You Probably Shouldn’t Cook Without an Air Purifier Nearby. Here’s Why

For all the attention we give to outdoor air quality, the air inside our homes is rarely as clean as we assume — especially in our kitchens. According to the American Lung Association, indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air, and, in some extreme cases, 100 times more polluted. The pollution isn’t just from the usual culprits, like cigarette smoke, an errant toaster, or lingering wildfire smoke that’s crept its way inside.

When you cook, if the air becomes fragrant without whatever it is you’re boiling, searing, braising, or frying, you’re breathing in particulate matter. And the type of appliance you cook with can make matters worse. Combustion stoves (gas) release far more harmful particles into the air than electric ones, and poorly ventilated gas stoves are among the largest sources of indoor particulate pollution. Even electric stoves aren’t impact-free, so proper ventilation is critical no matter what you use.

In my case, though, my gas stove came without a hood, and my best bet for ventilating my kitchen while I cook is opening a window. That’s why I make sure to also run my air purifier near my stove whenever I cook. That said, it’s important to note that it does not replace proper ventilation and cannot capture all combustion gases, like NO₂, unless specifically designed to do so. According to the EPA, “Most [air purifier] filters are designed to filter either particles or gases. So in order to filter both particles and gases, many air cleaners contain two filters, one for particles and another for gases (in some cases, including gases that have odors). Other air cleaners only have one filter, usually for particles.”

Air purifiers with a single filter help reduce airborne particles (such as oil mist) and eliminate odors (like that stubborn bacon smell). This is the most basic type of air purifier. That said, air purifiers with two filters — one to catch particles and another for gases — aren’t as hard to find as you’d think. The EPA specifies that “to filter gases, choose a portable air cleaner with an activated carbon filter or other filter designed to remove gases.”

Levoit Core Mini-P Air Purifier

BUY FOR $42 (ORIG. $50) AT AMAZON

This option from Levoit, called the Core Mini-P, is quiet and compact (less than a foot tall and only 2.2 lbs) — perfect for even the smallest kitchen. (According to The Spruce, the average kitchen ranges from 161 to 169 square feet, and this machine manages up to 225 square feet.) But it also meets the EPA’s aforementioned requirements; its air filter features three layers of filtration: inner and outer prefilters to trap dust, hair, and pet fur, an efficient inner filter for smoke particles, pollen, and pet dander, and a custom activated carbon filter to neutralize smoke, odors, fumes, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds, aka gases).

Levoit Core Mini-P Replacement Filter

BUY FOR $22 (ORIG. $25) AT AMAZON

It’s important to note, though, that because kitchens produce a lot of grease and smoke, filters typically have a shorter lifespan in this room. You can extend it by keeping the purifier six to 10 feet from cooking surfaces, though. When it does eventually get too clogged to keep doing its job, Levoit offers replacement filters for all its models, and the Core Mini-P filter is far cheaper than the others, despite meeting the EPA’s standard — and available on Amazon for quick shipping if you notice your machine struggling to keep up.

These Pizza Ovens Made the Best Homemade Pies

Outdoor pizza ovens have become an increasingly popular addition to backyard entertainment in recent years, and it’s easy to see why. Pizza ovens offer a combination of convenience, flexibility, flavor, and undeniable showmanship that’s hard to replicate with traditional cooking methods. Choosing the right oven for your setup, however, can be a daunting decision with many factors at play. With varying options to consider such as size, material, fuel type, and price point, it’s important to assess your needs and priorities when hunting down a pizza oven that complements your entertaining style and cooking preferences.

I tested out some of the market’s top-rated outdoor pizza ovens, from affordable and basic to high-end models with advanced features. Read more to find out how these pizzeria-style ovens can take your family pizza nights and patio get-togethers to the next level, and discover which model best fits your experience level, needs, and budget.

Prices are accurate as of May 13, 2026. Subject to change.

Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Pizza Oven

BUY FOR $280 AT AMAZON

I hadn’t heard too much buzz about Ninja’s pizza oven while researching baseline, frills-free options, but it surprised me in the best way possible. After using it for a few pizza nights, I can say the performance is perfect for those who are new to making homemade pizzas and aren’t necessarily vaunted pros just yet.

The electric oven heats up to a temperature of your choice in around 25 minutes and makes cooking your 12-inch, signature-style pizzas easy to conquer from the start. To work the oven, turn the dial to pizza and choose between the different style settings, including Neapolitan, thin, New York, pan, frozen, or custom. These selections come with pre-set but adjustable times that remove any potential confusion that comes along with the more advanced oven models.

I tested the Ninja with an easy homemade pepperoni pizza, as well as a pre-made frozen pizza. I was surprised by just how quickly and efficiently it cooked them without any hiccups, inconsistencies, or confusion. The best part? You don’t have to babysit it; there’s no need to turn the pizza or monitor the heat along the way.

The pizza crust gets that signature, chef’s kiss brick-oven char, decadent crunch, and bubbly cheese. I wouldn’t say the results are going to rival some of the other expensive ovens featured on this list, but for a more affordable, beginner-friendly option, the delicious results are worth the price. Perhaps one of the main pros of this oven is that even at a lower price point than the competition, it’s not a one-trick pony you only pull out on pizza nights. Add flavored wood pellets if you want to experiment with smoked meats or roasts, or use it to bake, broil, or dehydrate. This is a reasonable oven to consider, especially if you don’t plan on making pizzas religiously.

Solo Stove Pi Prime Pizza Oven

BUY FOR $400 AT AMAZON

Like the Ninja, the Solo Stove Pi Prime Pizza Oven is a great option for novice-to-advanced home chefs who want to cook pizzeria-style pies. I first discovered the Solo Stove brand through their top-performing fire pits, so I was curious what experience the Pi Prime Pizza Oven had in store for my 12-inch creations.

This durable, 30-pound oven heats up to a max of around 950 degrees Fahrenheit and uses propane to cook. While I was unsure how well I would be able to operate it at first glance, the set-up and execution experience is almost as seamless as the Ninja with a few extra bells and whistles to boot.

The oven takes around 20 minutes to properly heat up, and I recommend you allow ample time to let it preheat. I tried to cut it short once and noticed my pizza was much less crispy and crunchy. The heat/flame is controlled by an adjustable knob on the front, so you’re able to set your exact preference, whether that’s for whipping up puffy calzones or thin-crust personal pies.

As you get familiar with the oven, you’ll discover minor adjustments that can be made to suit your personal preferences, and it’s not a huge hurdle to conquer. For example, I had to learn how to gauge exactly how long my pizza needed to cook depending on its thickness, so nailing down cooking time with this oven really does make all the difference. This Solo Stove pizza oven doesn’t include an internal temperature gauge you can read, so I used an infrared thermometer so I could know exactly how hot it was at various stages. Not having the temperature displayed right on the oven wasn’t a dealbreaker for me, however, you might find the lack of guidance something you’ll have to get used to.

I didn’t think turning the pizza would make much of a difference, so on my first try I left the Pi Stainless Turner unused.  But the difference is indeed quite noticeable in presentation, texture, and flavor if you make the effort to do some maneuvering while the pizza is fired up. It took some work over a couple of tries, but once you master turning the pie you’ll be a pizza pro. The Margherita and New York-style pizzas I tried were cooked to perfection, with well-balanced flavors and a slightly charred finish that was a hit among the crowd.

Solo Stove’s oven features a panoramic opening that makes it easy to keep an eye on your pizza and make adjustments as needed during the cooking process. And it’s honestly gratifying to watch your meal transform from dough, cheese, and toppings into savory pies ready to devour.

I suspect this oven might be the best bang for your buck for those who want to entertain a crowd with confidence and style while still getting the best-you’ve-had pizzas on a consistent basis. I do recommend using an infrared thermometer, and if you can, consider getting Solo Stove’s Essential Bundle for $450. It includes the oven and experience-enhancing accessories, like a pizza stone, turner, and a rocker pizza cutter. But if you want to test the waters first, the oven itself is a great place to start.

Ooni Volt 12 Electric Pizza Oven

BUY FOR $699 AT AMAZON

Not everyone has access to the outdoor setup that is required of most pizza ovens, and sometimes the weather simply doesn’t allow for outdoor cooking. For those times, consider the indoor-and-outdoor-capable Ooni Volt 12.

This versatile pizza oven is a stand-out from Ooni’s other well-reviewed outdoor-only ovens because it’s electric. I was a bit intimidated by the $900 price tag, but the price is a reflection of its astute versatility, ease of use, and consistent and considerable gourmet results.

The oven itself is surprisingly compact for all its capabilities and fits right on my countertop without having to move too much around. It comes with a 13-inch, easy-to-clean pizza stone and features adjustable knobs — one for timing, one for temperature, and a “boost” mode for transferring heat between the top and bottom heating elements for cooking multiple pizzas at a time. I really liked the triple-paned, drop-down glass door and internal light that makes it simple to keep an eye on what’s cooking, whether that’s New York, Chicago-style, or other savory pies.

The Ooni Volt 12 debuted a few years ago, but it’s still a stand-out favorite among competing brands. For one, the electric oven reaches 850 degrees Fahrenheit, an astounding temp capability compared to most electric pizza ovens. The Ninja oven mentioned above only reaches 700 degrees Fahrenheit, and those extra degrees are needed if you prefer pizzas that require a higher temp.

I powered the oven up both indoors and outdoors with a 20-minute pre-heat, and each time was a seamless, sensory-filled experience. For my test, I went with a basil and mozzarella-loaded pizza as well as a more adventurous fig with caramelized onion, and was blown away by how thoroughly each pizza was finished in less than two minutes with minimal effort on my end.

The transfer into and out of the oven was a breeze. With three kids hovering around me I was worried about them standing too close to heat, but found that the oven’s shell barely even felt hot during use — a testament to its superior insulation.

While I can equate some of the pillowy, cheesy perfection to my culinary knowledge, I have to credit Ooni for how well the combination of flavors and textures came together. It’s an appliance I’d be confident using for family pizza nights and patio get-togethers on the regular.

Perhaps the most worthwhile appeal of the Ooni Volt 12 is its sincere, borderline ridiculous, ease of use for the top-notch results you achieve. Whereas a lot of outdoor pizza ovens require a ton of babysitting with temperature control, fire, and clean up, the Ooni Volt 12 comes with intuitive controls and capabilities that take the stress out of cooking and let the oven do the heavy lifting.

While I wouldn’t say this is the most beginner-friendly piece on this list, it’s the one that delivers some of the best results with a minimal and manageable learning curve.

Gozney Arc XL Pizza Oven

BUY FOR $900 AT GOZNEY

Sometimes a 12-inch pizza doesn’t cut it, which is why we wanted to include an oven that could handle larger pies with ease. The Arc XL cooks up to a 16-inch pizza that’ll satisfy hungry crowds.

When it comes to gourmet pizza at home, the most performance-driven brand at the moment seems to be Gozney. This chef-loved brand offers a range of ovens from basic to super-advanced. I would describe the best-selling Arc XL as a novice-friendly oven that pizza pros will also love.

The propane-powered oven brings all the best details into one cohesive package, including precise temperature control, a spacious cooking area, and a sleek, dome-shaped presentation that’s a stand-out in any outdoor entertainment space. It weighs nearly 60 pounds and is about 21 inches wide, so it won’t hog much space in your backyard. For this oven, you can customize your whole setup or keep it simple with just the oven itself. I opted to test the oven with the Arc XL Stand, which features incredibly useful side tables, and accessories like the Balance Placement Peel and Balance Turning Peel. If it’s in your budget, I recommend these accessories as they do help move things along much more smoothly and successfully.

Firing up the Gozney Arc XL was a cinch. True to its name, the arced, rolling flame at the top of the chamber is visually stunning, but also a brilliant way to distribute heat evenly throughout the cooking process with the fire at the top and the pizza stone at the bottom. The digital temperature display is probably my favorite feature, so you’re able to match up the temp with the style of pizza you’re making and know exactly when it’s time to slide your pie onto the cooking stone.

A common complaint with higher-temp pizza ovens is often poor heat retention. While an oven might claim to be capable of reaching 900-degree temps, if you pull out an infrared thermometer you might find that it’s actually much lower. What impressed me with the Gozney Arc XL is how well it retained its temperature. It stayed nearly identical to what’s displayed on the oven, give or take a few degrees.

I let the Gozney heat up for about 30 minutes before experimenting with different styles of pizza, including a family-favorite Neapolitan, as well as a Detroit-style pizza I was testing out for the first time. I cooked them at different temperatures — 500 degrees Fahrenheit for the Detroit pizza and around 850 degrees Fahrenheit for the Neapolitan — and the results each time were some of the best I’ve ever had with homemade slices. The Neapolitan pizza was cooked with a slightly charred crust and a flavorful center topped with sweet tomatoes and creamy mozzarella cheese. The Detroit-style pizza was also a delight, with a crispy, golden-brown crust, and melty cheese topped with savory Italian sausage.

The combination of flavors and textures was top-notch, and it’s clear that this pizza oven is capable of producing exceptional results, regardless of pizza style, toppings, or one’s personal pizza prowess. The Gozney Arc XL’s ability to turn the heat up quickly also made it a breeze when cooking multiple different pizzas at a time.

The Gozney Arc XL has a commercial-oven aesthetic in an at-home product, but it’s still pricey. I recommend this oven for someone who wants to make bigger pizzas on the regular and turn it into a centerpiece for outdoor entertainment where you’re guaranteed to show off its delicious output.

There’s nothing worse than reaching for a head of lettuce or a package of berries you bought just a few days prior, only to find it’s already gone bad. Using produce before it’s past its prime often feels like a losing game. The good news? Plenty of products on the market help extend the shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables, giving you more time to enjoy them before they turn rotten. Here are a few top products to help you cut food waste and save money.

Want to cut your food prep time way down? Splurge for a food processor. None of the good ones are cheap, but consider not just the time saved from chopping your produce. You won’t have to wash a cutting board or knives, either. As quickly as you can feed it fruit, vegetables, and even cheese, it’ll dice, slice, shred, and julienne it. By running off the KitchenAid’s powerful motor, you don’t have to worry about it struggling with large volumes of produce for those epic meals.

Slicer and Shredder

Would you be willing to trade away the food processor’s versatility for a dishwasher-safe alternative more specialized for slicing and shredding ingredients into thin strands? This four-piece kit includes three blades: a 3-millimeter slicing blade for cucumbers, carrots, celery, and zucchini; a 4-millimeter medium shredding blade for cheeses and firm vegetables, such as carrots; and a 6-millimeter coarse shredding blade for more robust produce, such as cabbages and potatoes. There’s also a food pusher to keep your fingers safe as you feed this slicer/shredder’s insatiable appetite… and then feed yours.

As much as cooking is a necessity in our day-to-day lives, it can feel like quite a hassle. From planning out recipes, making your way to the grocery store, and potential food waste from leftover ingredients, there’s no doubt a lot of time, money, and energy goes into creating tasty meals. But you can simplify the process with meal kits.

Meal kits take some of the stress out of cooking and planning. Many options offer pre-measured, sometimes already-prepared ingredients, so you aren’t left with excess that will sit in your pantry or fridge until it expires. Some even have no-prep meals that you can cook in the oven or microwave. And best of all, they offer variety in food and recipe inspiration. Whether you’re in a cooking rut and want to try new recipes or are new in the kitchen and want to build up your cooking skills, meal kits are sure to help.

Prices are accurate as of October 17, 2025. Subject to change.

Blue Apron

Blue Apron is a fan-favorite option that has both meal kits and prepared meals. It provides dozens of offerings each week across categories like chef favorites, nutritionist-approved, family-friendly, fast and easy, and meat-free. The recipes feel gourmet and are innovative and flavorful, but best of all, they’re easy to create. Preparation and cook time varies between meal kit recipes, however, you can find options that can take between 15 minutes up to almost an hour. When it comes to the prepared meals, they can be ready to serve in just five minutes. There’s also a great selection of add-ons including a la carte protein like shrimp, sides, and desserts. Choose between two and four servings and two to five meals per week for as low as $7.99 per serving.

EveryPlate

EveryPlate is one of the most affordable meal kits on our list with over 27 meals to choose from every week. Its options cover a variety of preferences including vegetarian, family-friendly, calorie-conscious, meat and veggies, and quick and easy. EveryPlate also has additional ingredient add-ons, like extra bacon, cheese, or sauce. Choose between two, four, and six people and three, four, or five meals each week. Whatever combination you choose, you’re only paying $5.99 per serving.

Unlike other meal kits I’ve tried, EveryPlate’s ingredients come in a small cardboard box. It’s such a small detail, but it made me feel like I picked up some produce from a farmer’s market or farm share. Not to mention, the meals were delicious and easy to make. I already have a few in mind that I can’t wait to cook again.

Factor

Factor is a prepared meal delivery service that has over 40 “chef-prepared and dietitian-approved” meals to choose from every week. It features a selection of add-ons for each delivery, giving you options for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and snacks in between. It’s incredibly easy compared to kits that you have to prepare yourself. For most meals, you pop them in the microwave for a few minutes and they’re ready to go.

I was lucky to try it, and if I could get Factor all the time, I would. Each meal was packed with flavor, the protein shakes were filling, and the wellness shots and smoothies were refreshing. The only thing is, Factor isn’t cheap. Each week, you can select as few as six meals at $13.99 each or as many as 36 meals at $11.49 each. As for meal variety, there are a lot of options if you eat meat, a few for pescatarians, and only a handful of vegetarian and vegan picks.

Courtesy of HelloFresh

HelloFresh

HelloFresh offers over 60 meal options every week, and there’s no shortage of variety with preferences including meat and veggies, family-friendly, pescatarian, vegetarian, “fit and wholesome,” and 20-minute meals. Even though there are options that can take as little as 15 minutes to whip up, most meals average around 30 to 45 minutes to prepare and cook. Plans start for as low as two meals and two servings for $11.49 per serving, and go up to six meals and 12 servings at $9.99 per serving.

Out of all the meal kit services, I’ve used HelloFresh the most. I can attest to how easy it is to use and appreciate the flexibility of the service, which allows you to pause or skip deliveries without any fuss when needed. I found the recipes to be beginner-friendly and easy to follow, and that’s coming from someone who wasn’t always the most confident in the kitchen. Even the most novice chefs can tackle them.

Green Chef’s meal kits are made with a healthy lifestyle in mind that include certified organic ingredients. Each week, you can choose from over 40 meals that cater to different diets and preferences, including Mediterranean, keto, protein-packed, calorie-smart, plant-based, quick and easy, gluten-free, and gut and brain health. There are also add-ons available, including canned coffee, egg bites, oats, meat, fish, and more. When selecting your Green Chef meal plan, you can build your plan to cover two, four, or six people, and three or four meals per week, with pricing coming in at $11.99 per serving.

When I tested Green Chef, the quality of the ingredients tasted fresh and the recipes were clear and easy to follow. The recipes I chose took around 30 minutes, but meals can range between 10 minutes to 45 minutes including prep and cook time.

Purple Carrot

If you’re tired of the limited plant-based options at other meal kit services, Purple Carrot is exactly what you need. It offers kits, prepared meals, grocery items, and frozen meals, all catering to plant-based eaters. For meal kits, you can filter through the menu based on preferences for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and less prep time. Breakfast meal kits can take as little as five minutes to make, whereas dinners can take up to 45 minutes. In terms of Purple Carrot’s overall offerings, it knocks it out of the park. When you don’t feel like cooking, you can easily reach for the prepared or frozen meals, and when you’re feeling ambitious, you can always opt for a full meal kit.

Prep and cook time can take anywhere between 15 minutes for express meals to 50 minutes for more advanced recipes.

What sets Home Chef apart from other services is that it can cater to larger households. Rather than limiting boxes to four servings as most meal kit options do, Home Chef has family meal plans with up to six servings, and sometimes more. Healthy eating is a journey, not a destination, and it all starts in your kitchen. We would love to believe that we can outsource our healthy eating habits to restaurants and delivery services, but the truth is that cooking healthy meals at home is essential to developing sustainable, long-term habits. Not only do you have control of the ingredients and nutritional content, but it also helps save money, reduce food waste, and develop your confidence as a vaunted home chef. The tools at your disposal can make or break your ability to cook healthy meals with ease and efficiency. These are some of the items you need in your kitchen to up your culinary game and put a healthy spin on your everyday menu choices.

Souper Cubes

It happens like clockwork every year. You begin with the best intentions to eat healthier, but after days of reheated leftovers, cravings for takeout inevitably take over. It’s a familiar dilemma, but there’s a simple solution. Our eating habits totally transformed when we discovered a game-changing meal prep solution called Souper Cubes, which portions out leftovers, saves money, freezer space, and food waste, and switches up your menu so you don’t grow tired of repeating homemade healthy meals. Whether you want to portion out homemade soups, lightened-up sauces, lean meats, or hearty grains and sides, these stackable, bright blue freezer trays, which come in multiple portion sizes, are the healthy cooking and freezer-space solution we wish we had years ago. With these nifty trays, we’ve been able to freeze homemade broth, pasta, and other filling, nutritious meals that leave boredom and blandness off the menu.

Breville Joule Turbo Sous Vide

The best way to cook healthy is to expand your culinary knowledge and dare to be bold with your menu choices. After all, when you’re confident about whipping up nutritious meals, you’re more likely to stick with healthier habits and give Uber Eats a rest. One adventurous cooking method we’ve taken up recently is sous vide, which cooks food in a water bath at a consistent, lower temperature for longer periods of time so you’re left with tender, succulent meals, especially proteins, that not only taste better but also retain more nutrients than traditional cooking methods. Of all the sous vide machines we’ve tried, none come close to the performance, speed, and ease of use of the Breville Joule Turbo. It cooks fantastic cuts of fish, chicken, beef, and pork that have us reaching for it numerous times a week. The Autopilot feature, which takes the guesswork out of doneness, has become our go-to cooking method. Though we rely on this tool for protein preparation, sous vide can also cook veggies, desserts, and other delicious fare.

OXO Dressing Mixer

Store-bought condiments like bottled salad dressings can be hidden sources of added sugars and artificial ingredients, undermining the nutritional value of an otherwise healthy salad. To elevate your salad game and support your health goals in 2025, we recommend investing in a vessel that can mix and store your own flavorful and nutritious scratch-made dressings. Dressing containers are nothing new, but what makes this piece from OXO our favorite is its generous size and versatility. The wide-mouth opening makes it easy to squeeze lemon juice, pour oils and vinegars, and drop in minced garlic and scallions, while the interior mixing blade helps keep everything well-distributed so you can mix, stir, and pour without issue. The container’s leak-proof and air-tight storage also outperforms any other vessels we’ve used in the past, preventing oily messes and keeping the dressing fresh from the first pour to the last. Your greens will never taste better.

Our Place Perfect Pot

If we had to choose just one cookware brand to obsess over, it would be Our Place. Not only are the brand’s pots and pans versatile and easy to clean, but they double as decorative pieces in glorious shades like lavender and sage. This colorful cookware is our go-to when we want to make healthier weeknight meals, from veggie-packed stir-fry, teriyaki salmon, and creamy black bean soup. We’ve long been obsessed with the Always Pan, but it’s the Perfect Pot that we lean on most when we need to make healthy meals in a flash. Part of healthy cooking is having the go-to, multi-purpose tools that make cooking simple, approachable, and quick, which is why we can’t help but recommend the Perfect Pot for its ability to roast, boil, bake, braise, steam, and fry, among other uses.

Ninja Food Processor

When you commit to healthier eating, you’ll likely utilize a food processor far more than you ever expected. This powerful appliance comes in use to make things like spreads, dressings, and soups, so you can make your own provisions instead of eating sugar-filled peanut butter, store-bought hummus, sodium-laden canned soup, or bottled pesto. Though there are countless food processor brands to choose from at every price point, we’re particularly fond of this Ninja food processor, which also doubles as a blender for those green morning smoothies. Simple and easy to operate, it takes the guesswork out of food preparation so you can focus on making fresh, health-centric foods that support those worthwhile resolutions.

It’s not technically a cooking method, but there’s no way around it, drinking plenty of water is key if you want to embrace a healthier lifestyle overall. There are days when we dread sipping the bland beverage, which is why we made a resolution to start incorporating some flavor. Forgoing sugary flavor packets, we’ve instead opted to infuse our water with lemon, cucumber, strawberry, kiwi, and other natural flavors with the help of this pitcher. Toss the ingredients into the removable rod and drop it in, letting the infusion work its magic. Not only does it help us stay hydrated, but it’s also a huge hit when it comes to entertaining.

Why Your Pots Always Bubble Over (And How to Stop It)

Pot boiling over
Better Report

Let’s set the scene: You’re enjoying a glass of wine while making a nice pasta dinner. You’re listening to your favorite music, and your ingredients are prepped and ready to go. All is going according to plan until the inevitable happens. You hear the telltale sizzle of water overflowing on the stove. You quickly run over to turn it down, losing your boil and creating a mess on the stovetop. You let out a big sigh and begrudgingly continue cooking. Although one bubbled-over pot isn’t the end of the world, it is annoying and can ruin a meal. Here’s why pots boil over and some tricks to stop it.

Why Water Boils Over

There’s no escaping bubbles when you boil water. They’re formed by the extreme heat, which pushes air out of the water. If the temperature is too hot, these already unstable bubbles are pushed further to the top and can overflow if water levels are too high — a sort of stovetop bubble volcano. What’s worse, starchy foods like pasta create a film in the water that makes bubbles more resistant to popping, which is why pasta water is one of the most likely culprits for spillover. Fortunately, there are a few easy ways to reduce or prevent this, even for pasta lovers!

The Controversial Wooden Spoon Hack

You might’ve heard that placing a spoon across the rim of your pot will stop water from boiling over. Some people swear by it, while others feel underwhelmed. In truth, the results vary, but it usually works for at least a few seconds. As the spoon momentarily delays the bubbles from rising, you’ll have enough time to get to the stove to turn down the heat on the burner.A plain old wooden mixing spoon (or heat-proof spoon, such as silicone) is all you need for this trick. Choose one that is longer than the diameter of your pot and lay it across the top before you begin to boil it. The spoon should repel bubbles that dare to spill over the edge. It works because the bubbles in boiling water are unstable, and the spoon destabilizes them even more and pops them. The spoon is also cooler than the water, so the steam and bubbles condense into water as it reaches the spoon.

A ‘Butter’ Option

Next time you’re ready to boil water, reach for the butter. Rubbing some butter along the rim of your pot or adding some to the water before you turn on the burner should deter water from boiling over. This trick works because oil and water don’t mix, and butter contains up to 20% oil. It creates a barrier around the rim to prevent spillage, disrupting the foaming process. When added directly to the water, it results in a less aggressive boil by disturbing the bubbles. You can use other cooking oils, but beware — rubbing vegetable oil around the rim of your pot can get messy. Adding a teaspoon or so directly to the water is probably easier.

There is one exception when you should use this trick with caution. When cooking pasta, rub the butter around the rim instead of adding it directly to the pasta water. The butter can make noodles very oily, and the sauce will slide right off.

Feeling Salty?

Other options exist if extra butter or oil doesn’t suit your needs. When making pasta, you can add a teaspoon or so of salt to the water before turning on the burner. This subdues the starch-fueled foam that pasta commonly causes. Salt not only keeps bubbles at bay but can also add flavor to the pasta. This trick can be used to boil anything because it helps maintain a more even, lower-temperature boil. Remember: Don’t add too much extra salt to your recipes, especially if you’re making soup or something with broth, because the salt will over-flavor the liquid.

Invest in a Silicone Cover

If none of these at-home remedies do the trick, consider investing in a silicone spill stopper for your pot. The stopper ventilates the boiling pot to allow steam out and prevent bubbles from escaping. Just be sure to measure the diameter of your pot before ordering to ensure a snug fit. Look for a heat-resistant, food-grade material, such as BPA-free and non-toxic silicone.

If it seems like microplastics are everywhere nowadays…it’s because they are. From untouched Polar regions to our kitchens, and even our bodies, microplastics are cropping up all over the place. Scientists estimate that a significant portion of our microplastic exposure comes from food intake, leaked from common kitchen items like ice trays, dishwasher pods, food storage containers, cutting boards, and more. One recent study aimed to discover the level of microplastics that cutting boards emit. After all, these plastic boards do bear the brunt of daily chopping. Here’s what the research indicates and why some people are passing on the plastic.

What Are Microplastics?

Microplastics are defined as any tiny piece of plastic less than five millimeters in diameter, about the size of a pencil eraser. However, microplastics (as the name suggests) can be much smaller and invisible to the naked eye. This is especially hazardous because they can take hundreds to thousands of years to break down.

Microplastics are detected in many things people consume daily, including seafood, drinking water, beer, and even table salt. In the case of cutting boards, microplastics come straight from the source. As we cut up food, the knife blade gouges the plastic surface of the board and can redistribute plastic into the food. Hundreds of knife marks on boards show evidence of this plastic removal process. Because of this, researchers decided to test how much plastic is transferred from the board to food.

What Does the Research Say?

A 2023 study published in the American Chemical Society’s Environmental Science & Technology journal tested annual exposure to microplastics when cutting on plastic boards. The study measured the amount of microplastics released into food as it’s chopped up. This study tested two of the most common types of plastic boards: polypropylene and polyethylene.

It was discovered that a person using a polyethylene board was exposed to anywhere from 7.4 to 50.7 grams of microplastics annually. The findings for polypropylene boards were similar, with an annual exposure of 49.5 grams of microplastics. On the boards that leached the most plastic, up to 1,114 microplastic particles were released with every cut. To put this into perspective, compare these numbers with the average credit card. Plastic credit cards weigh around five grams, meaning we could be ingesting the equivalent of 10 plastic credit cards per year from using these chopping boards.

What Are the Risks of Microplastics?

Ingesting the equivalent of a deck of credit cards doesn’t sound too healthy, but just how bad is it? Unfortunately, scientists are unsure of the health impacts of microplastic consumption. Even so, the perceived danger and unknown risks are enough to have doctors warning us to limit our exposure. Medical professionals, scientists, and even the United Nations support measures to reduce this hazard for environmental and health reasons.

Scientists do know that once microplastics are ingested, they’re nearly impossible to get rid of, and they’ve been found all over the human body, in tissues and organs. The impacts of this phenomenon vary depending on the type, size, shape, and concentration of microplastics. Some microplastics can physically block the digestive system, causing injury. More research is needed to discover the other health hazards.

Should You Get Rid of Plastic Cutting Boards?

It might not be the answer you want to hear, but humans are exposed to countless other sources of microplastics in our homes, workplaces, and outdoor environments. Throwing away one or two plastic cutting boards is probably not enough to significantly mitigate your risk.

However, it might be a great step when combined with other measures — like swapping your plastic Tupperware for glass containers — that can help address your health and food safety. In this case, swapping out plastic for a wooden, bamboo, glass, or stone board might bring you peace of mind. After all, every small step is progress toward bettering our health and safeguarding our environment.
