. With so many cars on the road, it can be tough for drivers to know what model is the safest one available. Instead of taking a stab in the dark, you can always consult the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety — a nonprofit group known for its annual list of “Top Safety Picks” since 2006. In 2013, the organization unveiled its more prestigious “Top Safety Pick+” award, considering critical factors like crash and injury prevention. Here are some of the standout options among this year’s winners.

2024 Acura Integra 4-Door Hatchback

The 2024 Acura Integra does an excellent job of keeping passengers secure on both the driver and passenger sides, and successfully prevents injuries from head to toe in both the front and rear rows of seats. The only drawback to be aware of is a merely average seat belt reminder system, leaving something to be desired on that front. But otherwise, this hatchback is an excellent option for a safe drive.

2024 Mazda 3 4-Door Hatchback

The 2024 Mazda 3 is a stellar safety option and arguably the most well-rounded small hatchback vehicle currently on the market. According to the IIHS, the Mazda 3 has near-perfect performance in terms of both crash and injury prevention. The only downside to be aware of is that headlight performance can be less than optimal.

2024 Toyota Prius 4-Door Hatchback

The 2024 Toyota Prius is one of the safest and most fuel-efficient models out there, as some modern Prius models can travel a whopping 57 miles per gallon. But it’s also the impeccable safety record that makes these Toyota vehicles so popular. This model got a Good+ rating for its child seat anchors, so you can drive around knowing the toddlers are securely strapped in the back seat.

2024 Honda Accord 4-Door Sedan

The 2024 Honda Accord is one of the safest four-door sedans available, as it’s been highly rated by the IIHS to protect passengers in the event of a serious collision. It’s also fantastic at preventing accidents to begin with, with good quality headlights plus an acceptable braking system to prevent any potential pedestrian accidents.

2024 Genesis Electrified G80 4-Door Sedan

The 2024 Genesis Electrified G80 sedan is a fantastic large luxury vehicle in terms of safety. While other luxury brands may prioritize sleek styling over practicality, that’s not the case here. Genesis took extra care in designing a model that’s both elegant and can keep all of the passengers inside feeling safe and secure.

2024 Hyundai Kona 4-Door SUV

The 2024 Hyundai Kona is a small four-door SUV that’s perfect for the entire family. It keeps every passenger firmly secure in their seat in the event of an accident. Be aware that the child safety latches have only been deemed “acceptable,” so there may be better models out there for families with young children. But this is an excellent choice for any passengers who don’t require a car seat.

2024 Ford Explorer 4-Door SUV

The 2024 Ford Explorer was painstakingly tested by the IIHS, which found its safety ratings were nearly second to none. The main area in which this vehicle is lacking is that it doesn’t have any sort of reliable seat belt reminder system, so just be sure to strap in the moment you enter the vehicle. Once you hear that seat belt lock you’re good to go, as you’ll have a safe journey ahead of you.

2024 Kia Telluride 4-Door SUV

The 2024 Kia Telluride earned near-perfect ratings across the board within the midsize SUV space. The one area in which the IIHS noticed less-than-ideal performance is with the rear passenger restraints. Otherwise, the Kia Telluride received nearly perfect scores in terms of passenger safety and crash prevention.

2024 Nissan Pathfinder 4-Door SUV

The 2024 Nissan Pathfinder is one of the best options available if you have young children. It achieved stellar ratings for its child car seat restraints and near-perfect scores for preventing injury in the event of a serious crash. Just be aware that the headlights could be improved upon, as they’re not curve-adaptive, but otherwise, this is an excellent vehicle in terms of safety.

Credit: Courtesy of Subaru

2024 Subaru Ascent 4-Door SUV

The 2024 Subaru Ascent lives up to Subaru’s reputation of being an excellent family car, as this SUV will keep the entire clan safe.  This model is a noted improvement compared to earlier Subaru models, as the IIHS rated it higher than recent models from just a few years ago. You can generally trust Subaru to do a great job of keeping their consumers safe.

Credit: Courtesy of Acura

2024 Acura MDX 4-Door SUV

The 2024 Acura MDX is expertly designed to lessen the risk of injury in the event of a serious collision. Just be sure to strap in to avoid any potential harm, as the car lacks a good seat belt reminder system. But for what it lacks, it more than makes up for in terms of reliability and comfort.

2024 BMW X3 4-Door SUV

The 2024 BMW X3 is one of the most desirable luxury SUVs available, as it allows you to ride in both safety and style. During crash testing, this BMW did an excellent job of mitigating the risk of serious injury, earning itself stellar scores in that category. Remember that this model was deemed to only have marginal seat belt reminders and child seat restraints, however. Otherwise, it’s a very safe vehicle.

Credit: Courtesy of Lincoln

2024 Lincoln Nautilus 4-Door SUV

The 2024 Lincoln Nautilus is the preeminent midsize luxury SUV when it comes to safety, as this model received perfect grades from the IIHS in all but one category. The only slight ding was concerning driver restraints, which were deemed “acceptable” in the event of a crash. Otherwise, you’d be hard-pressed to find more of a sure thing than the 2024 Lincoln Nautilus.

Credit: Courtesy of Mercedes-Benz

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class 4-Door SUV

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class earned far more than just style points. This safe and luxurious option is renowned for keeping the driver and passengers safe in the event of a collision from any direction. While this vehicle may cost more than other more affordable options, it’s well worth the price, considering how much safety it provides.

Credit: Courtesy of Rivian

2024 Rivian R1T Crew Cab Pickup

The 2024 Rivian R1T is the only pickup truck to achieve the Top Safety Pick+ rating in 2024, and for good reason. This large pickup is fantastic at protecting its passengers and any contents in a crash. The only thing to take note of is that rear passengers may lack adequate head protection in rare instances, but otherwise, the IIHS deemed this to be one of the sturdiest new vehicles on the road. Of course, starting at $70,000, that safety comes at a cost.

Why Your Pots Always Bubble Over (And How to Stop It)

Pot boiling over

Let’s set the scene: You’re enjoying a glass of wine while making a nice pasta dinner. You’re listening to your favorite music, and your ingredients are prepped and ready to go. All is going according to plan until the inevitable happens. You hear the telltale sizzle of water overflowing on the stove. You quickly run over to turn it down, losing your boil and creating a mess on the stovetop. You let out a big sigh and begrudgingly continue cooking. Although one bubbled-over pot isn’t the end of the world, it is annoying and can ruin a meal. Here’s why pots boil over and some tricks to stop it.

Why Water Boils Over

There’s no escaping bubbles when you boil water. They’re formed by the extreme heat, which pushes air out of the water. If the temperature is too hot, these already unstable bubbles are pushed further to the top and can overflow if water levels are too high — a sort of stovetop bubble volcano. What’s worse, starchy foods like pasta create a film in the water that makes bubbles more resistant to popping, which is why pasta water is one of the most likely culprits for spillover. Fortunately, there are a few easy ways to reduce or prevent this, even for pasta lovers!

The Controversial Wooden Spoon Hack

You might’ve heard that placing a spoon across the rim of your pot will stop water from boiling over. Some people swear by it, while others feel underwhelmed. In truth, the results vary, but it usually works for at least a few seconds. As the spoon momentarily delays the bubbles from rising, you’ll have enough time to get to the stove to turn down the heat on the burner.A plain old wooden mixing spoon (or heat-proof spoon, such as silicone) is all you need for this trick. Choose one that is longer than the diameter of your pot and lay it across the top before you begin to boil it. The spoon should repel bubbles that dare to spill over the edge. It works because the bubbles in boiling water are unstable, and the spoon destabilizes them even more and pops them. The spoon is also cooler than the water, so the steam and bubbles condense into water as it reaches the spoon.

Credit: Anna Hoychuk/ Shutterstock

A ‘Butter’ Option

Next time you’re ready to boil water, reach for the butter. Rubbing some butter along the rim of your pot or adding some to the water before you turn on the burner should deter water from boiling over. This trick works because oil and water don’t mix, and butter contains up to 20% oil. It creates a barrier around the rim to prevent spillage, disrupting the foaming process. When added directly to the water, it results in a less aggressive boil by disturbing the bubbles. You can use other cooking oils, but beware — rubbing vegetable oil around the rim of your pot can get messy. Adding a teaspoon or so directly to the water is probably easier.

There is one exception when you should use this trick with caution. When cooking pasta, rub the butter around the rim instead of adding it directly to the pasta water. The butter can make noodles very oily, and the sauce will slide right off.

Feeling Salty?

Other options exist if extra butter or oil doesn’t suit your needs. When making pasta, you can add a teaspoon or so of salt to the water before turning on the burner. This subdues the starch-fueled foam that pasta commonly causes. Salt not only keeps bubbles at bay but can also add flavor to the pasta. This trick can be used to boil anything because it helps maintain a more even, lower-temperature boil. Remember: Don’t add too much extra salt to your recipes, especially if you’re making soup or something with broth, because the salt will over-flavor the liquid.

Credit: Courtesy of Amazon

Invest in a Silicone Cover

If none of these at-home remedies do the trick, consider investing in a silicone spill stopper for your pot. The stopper ventilates the boiling pot to allow steam out and prevent bubbles from escaping. Just be sure to measure the diameter of your pot before ordering to ensure a snug fit. Look for a heat-resistant, food-grade material, such as BPA-free and non-toxic silicone.

Why Laundry Soap Is Better Than Laundry Detergent

Jessica Levy
Home | Updated: July 8, 2024
Better Report

Many of us have been doing laundry for decades. But even after thousands of cycles worth of experience, we all succumb to the pitfalls of this loathed chore. From forgetting a red shirt in a load of white clothes to shrinking a new pair of trousers — it’s enough to drive you crazy. To further complicate things, there are so many laundry products to choose from, like laundry soap. You might be thinking, “Isn’t that just detergent?” Well, kind of. Laundry soap performs the same cleaning duties as laundry detergent but with different ingredients. To add to the confusion, some brands label their detergent as “soap” and vice versa. This can be frustrating, but don’t throw in the towel just yet. Discover the ins and outs of laundry soap and why it might be a better choice than traditional detergent.

Prices are accurate as of July 8, 2024. Subject to change. All featured products and deals are selected independently and objectively by the author. Better Report may receive a share of sales via affiliate links in content.

Detergent vs. Soap

True soaps are made with natural ingredients, including fats and oils from plants, animals, and minerals, combined with a base, such as lye. When the ingredients for soap are mixed together, a reaction called “saponification” happens. This new creation, called “soap,” removes dirt from surfaces, skin, and fabric. If something is marketed as a “natural laundry detergent,” it might be a laundry soap, but because consumers are more familiar with the word “detergent,” the term is used instead. Today, most “soaps” — hand soap, shampoo, dish soap, and more — are actually detergents. The FDA notes that there are few true soaps on the market today.

A detergent is a water-soluble cleansing agent made of artificial surfactants that penetrate fibers to remove dirt and oils. Detergents are the most popular types of laundry-washing products today. While they can eliminate stubborn stains and built-up grime, they aren’t as safe for human and environmental health as natural soaps.

Long-term detergent use can cause skin irritation and pose health risks. In a study published in the Journal of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Research, some surfactants found in detergents were determined harmful to human health. The study explained that surfactants are toxic and may accumulate in the body. Other studies have shown that some surfactants are absorbed through the skin, which can lead to liver damage and other chronic symptoms and possibly be carcinogenic. For this reason, some laundry doers opt for a more natural approach: laundry soap without detergents and added chemicals. By making the switch, you’re protecting your health and the environment.

Here’s a crash course in laundry product ingredients to determine whether you’re using a detergent or a soap:

Common soap-related ingredients: Coconut oil, olive oil, sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide, potassium chloride, potassium hydroxide.

Common detergent-related ingredients: sulfates, ethoxylates, betaines, oxides.

Tip: If your product contains ingredients from both lists, it’s a detergent.

Laundry Soap 101

Switching to laundry soap is a breeze. It can replace any detergent to clean your clothes in the washing machine. It comes in a few forms — powder, liquid, and flakes — but powders and liquids are the most popular and cost-effective. Using it is as easy as using liquid detergent. Add the recommended amount into the barrel and your clothes before you start the wash. Soap should clean your laundry as well as detergent would, but read the product label to be sure. Some laundry soaps, especially flakes, work best in warm or hot water because they don’t dissolve in cooler rinses. However, plenty of powder and liquid options are made for cold-water washing.

If you want to embark on the laundry soap journey, a good starting point is the brand Ingredients Matter. Their award-winning, fragrance-free Laundry Soap received an “A” rating on the EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning. It contains a blend of soaps and salts derived from plant-based ingredients like coconut and olive oils. It’s free from detergents, although it is marketed using the word “detergent.” (Who knew laundry could be so confusing?)

What’s better, laundry soap won’t break the bank. The cost of the average laundry soap breaks down to about 30 cents per load, roughly the same as regular detergent. Even the “Laundry Evangelist” Patric Richardson prefers laundry soap to detergent. “A lot of detergents have stuff in them that we don’t need,” explains Richardson, who sells laundry soap flakes in his line of at-home products. Still, plenty of products exist for those who prefer using liquid soap. Try Liquid Laundry from Charlie’s Soap, a detergent-free liquid that is hypoallergenic and eco-friendly. It seems there is a soap out there for everyone. Hopefully, you can now decide whether ditching detergent and switching to laundry soap is right for you.

9 Things to Never Buy at a Yard Sale

Yard sales are a one-of-a-kind shopping experience, as you can walk away with anything from an antique cookie jar shaped like Betty Boop to a DVD copy of Forrest Gump. But for all the great deals to be had at yard sales, there are times when you should resist the urge to buy at a discounted price, even if the item appears to be in perfectly good condition. Certain offerings pose major sanitary issues, while others are a huge safety risk if a previous owner has already used them. Here are nine things to never buy at a yard sale.

Car Seats

Car seats are essential for keeping young children safe on the road, so you shouldn’t risk buying one secondhand even if everything seems in working order. Even if the device looks good to the naked eye, you never know if it’s been in a previous accident or subject to a product recall. Car seats also expire after 6 to 10 years on average, so it’s riskier if the car seat looks like an older model. It should go without saying that it’s best not to risk any child’s well-being just so that you can score a great deal.

Bike Helmets

Bike helmets generally expire every three to five years, and should never be worn again after an accident. But if you buy one at a yard sale, you can never be 100% sure about either matter and just have to take the seller’s word for it. Keeping your noggin safe while biking is essential, so buy yourself and your children a new bike helmet every time rather than risk disaster.

Makeup

Many makeup products only have a shelf life of around a year to begin with, so buying used makeup at a yard sale likely means the item’s time has come and gone. But this is also a major sanitary issue. You never know whose lips, eyes, or other sensitive body parts may have come into contact with the makeup being sold. The idea of swapping germs with a stranger should be more than enough to show why buying used makeup is a bad idea — even if the color looks really good on you.

Nonstick Pans

You’re always better off buying new nonstick cookware rather than purchasing it used. That’s because the more nonstick pans get used, the more their Teflon coating chips away. Not only does this make the pans less effective, but it also poses potential health risks. Older nonstick pans are said to contain carcinogens like Perfluorooctanoic acid. If a pan is chipped, that increases the likelihood of those carcinogens getting mixed in with any food you’re cooking.

Cribs

Buying a secondhand crib is yet another safety concern to be aware of. It’s generally said that cribs last for around 10 years — any longer than that and their structural integrity may be compromised. You can also never be sure if the crib suffered any damage over the years, but if it did, it may be less stable than a newer model. Never cut corners when it comes to the safety of young children, even if it means paying more.

Smoke Detectors

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are essential for maintaining a safe home. That’s why it’s such a bad idea to purchase a used model without being able to test it beforehand. Never take the seller’s word that the smoke detector works just fine. If it doesn’t work, you may not know until it’s too late.

Stuffed Animals

Old stuffed animals may still look cute, but they can potentially be full of hidden mold and fleas. That’s why you should never buy any used stuffed animals unless you want to risk introducing dirt and bugs into your own home. It’s not worth cleaning any old stuffed animals either; just buy new ones and rest easily.

Mattresses

Mattresses are an ideal environment for bed bugs, but you may not realize it until it’s already too late. Even if you give the mattress a once over, you may miss a bed bug or two tucked into a crevice. Bringing a bed bug-infested mattress home will cause huge headaches for you, as you’ll need to hire a specialist to come in and fumigate your home. It’s always best to buy a new mattress to avoid this issue.

Shoes

Buying a pair of used shoes at a yard sale is a bad idea for a number of reasons. First, chances are those shoes have molded to the shape of the previous owner’s feet and may feel uncomfortable when you put them on. Also, used shoes lack enough cushioning to provide comfort. Rather than buy shoes at yard sales, try to take advantage of frequent deals at local shoe stores or online.

6 Common Habits That Are Prematurely Aging Your Brain

Health | Updated: July 2, 2024

Youth isn’t just skin deep; like our bodies, our brains can age more or less depending on our lifestyles, habits, and diets. Moreover, keeping our brains youthful seems far more important than a few smile lines, right? Fortunately, there are relatively easy ways to slow the brain’s aging process and foster a healthier mind. By understanding common habits that can prematurely age your brain, you can make positive changes to better control your health and overall well-being.

You Overindulge in Alcohol

Having a glass of wine with a friend or a cocktail at a birthday party is undoubtedly a fun way for many of us to socialize and celebrate. Alcoholic beverages are so ingrained in our culture that many don’t think twice about indulging in a few during a night out, but here’s why you should forgo your weeknight beers or glasses of wine for something non-alcoholic. Alcohol is one of the most significant components of premature aging of the brain.

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, over time, drinking too much alcohol causes brain cells to die, literally shrinking the brain tissue. With fewer brain cells available to carry messages and perform tasks, daily life becomes more difficult. This can happen from drinking regularly or from drinking more than the recommended daily limit. However, by understanding the importance of moderation, you can take control of your brain health. The recommended daily alcohol limits are one standard drink for women and two for men. A standard drink is typically equivalent to a 12-ounce beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine, or a 1.5-ounce shot. The weekly limits are seven and fourteen, respectively.

You Stay in All the Time

Passing on a night out is fine. Everyone needs a rest or a mental health break occasionally. But don’t skip out too often. Studies have found that not having enough social interaction can age your brain. This idea is supported by studies of Blue Zones, that is, communities worldwide whose residents most often live to be 100. One of the common factors between all these communities is that socializing is a vital part of their culture, suggesting that it helps them live longer.

Furthermore, a recent study published in the Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience journal found that social isolation and loneliness were associated with poor cognitive aging. So, whether it is a game night at a friend’s house, a family dinner, or a big event, push yourself to say “yes” to spending time with loved ones. You’ll have fun, and these social interactions will also benefit your brain.

You Love Junk Food

What’s your junk food Achilles’ heel? Everyone has one — fried foods, sodas, candies, and chips are common culprits. Unfortunately, kicking a junk food habit is tricky, mainly because it’s so accessible while you’re on the go. But here’s why you might want to rethink your daily drive-thru habits. Neuroscientist Dr. Amy Reichelt explains that junk food is addictive because it activates the reward system in our brains and releases dopamine, making us feel good — we love eating tasty treats. However, overly sweetened and fatty foods are bad for the brain.

Dr. Reichelt says that high levels of sugar and fats can inflame the brain, damaging brain cells. One study showed that just five days of eating sugary sweets caused measurable brain inflammation. Damage to the brain’s hippocampus has also been reported, which can lead to memory loss and inhibited learning capabilities. Lastly, the inflammation can hinder the creation of new neurons in the brain, which further ages it. When choosing your meals and snacks, remember you’re fueling your body and brain for years to come, not just for the few minutes it takes you to finish that piece of cake.

You Skip the Gym

With streaming platforms and social media galore, it’s becoming easier and easier to opt for a night in front of a screen. Unfortunately, this habit of slumping on the couch immediately after work isn’t the healthiest choice. Working out is one of the best things you can do to keep your brain and the rest of your body healthy through all stages of adulthood. A study published in Neurology Clinical Practice revealed the cognitive impact of physical exercise. Physical exercise promotes learning, planning, concentrating, and maintaining a clear, active mind. It also counteracts the effects of cognitive aging.

Neuropsychologist Aaron Bonner-Jackson, PhD, also emphasizes the importance of physical exercise for the brain. “In general, even in people who are at risk for development of Alzheimer’s or other dementias, can stave off decline in some cases for many years and help people function better.” This is encouraging news for those with genetic predispositions and anyone looking to bolster their brain health. If you were looking for a sign to go to the gym this week, this is it!

You Don’t Switch Up Your Routine

Is your daily routine in the doldrums? Or maybe you haven’t even noticed it was until now. While having a fixed schedule helps many people with their productivity, the mundane can cause premature brain aging. If ripping up your planner sounds like torture, try this. Block off a few hours once or twice a week for “free time” to spontaneously decide what you’ll do. This keeps your brain excited and motivated. According to Harvard Medical School, challenging your brain with new mental exercises helps maintain the health of brain cells and stimulates connection among them. During your newly allotted “free time,” try these Harvard-recommended activities for brain health: try a new hobby, learn a new skill or language, volunteer, or mentor.

You Sacrifice Sleep

Here’s a new sleep motto to promote a healthier brain: Seven hours a day keeps aging at bay. Getting the doctor-recommended amount of sleep per night works wonders on your mental and physical health, and according to new research, it bodes well for long-term brain health, too. A study at the University of Zurich revealed that sleep loss can cause changes to the brain that would typically be age-related.

However, after a full night’s sleep, the same participants saw their brain’s estimated “age” change again, suggesting that even one night of missed sleep impacts brain aging tremendously. This is because sleep gives the brain a break. It needs this downtime to cleanse itself of toxins, reorganize, store memories, and form new connections. Without sleep, it can’t function properly. If your sleep habits aren’t up to par, let this be your sign to nail down a nighttime routine and aim to get more rest.

How To Clean Your House in One Hour

Jessica Levy
Home | Updated: July 2, 2024
Person scrubbing sink with a green sponge
Better Report

You can accomplish a lot in just one hour, such as getting in a good workout at the gym or watching three episodes of Friends reruns. You can also clean your house in one hour, even if the place currently looks like a disaster. By setting aside 60 minutes each week, you can easily transform your house from a cluttered mess into a well-organized sanctuary. This speed cleaning concept is ideal for people who wish they had more free time to clean around the house, as you’ll really notice a stark difference in just an hour.

Make a Plan

With only an hour available, it’s hard to imagine cleaning every corner of the house in just one go. Make an assessment of which areas need the most attention. Maybe you’re having guests next week, so you should tackle the guest bedroom and bathroom. Or perhaps you’re hosting a dinner party soon, in which case the dining area should receive special care. These rooms should be prioritized to some degree, and you can always move on to the others if you have any time left over afterward.

Remove Distractions

With such a short window to clean, every minute is precious, and you don’t have time to deal with the unexpected. So before diving into the hour-long clean, eliminate any potential distractions. This could mean shutting your phone off, asking your spouse to run an errand, or telling your children to head to the park and play there for a bit. Once you’ve got the house all to yourself, set a timer for 60 minutes and get to work.

Tackle Clutter First

Before scrubbing away on your hands and knees, go room by room and eliminate any obvious clutter. Place dirty laundry in the hamper, put your dog’s toys away, remove anything from your bathroom countertop, and so on. This quick scan of the entire home should only take a few minutes and clears the way for scrubbing and dusting.

6 Grocery Habits Costing You More Than You Think

Pretreat Where Necessary

Certain cleaning products require time to work, such as placing bleach in the toilet or treating dirty grout with hydrogen peroxide. If you know anything needs time to settle, then go ahead and tackle this step next so that you’re not rushing at the very end.

Tackle the Tough Jobs First

Bathrooms and kitchens are generally the messiest places in the home and require extra care when cleaning. While this may eat away at a good chunk of the hour, it’s important to focus on these rooms rather than let them get worse. Cleaning the bathroom may take up to 30 minutes this time, but hopefully, that number will decrease each week as you grow more comfortable with speed cleaning.

Keep Going!

It may be tempting to rest, but remember that the timer is rapidly counting down to zero. That’s why keeping going at a sprinter’s pace for the whole hour is important, knowing you’ll have time to breathe when the 60 minutes are up. If you sit down for five minutes while the timer is going, you’re doing yourself a disservice and preventing your house from being as clean as possible.

Image Credit: Lukas ter Poorten/ Unsplash

Dust, Then Vacuum

No matter which room of the house you’re in, always dust from top to bottom. If you go from bottom to top, the dust may fall onto areas you’ve just cleaned. Once you’ve completely dusted every area of the room, use a vacuum to clean up any that may have fallen onto the floor.

Adjust Each Week

As speed cleaning becomes a more regular part of your routine, you’ll learn what works and what doesn’t. Keep a journal of what you’d like to do differently going forward and incorporate that approach into your clean the following week. The more time passes, the more you’ll settle into a perfect routine.

7 Surprising Ways To Make Your House Smell Better

Your home is meant to be your sanctuary, but it’s hard to feel relaxed when it stinks like a dirty locker room or zoo full of animals. While basic cleaning supplies help keep those odors at bay, they also leave an artificial smell that can be even worse. Rather than settle for these unpleasant odors, plenty of clever household hacks can improve the smell of any home in a major way. Even better, these methods all utilize non-toxic ingredients that are probably already lying around. Here are seven surprising ways to make your house smell better than ever.

Credit: Daiga Ellaby/ Unsplash+

Coat Light Bulbs With Vanilla Extract

Place a single drop of vanilla extract on any lightbulb in your home. When you turn the lights on later, the bulb’s heat will activate the smell, much like the heat of an oven makes the entire house smell like delicious cookies. If you’d prefer, you can use almond extract, maple extract, or any other flavor. In any event, your entire house will smell like a bakery in no time.

Place Essential Oils Inside the Air Conditioner

Begin by removing the old filter from your air conditioner and buying a new one. Before installing the filter, place 20 drops of your favorite essential oil all over the filter, whether you prefer peppermint, eucalyptus, or any other scent. Then, install the filter and boot up your HVAC system. The pleasant odors will permeate throughout the home.

Mop Tile Floors With Shaving Cream

Bathroom floors can soak up some pretty repulsive odors, leaving us no choice but to clean them with ammonia and other harsh chemicals. But before you resort to those chemical cleaners, try using foam shaving cream. Put on a disposable glove, coat your hand in foam shaving cream, and cover the tile in foam — be sure to get into the grout as well. After 20 minutes, wipe away the shaving cream using a clean rag. This should neutralize those persistent odors, leaving your bathroom smelling fresh.

Clean Kitchen Appliances With Lemon

Fresh lemon juice can make your kitchen appliances smell better in many ways. One method is to squeeze lemon juice into a bowl, soak up the juice using cotton balls, and place the balls inside the fridge, dishwasher, and any other musty appliance. After a few hours, the lemon-soaked balls should absorb those unpleasant odors and leave your appliances smelling better. You can also freshen up the microwave using lemon; mix one cup of water with three tablespoons of lemon juice in a microwave-safe bowl and run it in the microwave for five minutes. Your microwave should smell a lot fresher afterward.

Simmer Citrus on the Stovetop

Place a small pot filled halfway with water on the stovetop and turn the heat on low. Then add several slices of lemon, orange, grapefruit, or other pungent citrus. Depending on personal preference, you can also throw in herbs like mint and rosemary. Let the concoction simmer on the stovetop for as long as you’d like, producing a delightful citrusy smell that fills the entire home.

Put Tea Bags Inside Closets and Drawers

Put your favorite tea bag or loose leaves in a cup and place it inside a musty drawer or closet. The fragrant scent of the tea should help cover any unpleasant odors. You can also leave random tea bags around the house in bowls and cups to bring a little bit of their delightful fragrance into any room.

Line the Garbage Bin With Oil-Soaked Cotton Balls

There’s nothing worse than the smell of hot garbage flooding through the kitchen into the rest of your home. To cut down on those awful garbage smells, take a few cotton balls, soak them in your favorite essential oil or some lemon juice, and throw them into the bin. Feel free to add more cotton balls as you fill the garbage. This should keep the smell at bay until you’re ready to throw out the trash.
